Macrosegregation in direct-chill casting of aluminium alloys

Copyright @ 2008 Elsevier B.V.Semi-continuous direct-chill (DC) casting holds a prominent position in commercial aluminium alloy processing, especially in production of large sized ingots. Macrosegregation, which is the non-uniform chemical composition over the length scale of a casting, is one of the major defects that occur during this process. The fact that macrosegregation is essentially unaffected by subsequent heat treatment (hence constitutes an irreversible defect) leaves us with little choice but to control it during the casting stage. Despite over a century of research in the phenomenon of macrosegregation in castings and good understanding of underlying mechanisms, the contributions of these mechanisms in the overall macrosegregation picture; and interplay between these mechanisms and the structure formation during solidification are still unclear. This review attempts to fill this gap based on the published data and own results. The following features make this review unique: results of computer simulations are used in order to separate the effects of different macrosegregation mechanisms. The issue of grain refining is specifically discussed in relation to macrosegregation. This report is structured as follows. Macrosegregation as a phenomenon is defined in the Introduction. In âDirect-chill casting â process parameters, solidification and structure patternsâ section, direct-chill casting, the role of process parameters and the evolution of structural features in the as-cast billets are described. In âMacrosegregation in direct-chill casting of aluminium alloysâ section, macrosegregation mechanisms are elucidated in a historical perspective and the correlation with DC casting process parameters and structural features are made. The issue of how to control macrosegregation in direct-chill casting is also dealt with in the same section. In âRole of grain refiningâ section, the effect of grain refining on macrosegregation is introduced, the current understanding is described and the contentious issues are outlined. The review is finished with conclusion remarks and outline for the future research.The Netherlands

Optical properties of in the normal state
We present the optical reflectance and conductivity spectra for non-oxide
antiperovskite superconductor at different temperatures. The
reflectance drops gradually over a large energy scale up to 33,000 cm,
with the presence of several wiggles. The reflectance has slight temperature
dependence at low frequency but becomes temperature independent at high
frequency. The optical conductivity shows a Drude response at low frequencies
and four broad absorption features in the frequency range from 600 to
33,000 . We illustrate that those features can be well understood from
the intra- and interband transitions between different components of Ni 3d
bands which are hybridized with C 2p bands. There is a good agreement between
our experimental data and the first-principle band structure calculations.Comment: 4 pages, to be published in Phys. Rev.
Conduction mechanisms of epitaxial EuTiO3 thin films
To investigate leakage current density versus electric field characteristics,
epitaxial EuTiO3 thin films were deposited on (001) SrTiO3 substrates by pulsed
laser deposition and were post-annealed in a reducing atmosphere. This
investigation found that conduction mechanisms are strongly related to
temperature and voltage polarity. It was determined that from 50 to 150 K the
dominant conduction mechanism was a space-charge-limited current under both
negative and positive biases. From 200 to 300 K, the conduction mechanism shows
Schottky emission and Fowler-Nordheim tunneling behaviors for the negative and
positive biases, respectively. This work demonstrates that Eu3+ is one source

The Behaviour of Finely Ground Bottom Ash in Portland Cement
The aim of this project was to assess the effects of finely ground MSWI bottom ash in Portland cement. Mortar mixes were prepared with 10% and 40% replacement of cement by ground IBA and then tested with regards to their material composition and engineering behaviour. IBA was found not to be inert, but showed some degree of reactivity. Replacement of cement with IBA was found to have no detrimental effects at low concentrations. This was not the case for 40% replacement, where cement replacement greatly affected strength, creep and drying shrinkage
Impulse-induced localized nonlinear modes in an electrical lattice
Intrinsic localized modes, also called discrete breathers, can exist under
certain conditions in one-dimensional nonlinear electrical lattices driven by
external harmonic excitations. In this work, we have studied experimentally the
efectiveness of generic periodic excitations of variable waveform at generating
discrete breathers in such lattices. We have found that this generation
phenomenon is optimally controlled by the impulse transmitted by the external
