The general public still believes in the harmful effect of chemistry. Chemistry is perceived as such a field, which pollutes all aspects of the environment and has an important influence on the health of the inhabitants. All this logically modifies the opinions of students at high schools and at universities and it also affects their interests in this field. This project will not argue about the harmful effects of chemical industry, however, the goal is to focus on its positive aspects and to underline its necessity and the unique character of various chemical products in every day lifes of each of us. Every popular part is completed with a scientific part, which will explain the basic chemical about each particular chapter to the reader.Supplement: the monography Life with chemistry.Available from STL Prague, CZ / NTK - National Technical LibrarySIGLECZCzech Republi

Surface Modification of Water Purification Membranes

    No full text
Polymeric membranes are an energy-efficient means of purifying water, but they suffer from fouling during filtration. Modification of the membrane surface is one route to mitigating membrane fouling, as it helps to maintain high levels of water productivity. Here, a series of common techniques for modification of the membrane surface are reviewed, including surface coating, grafting, and various treatment techniques such as chemical treatment, UV irradiation, and plasma treatment. Historical background on membrane development and surface modification is also provided. Finally, polydopamine, an emerging material that can be easily deposited onto a wide variety of substrates, is discussed within the context of membrane modification. A brief summary of the chemistry of polydopamine, particularly as it may pertain to membrane development, is also described.clos

Subjective status and perceived legitimacy across countries

The relationships between subjective status and perceived legitimacy are important for understanding the extent to which people with low status are complicit in their oppression. We use novel data from 66 samples and 30 countries (N = 12,788) and find that people with higher status see the social system as more legitimate than those with lower status, but there is variation across people and countries. The association between subjective status and perceived legitimacy was never negative at any levels of eight moderator variables, although the positive association was sometimes reduced. Although not always consistent with hypotheses, group identification, self-esteem, and beliefs in social mobility were all associated with perceived legitimacy among people who have low subjective status. These findings enrich our understanding of the relationship between social status and legitimacy
