    A Study of Modeling Rising Intonation in Cantonese Neural Speech Synthesis

    In human speech, the attitude of a speaker cannot be fully expressed only by the textual content. It has to come along with the intonation. Declarative questions are commonly used in daily Cantonese conversations, and they are usually uttered with rising intonation. Vanilla neural text-to-speech (TTS) systems are not capable of synthesizing rising intonation for these sentences due to the loss of semantic information. Though it has become more common to complement the systems with extra language models, their performance in modeling rising intonation is not well studied. In this paper, we propose to complement the Cantonese TTS model with a BERT-based statement/question classifier. We design different training strategies and compare their performance. We conduct our experiments on a Cantonese corpus named CanTTS. Empirical results show that the separate training approach obtains the best generalization performance and feasibility.Comment: Accepted by INTERSPEECH 202

    A solution processed flexible nanocomposite electrode with efficient light extraction for organic light emitting diodes.

    Highly efficient organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on multiple layers of vapor evaporated small molecules, indium tin oxide transparent electrode, and glass substrate have been extensively investigated and are being commercialized. The light extraction from the exciton radiative decay is limited to less than 30% due to plasmonic quenching on the metallic cathode and the waveguide in the multi-layer sandwich structure. Here we report a flexible nanocomposite electrode comprising single-walled carbon nanotubes and silver nanowires stacked and embedded in the surface of a polymer substrate. Nanoparticles of barium strontium titanate are dispersed within the substrate to enhance light extraction efficiency. Green polymer OLED (PLEDs) fabricated on the nanocomposite electrode exhibit a maximum current efficiency of 118 cd/A at 10,000 cd/m(2) with the calculated external quantum efficiency being 38.9%. The efficiencies of white PLEDs are 46.7 cd/A and 30.5%, respectively. The devices can be bent to 3 mm radius repeatedly without significant loss of electroluminescent performance. The nanocomposite electrode could pave the way to high-efficiency flexible OLEDs with simplified device structure and low fabrication cost

    Thin-film field-effect transistor is a fundamental component behind various mordern electronics. The development of stretchable electronics poses fundamental challenges in developing new electronic materials for stretchable thin-film transistors that are mechanically compliant and solution processable. Here we report the fabrication of transparent thin-film transistors that behave like an elastomer film. The entire fabrication is carried out by solution-based techniques, and the resulting devices exhibit a mobility of ∼30 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1), on/off ratio of 10(3)-10(4), switching current >100 μA, transconductance >50 μS and relative low operating voltages. The devices can be stretched by up to 50% strain and subjected to 500 cycles of repeated stretching to 20% strain without significant loss in electrical property. The thin-film transistors are also used to drive organic light-emitting diodes. The approach and results represent an important progress toward the development of stretchable active-matrix displays

    Two-Terminal manipulation of masses:application to vibration isolation of passive suspensions

    A typical mass has only one genuine terminal, through which the mass interacts a position and a force vector with the environment. This paper proposes an innovative twoterminal manipulation approach for typical masses, such as mass blocks and flywheels, so as to upgrade its topology. A prototype device of the two-terminal mass is developed for testing. The experimental result validates its free two-terminal inertial dynamic characteristics. The twoterminal mass is then applied to vibration isolation of the passive suspension. The simulation result shows that, due to the presence of the second genuine terminal, the two-terminal mass contributes the suspension better isolation performance. The presented approach provides masses more extensive applications to vibration system

