    Technostress:negative effect on performance and possible mitigations

    We investigate the effect of conditions that create technostress, on technology-enabled innovation, technology-enabled performance and overall performance. We further look at the role of technology self-efficacy, organizational mechanisms that inhibit technostress and technology competence as possible mitigations to the effects of technostress creators. Our findings show a negative association between technostress creators and performance. We find that, while traditional effort-based mechanisms such as building technology competence reduce the impact of technostress creators on technology-enabled innovation and performance, more empowering mechanisms such as developing technology self-efficacy and information systems (IS) literacy enhancement and involvement in IS initiatives are required to counter the decrease in overall performance because of technostress creators. Noting that the professional sales context offers increasingly high expectations for technology-enabled performance in an inherently interpersonal-oriented and relationship-oriented environment with regard to overall performance, and high failure rates for IS acceptance/use, the study uses survey data collected from 237 institutional sales professionals

    Based on representations of the symmetric group SNS_N, explicit and exact Schr\"odinger equation is derived for U=U=\infty Hubbard model in any dimensions with arbitrary number of holes, which clearly shows that during the movement of holes the spin background of electrons plays an important role. Starting from it, at T=0 we have analyzed the behaviour of the system depending on the dimensionality and number of holes. Based on the presented formalism thermodynamic quantities have also been expressed using a loop summation technique in which the partition function is given in terms of characters of SNS_N. In case of the studied finite systems, the loop summation have been taken into account exactly up to the 14-th order in reciprocal temperature and the results were corrected in higher order based on Monte Carlo simulations. The obtained results suggest that the presented formalism increase the efficiency of the Monte Carlo simulations as well, because the spin part contribution of the background is automatically taken into account by the characters of SNS_N.Comment: 26 pages, 1 embedded ps figure; Phil.     Field and chirality effects on electrochemical charge transfer rates: Spin dependent electrochemistry

    This work examines whether electrochemical redox reactions are sensitive to the electron spin orientation by examining the effects of magnetic field and molecular chirality on the charge transfer process. The working electrode is either a ferromagnetic nickel film or a nickel film that is coated with an ultrathin (5\u201330 nm) gold overlayer. The electrode is coated with a self-assembled monolayer that immobilizes a redox couple containing chiral molecular units, either the redox active dye toluidine blue O with a chiral cysteine linking unit or cytochrome c. By varying the direction of magnetization of the nickel, toward or away from the adsorbed layer, we demonstrate that the electrochemical current depends on the orientation of the electrons\u2019 spin. In the case of cytochrome c, the spin selectivity of the reduction is extremely high, namely, the reduction occurs mainly with electrons having their spin-aligned antiparallel to their velocity

    Report to the Chicago Park District on Conflicts with Ring-billed Gulls and the 2015 Integrated Ring-billed Gull Damage Management Project

    The large ring-billed gull (Larus delawarensis) population in the City of Chicago has caused various conflicts including general nuisance, property damage, economic losses, and threats to human health and safety. Several studies have shown a relationship between ring-billed gulls and increased levels of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) in nearshore waters. Results of tests for E. coli have led to the issuance of swim advisories at Chicago beaches. The objectives of the Chicago Ring-billed Gull Damage Management Project were to (1) reduce the local production of ring-billed gulls, (2) reduce the severity of conflicts with gulls including the issuance of swim advisories, and (3) evaluate how limiting the production of gulls affects gull use of Chicago’s beaches. Since the beginning of the Chicago Ring-billed Gull Damage Management Project in 2007, USDA-WS established that oiling eggs with food-grade corn oil was a successful method in reducing gull production. Between 2007 and 2015, 103,828 ring-billed gull nests were rendered inviable. It is estimated that between 83,062 and 197,273 hatch-year ring-billed gulls have been prevented since the initiation of this project. Management of ring-billed gull nests has contributed to a significant reduction in hatch-year gull use of Chicago beaches. Since 2007, hatch-year gull use of beaches has declined by 86%, with eight of the nine analyzed beaches showing a significant reduction. The combined observations of hatch-year and after hatch-year gull use of beaches illustrated a reduction in gulls compared to 2007 observation totals. Conflicts with landowners and land managers have been reduced as a result of our efforts to limit production of young gulls. The connection between ring-billed gulls and water quality is becoming more evident. It has been demonstrated that a relationship exists between gulls and the concentration of E. coli at beaches. During our nine treatment years and the prior (pretreatment) year, the Chicago Park District has routinely sampled for E. coli as a FIB to assess water quality. During the 2015 swim season the proportion of tests resulting in a swim advisory compared to 2006 (baseline year) declined at 12 of 18 beaches tested

    Examining impacts of technostress on the professional salesperson's performance

    This paper explores technostress in the context of the professional sales area. This area is unique in that sales professionalsprefer to spend time with customers in developing interpersonal relationships, rather than on technology related tasks. At thesame time, the modern sales environment requires the use of IS such as sales force automation applications. The sales rolealso offers increased possibility of role stress and very high expectations for technology-enabled performance, making this anideal context to explore how technostress operates through role stress in negatively impacting technology-enabledperformance. It also means that finding ways to mitigate this negative impact is of strategic importance, and a review of thesales technology literature points to self-efficacy as a potential factor to reduce the effects of technostress. Integratingliterature from technostress, sales and social cognitive theory, we explore the relationships between technostress, role stress,technology self-efficacy and technology-enabled performance among business-to-business salespeople. Our findings show apositive association between technostress and role stress, and a negative one between role stress and performance. We findthat technology self-efficacy can counter the decrease in performance and increase in role stress due to technostress.Theoretical and managerial implications of these findings are discussed
