    Sexual/Textual Politics in the Women of Ophelia A. Dimalanta’s Poems

    The study attempts to show that while Ophelia A. Dimalanta’s excellent New Critical training and education have rendered her a quintessential poet conscious of form, technique, and craftsmanship, which in turn, has been foregrounded by her equally New Critical-trained colleagues, this New Critical tradition has limited the study of her oeuvre to artistic structure and form, glossing over myriad concerns that the poems may have. The present study, in turn, has recuperated form, technique, and genre to encode the feminism that undergirds her poetic vision.     IN-PLANE CYCLIC SHEAR PERFORMANCE OF PIPE STEM REINFORCED COB WALL

    This thesis investigates full-scale pipe stem reinforced cob walls under in-plane cyclic shear loads. Cob is the combination of clay subsoils, sand, straw and water that is built in lifts to produce monolithic walls. There is insufficient amount of information on cob as a building material in today’s age. The prior research that exists has examined varying straw content and type, water content, and mixture ratios to determine their effect on strength. There is currently one report that analyzes full-scale cob walls under in-plane loading. This thesis looks to iterate the full-scale tests and specifically studies the effect of reinforcement on cob walls. Concurrent to this research, another thesis was written that investigates a full-scale wire mesh reinforced cob wall under in-plane cyclic shear loads. From the data collected, a shear failure was suggested for the stem pipe wall. There appeared to be a large amount of ductility from the data and the cracks formed. Ductility, a seismic response modification factor (R-Factor) and stiffness were calculated using the yield point and ultimate loads.Iterations of this research and those performed in the past can be helpful in integrating cob in to the California Building Code

    Temporal Correlations and Persistence in the Kinetic Ising Model: the Role of Temperature

    We study the statistical properties of the sum St=∫0tdt′σt′S_t=\int_{0}^{t}dt' \sigma_{t'}, that is the difference of time spent positive or negative by the spin σt\sigma_{t}, located at a given site of a DD-dimensional Ising model evolving under Glauber dynamics from a random initial configuration. We investigate the distribution of StS_{t} and the first-passage statistics (persistence) of this quantity. We discuss successively the three regimes of high temperature (T>TcT>T_{c}), criticality (T=TcT=T_c), and low temperature (T<TcT<T_{c}). We discuss in particular the question of the temperature dependence of the persistence exponent θ\theta, as well as that of the spectrum of exponents θ(x)\theta(x), in the low temperature phase. The probability that the temporal mean St/tS_t/t was always larger than the equilibrium magnetization is found to decay as t−θ−12t^{-\theta-\frac12}. This yields a numerical determination of the persistence exponent θ\theta in the whole low temperature phase, in two dimensions, and above the roughening transition, in the low-temperature phase of the three-dimensional Ising model.Comment: 21 pages, 11 PostScript figures included (1 color figure

    Enhanced Inter-Cell Interference Coordination Challenges in Heterogeneous Networks

    3GPP LTE-Advanced has started a new study item to investigate Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) deployments as a cost effective way to deal with the unrelenting traffic demand. HetNets consist of a mix of macrocells, remote radio heads, and low-power nodes such as picocells, femtocells, and relays. Leveraging network topology, increasing the proximity between the access network and the end-users, has the potential to provide the next significant performance leap in wireless networks, improving spatial spectrum reuse and enhancing indoor coverage. Nevertheless, deployment of a large number of small cells overlaying the macrocells is not without new technical challenges. In this article, we present the concept of heterogeneous networks and also describe the major technical challenges associated with such network architecture. We focus in particular on the standardization activities within the 3GPP related to enhanced inter-cell interference coordination.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 2 table