    Hypolipidemic effect of aqueous leaf extract of carmona microphylla G Don

    Purpose: To investigate the hypolipidemic effects of the aqueous leaf extract of Carmona microphylla (Lam.) G. Don. (CAE) in vitro and in vivo.Methods: The lipid-lowering effect of CAE was investigated in oleic acid (OA)-induced steatosis in HepG2 liver cells, as well as in high-fat diet (HFD)- and triton WR-1339 (TRI)-induced hyperlipidemic mice. The levels of intracellular, serum and/or hepatic total cholesterol (TC); triglyceride (TG); low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-c); high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-c); hepatic superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) were determined by oil-red O staining and appropriate kits.Results: Treatment with CAE inhibited lipid accumulation in HepG2 cells and reduced the elevated levels of serum TC, TG and LDL-c as well as hepatic TC and TG in hyperlipidemic mice induced by HFD. CAE administration also significantly decreased arteriosclerosis index (AI) and LDL-c/HDL-c ratio, but improved oxidative status as revealed by increased hepatic SOD activity and decreased MDA level. The lipid ameliorating and antioxidative effects of CAE (600 mg/kg) were comparable to those of the standard lipid-lowering drug, sivastatin (5 mg/kg).Conclusion: These results suggest that C. microphylla aqueous extract (CAE) protects against hyperlipidemia induced by HFD in mice and may find therapeutic application in hyperlipidemic patients.Keywords: Carmona microphylla, Hyperlipidemia, Atherosclerosis, Oxidative stress, Sivastatin, Lipidlowerin

    Optical flow tracking method for vibration identification of out-of-plane vision

    Vibration measurement based on computer vision has been extensively studied and considered as a wide-range, non-contact measurement method. In this paper, the principle of vibration measurement using out-of-plane vision has been investigated under conventional imaging condition. A measurement model for out-of-plane vision has also been demonstrated. Combined the out-of-plane vision measurement model with the optical flow motion estimation principle, a novel model of optical flow tracking method for vibration detection based on out-of-plane vision has been proposed. It enables the identification of vibration parameters without image feature extraction. Visual vibration detection experiment has been conducted with a cantilever beam and a motor cover. Experimental results have been rigorously compared with finite element simulation to verify the efficacy of the proposed method. It shows that this method can effectively identify vibration parameters of the structure without image feature extraction

    Analysis of the effect of anti-tuberculosis treatment and lung injury in patients with tuberculosis combined with underlying disease

    Objective·To investigate the impact of complications on the prognosis and lung injury of patients with tuberculosis..Methods·A retrospective cohort study was used for analysis, to select a total of 450 smear-positive tuberculosis (TB) patients, 323 males (71.8%) and 127 females (28.2%), from January to December 2018 at Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital, Tongji University School of Medicine, which were divided into non-complication group and complication group (diabetes, hypertension, liver diseases, kidney diseases and gallbladder diseases). Overall treatment outcomes and lung injuries in TB patients with and without complications were analyzed by using χ2 test. Stratified analysis of the impact of each comorbidity on the prognosis and lung injury of TB patients was performed. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to analyze the temporal correlation between complications and tuberculosis prognosis.Results·Four hundred and fifty patients with a median age of 33 years were included, 173 of whom had complications: diabetes in 49 cases, hypertension in 23 cases, liver diseases in 83 cases, kidney diseases in 35 cases, and gallbladder diseases in 17 cases. The cure rate of TB patients without complications was 80.5%, which was significantly higher than that of the group with complications (P<0.05); the significantly lower cure rate of TB patients with diabetes, hypertension and kidney diseases at diagnosis was the key cause of anti-tuberculosis treatment failure; TB patients with diabetes and liver diseases had higher lung bacterial load and larger areas of lung damage, and TB patients with diabetes and kidney diseases had higher incidence of pulmonary cavity.Conclusion·Diabetes, hypertension and kidney diseases exacerbate lung damage and lead to lower TB cure rates. Early interventions by clinicians at the time of diagnosis can improve cure rates, shorten treatment time, and reduce medical costs for TB patients

    Metal-slotted polymer optical waveguide device

    Metal-slotted optical waveguides (MSOWs) using an electro-optic polymer material have been experimentally demonstrated. The device consists of a three-layered slab waveguide in that the thin metal (gold) film strips are embedded on top of the lower cladding. The optical mode shapes and effective index of the propagation modes of the proposed waveguide structure were calculated using a simplified effective index method and a simulation tool. The fabrication and the device characteristics of a variable optical attenuator and an optical phase modulator based on MSOWs are discussed.open5
