    Langevin equations from experimental data: the case of rotational diffusion in granular media

    A model has two main aims: predicting the behavior of a physical system and understanding its nature, that is how it works, at some desired level of abstraction. A promising recent approach to model building consists in deriving a Langevin-type stochastic equation from a time series of empirical data. Even if the protocol is based upon the introduction of drift and diffusion terms in stochastic differential equations, its implementation involves subtle conceptual problems and, most importantly, requires some prior theoretical knowledge about the system. Here we apply this approach to the data obtained in a rotational granular diffusion experiment, showing the power of this method and the theoretical issues behind its limits. A crucial point emerged in the dense liquid regime, where the data reveal a complex multiscale scenario with at least one fast and one slow variable. Identifying the latter is a major problem within the Langevin derivation procedure and led us to introduce innovative ideas for its solution

    What Do Ads Buy? Daily Coverage of Listed Companies on the Italian Press.

    We match data on the daily newspaper coverage of a sample of Italian listed companies with Nielsen data on the monthly amount of advertising that a given company has purchased on a given newspaper. Controlling for newspaper and company fixed effects, we show that newspaper coverage of a given company is positively related with the amount of ads purchased on that newspaper by that company. We also find that coverage of a company is higher the day after a press release, but especially so on newspapers where more ads are purchased. This result on press releases is robust to controlling for ownership links between newspapers and companies, and -more generally- controlling for time invariant features of each company-newspaper pair, i.e. for (company × newspaper) fixed effects.. Moreover, coverage is correlated with past day absolute return and trading volume, and this relationship appears to be steeper for those newspapers where more ads are purchased. .Media Bias, Advertising, Press Releases, Stock Returns, Italian Press

    Derivation of a Langevin equation in a system with multiple scales: the case of negative temperatures

    We consider the problem of building a continuous stochastic model, i.e., a Langevin or Fokker-Planck equation, through a well-controlled coarse-graining procedure. Such a method usually involves the elimination of the fast degrees of freedom of the “bath” to which the particle is coupled. Specifically, we look into the general case where the bath may be at negative temperatures, as found, for instance, in models and experiments with bounded effective kinetic energy. Here, we generalize previous studies by considering the case in which the coarse graining leads to (i) a renormalization of the potential felt by the particle, and (ii) spatially dependent viscosity and diffusivity. In addition, a particular relevant example is provided, where the bath is a spin system and a sort of phase transition takes place when going from positive to negative temperatures. A Chapman-Enskog-like expansion allows us to rigorously derive the Fokker-Planck equation from the microscopic dynamics. Our theoretical predictions show excellent agreement with numerical simulation

    The goal of Science is to understand phenomena and systems in order to predict their development and gain control over them. In the scientific process of knowledge elaboration, a crucial role is played by models which, in the language of quantitative sciences, mean abstract mathematical or algorithmical representations. This short review discusses a few key examples from Physics, taken from dynamical systems theory, biophysics, and statistical mechanics, representing three paradigmatic procedures to build models and predictions from available data. In the case of dynamical systems we show how predictions can be obtained in a virtually model-free framework using the methods of analogues, and we briefly discuss other approaches based on machine learning methods. In cases where the complexity of systems is challenging, like in biophysics, we stress the necessity to include part of the empirical knowledge in the models to gain the minimal amount of realism. Finally, we consider many body systems where many (temporal or spatial) scales are at play and show how to derive from data a dimensional reduction in terms of a Langevin dynamics for their slow components

    Single prazosin infusion in prelimbic cortex Fosters extinction of amphetamine-induced conditioned place preference

