Molecular Lines of 13 Galactic Infrared Bubble Regions
We investigated the physical properties of molecular clouds and star
formation processes around infrared bubbles which are essentially expanding HII
regions. We performed observations of 13 galactic infrared bubble fields
containing 18 bubbles. Five molecular lines, 12CO (J=1-0), 13CO (J=1-0),
C18O(J=1-0), HCN (J=1-0), and HCO+ (J=1-0), were observed, and several publicly
available surveys, GLIMPSE, MIPSGAL, ATLASGAL, BGPS, VGPS, MAGPIS, and NVSS,
were used for comparison. We find that these bubbles are generally connected
with molecular clouds, most of which are giant. Several bubble regions display
velocity gradients and broad shifted profiles, which could be due to the
expansion of bubbles. The masses of molecular clouds within bubbles range from
100 to 19,000 solar mass, and their dynamic ages are about 0.3-3.7 Myr, which
takes into account the internal turbulence pressure of surrounding molecular
clouds. Clumps are found in the vicinity of all 18 bubbles, and molecular
clouds near four of these bubbles with larger angular sizes show shell-like
morphologies, indicating that either collect-and-collapse or radiation-driven
implosion processes may have occurred. Due to the contamination of adjacent
molecular clouds, only six bubble regions are appropriate to search for
outflows, and we find that four of them have outflow activities. Three bubbles
display ultra-compact HII regions at their borders, and one of them is probably
responsible for its outflow. In total, only six bubbles show star formation
activities in the vicinity, and we suggest that star formation processes might
have been triggered.Comment: 55 Pages, 32 figures. Accepted for publication in A
Formation of Nanofoam carbon and re-emergence of Superconductivity in compressed CaC6
Pressure can tune material's electronic properties and control its quantum
state, making some systems present disconnected superconducting region as
observed in iron chalcogenides and heavy fermion CeCu2Si2. For CaC6
superconductor (Tc of 11.5 K), applying pressure first Tc increases and then
suppresses and the superconductivity of this compound is eventually disappeared
at about 18 GPa. Here, we report a theoretical finding of the re-emergence of
superconductivity in heavily compressed CaC6. The predicted phase III (space
group Pmmn) with formation of carbon nanofoam is found to be stable at wide
pressure range with a Tc up to 14.7 K at 78 GPa. Diamond-like carbon structure
is adhered to the phase IV (Cmcm) for compressed CaC6 after 126 GPa, which has
bad metallic behavior, indicating again departure from superconductivity.
Re-emerged superconductivity in compressed CaC6 paves a new way to design
new-type superconductor by inserting metal into nanoporous host lattice.Comment: 31 pages, 12 figures, and 4 table
Bis(2-benzylÂiminoÂmethyl-4,6-dihydroÂselenoÂphenolato)iron(II)
In the title compound, [Fe(C14H12NOSe2)2], the FeII ion (site symmetry ) is four-coordinated by two N,O-bidentate Schiff base ligands, resulting in a slightly distorted trans-FeN2O2 square-planar coordination for the metal ion
Electro-acupuncture promotes survival, differentiation of the bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells as well as functional recovery in the spinal cord-transected rats

Abstract

Background

Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are one of the potential tools for treatment of the spinal cord injury; however, the survival and differentiation of MSCs in an injured spinal cord still need to be improved. In the present study, we investigated whether <it>Governor Vessel </it>electro-acupuncture (EA) could efficiently promote bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) survival and differentiation, axonal regeneration and finally, functional recovery in the transected spinal cord.

Results

The spinal cords of adult Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were completely transected at T10, five experimental groups were performed: 1. sham operated control (Sham-control); 2. operated control (Op-control); 3. electro-acupuncture treatment (EA); 4. MSCs transplantation (MSCs); and 5. MSCs transplantation combined with electro-acupuncture (MSCs+EA). After 2-8 weeks of MSCs transplantation plus EA treatment, we found that the neurotrophin-3 (NT-3), cAMP level, the differentiation of MSCs, the 5-HT positive and CGRP positive nerve fibers in the lesion site and nearby tissue of injured spinal cord were significantly increased in the MSCs+EA group as compared to the group of the MSCs transplantation or the EA treated alone. Furthermore, behavioral test and spinal cord evoked potentials detection demonstrated a significantly functional recovery in the MSCs +EA group.

Conclusion

These results suggest that EA treatment may promote grafted MSCs survival and differentiation; MSCs transplantation combined with EA treatment could promote axonal regeneration and partial locomotor functional recovery in the transected spinal cord in rats and indicate a promising avenue of treatment of spinal cord injury.</p
Expression of hypoxia inducible factor-1α and vascular endothelial growth factor-C in human chronic periodontitis
AbstractBackground/purposeEvidence shows that there is a relationship between hypoxia and inflammatory response in periodontitis. Hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α is a major regulator of energy homeostasis and cellular adaptation to low oxygen stress. Although experimental results demonstrate an association between HIF-1α and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-C in tumor angiogenesis, the role of HIF-1α and VEGF-C in the pathogenesis of periodontitis is still ambiguous. So far, limited attention has been given to the role of hypoxia and VEGF-C in periodontitis. The present study aimed to investigate the expression and distribution of HIF-1α and VEGF-C in gingival tissue samples from patients with different stages of chronic periodontitis and healthy individuals.Materials and methodsA total of 56 samples were involved in this study, including moderate chronic periodontitis (n = 20), advanced chronic periodontitis (n = 20), and healthy control tissues (n = 16). The gingival specimens were stained with hematoxylin and eosin for histopathology. The expression of HIF-1α and VEGF-C in gingival tissues was detected by immunohistochemical staining.ResultsHIF-1α and VEGF-C were found in gingival tissues from patients with different stages of chronic periodontitis as well as healthy control tissues. HIF-1α protein was expressed mainly in the epithelial layer of gingival tissues, and VEGF-C protein was mostly located in the connective tissue papilla of gingival tissues. Compared with healthy controls, the expression of HIF-1α and VEGF-C in chronic periodontitis groups was significantly higher (P < 0.01), and the density of HIF-1α and VEGF-C in advanced chronic periodontitis group was even significantly higher than that in the moderate chronic periodontitis group (P < 0.01).ConclusionOur results suggest that the expression of HIF-1α and VEGF-C increased with severity of periodontitis. So, we conclude that HIF-1α may play an important role in the pathophysiology of human periodontitis and may be related to the function of VEGF-C during periodontitis