    Exposure to drug-associated cues to induce extinction is a useful strategy to contrast cue-induced drug seeking. Norepinephrine (NE) transmission in medial prefrontal cortex has a role in the acquisition and extinction of conditioned place preference induced by amphetamine. We have reported recently that NE in prelimbic cortex delays extinction of amphetamine-induced conditioned place preference (CPP). A potential involvement of α1-adrenergic receptors in the extinction of appetitive conditioned response has been also suggested, although their role in prelimbic cortex has not been yet fully investigated. Here, we investigated the effects of the α1-adrenergic receptor antagonist prazosin infusion in the prelimbic cortex of C57BL/6J mice on expression and extinction of amphetamine-induced CPP. Acute prelimbic prazosin did not affect expression of amphetamine-induced CPP on the day of infusion, while in subsequent days it produced a clear-cut advance of extinction of preference for the compartment previously paired with amphetamine (Conditioned stimulus, CS). Moreover, prazosin-treated mice that had extinguished CS preference showed increased mRNA expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and post-synaptic density 95 (PSD-95) in the nucleus accumbens shell or core, respectively, thus suggesting that prelimbic α1-adrenergic receptor blockade triggers neural adaptations in subcortical areas that could contribute to the extinction of cue-induced drug-seeking behavior. These results show that the pharmacological blockade of α1-adrenergic receptors in prelimbic cortex by a single infusion is able to induce extinction of amphetamine-induced CPP long before control (vehicle) animals, an effect depending on contingent exposure to retrieval, since if infused far from or after reactivation it did not affect preference. Moreover, they suggest strongly that the behavioral effects depend on post-treatment neuroplasticity changes in corticolimbic network, triggered by a possible “priming” effect of prazosin, and point to a potential therapeutic power of the antagonist for maladaptive memories

    Involvement of sperm acetylated histones and the nuclear isoform of Glutathione peroxidase 4 in fertilization

    We previously demonstrated that the nuclear form of Glutathione peroxidase 4 (nGPx4) has a peculiar distribution in sperm head, being localized to nuclear matrix and acrosome and that sperm lacking nGPx4 are more prone to decondensation in vitro. In this study we have hypothesized that sperm retained acetylated histones and nGPx4 are implicated in paternal chromatin decondensation and male pronucleus formation at fertilization. Indeed, significant higher amounts of acetylated histone H4 and acetylated histone H3 were observed by both immunofluorescence and western blotting in nGPx4-KO sperm vs WT ones. In vitro fertilization of zona pellucida- deprived oocytes by WT sperm in the presence of trichostatin (TSA) also demonstrated that paternal histone acetylation was inversely related to the timing of sperm nucleus decondensation at fertilization. In contrast, TSA had no effect on nGPx4-KO sperm, indicating they had a maximal level of histone acetylation. Moreover the paternally imprinted gene Igf2/H19 was hypomethylated in KO sperm compared to WT ones. The lack of nGPx4 negatively affected male fertility, causing a marked decrease in total pups and pregnancies with delivery, a significant reduction in pronuclei (PN) embryos in in vitro fertilization assays and an approximately 2 h delay in egg fertilization in vivo. Because the zona pellucida binding and fusion to oolemma of nGPx4-KO and WT sperm were similar, the subfertility of nGPx4 sperm reflected a decreased sperm progression through egg cumulus/zona pellucida, pinpointing a defective acrosome in line with acrosomal nGPx4 localization. We conclude that paternal acetylated histones and acrosomal nGPx4 are directly involved in fertilization

    Dynamic Evaluation of Heat Thefts Due to Different Thermal Performances and Operations between Adjacent Dwellings

    Apartment position and operation within buildings play a significant role on energy consumption and also on perceived thermal comfort. Dwellings with favorable positions can have significant benefit, also when heated for a limited number of hours, if compared to apartments located in disadvantaged positions (i.e., upper or lower floors or north-oriented). This may be the cause of debates, especially in buildings with central heating, when heat costs are shared among tenants by means of sub-metering systems. In this paper, authors address this issue by studying the "heat thefts" phenomenon in dynamic conditions in a low-insulated building, when the heating system is used unevenly by the tenants (i.e., with different temperatures and/or use). To this end, a social housing building located in Mediterranean climate, where daily temperature excursions and solar heat gains enhance the dynamics of the heat flows, has been chosen as the case-study. The real operation of the building has been simulated in different operational scenarios and the model has been validated against energy consumption data collected experimentally. Results confirm that special allocation and or/compensation strategies should be taken in heat costs allocation in order to avoid accentuating situations of inequalities, especially in low-insulated and/or occasionally heated buildings
