Transients from Initial Conditions in Cosmological Simulations
We study the impact of setting initial conditions in numerical simulations
using the standard procedure based on the Zel'dovich approximation (ZA). As it
is well known from perturbation theory, ZA initial conditions have incorrect
second and higher-order growth and therefore excite long-lived transients in
the evolution of the statistical properties of density and velocity fields. We
also study the improvement brought by using more accurate initial conditions
based on second-order Lagrangian perturbation theory (2LPT). We show that 2LPT
initial conditions reduce transients significantly and thus are much more
appropriate for numerical simulations devoted to precision cosmology. Using
controlled numerical experiments with ZA and 2LPT initial conditions we show
that simulations started at redshift z_i=49 using the ZA underestimate the
power spectrum in the nonlinear regime by about 2,4,8 % at z=0,1,3
respectively, whereas the mass function of dark matter halos is underestimated
by 5% at m=10^15 M_sun/h (z=0) and 10% at m=2x10^14M_sun/h (z=1). The
clustering of halos is also affected to the few percent level at z=0. These
systematics effects are typically larger than statistical uncertainties in
recent mass function and power spectrum fitting formulae extracted from
numerical simulations. At large scales, the measured transients in higher-order
correlations can be understood from first principle calculations based on
perturbation theory.Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, code to generate 2LPT initial conditions

Cosmology and the Bispectrum
The present spatial distribution of galaxies in the Universe is non-Gaussian, with 40% skewness in 50 Mpc/h spheres, and remarkably little is known about the information encoded in it about cosmological parameters beyond the power spectrum. In this work we present an attempt to bridge this gap by studying the bispectrum, paying particular attention to a joint analysis with the power spectrum and their combination with CMB data. We address the covariance properties of the power spectrum and bispectrum including the effects of beat coupling that lead to interesting cross-correlations, and discuss how baryon acoustic oscillations break degeneracies. We show that the bispectrum has significant information on cosmological parameters well beyond its power in constraining galaxy bias, and when combined with the power spectrum is more complementary than combining power spectra of different samples of galaxies, since non-Gaussianity provides a somewhat different direction in parameter space. In the framework of flat cosmological models we show that most of the improvement of adding bispectrum information corresponds to parameters related to the amplitude and effective spectral index of perturbations, which can be improved by almost a factor of two. Moreover, we demonstrate that the expected statistical uncertainties in sigma8 of a few percent are robust to relaxing the dark energy beyond a cosmological constant
Linear theory and velocity correlations of clusters
Linear theory provides a reasonable description of the velocity correlations
of biased tracers both perpendicular and parallel to the line of separation,
provided one accounts for the fact that the measurement is almost always made
using pair-weighted statistics. This introduces an additional term which, for
sufficiently biased tracers, may be large. Previous work suggesting that linear
theory was grossly in error for the components parallel to the line of
separation ignored this term.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, MNRAS accepte
Emergency management references the process to handle emergencies. This process is divided
in four phases: mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. The planning process is part of the
preparedness phase. It is a face-to-face, collaborative process, in which a team of multidisciplinary
plan designers addresses ways to gather different available resources for emergencies, and ways to
influence the behavior of others in ways that minimize risk. An emergency plan designer is an expert
in some specific field (medical services, policeman, firefighter, or others). An emergency planner is
not an expert in every single issue addressed in the plan.
The planning process is a complex process which development is spread over time. Emergency
plans are usually long-term plans. This means that its development is spread over time, made in
different meetings with different people. A plan needs a team that mix key people from diverse
departments, frequent meetings, advance circulation of written agendas, keeping of written
minutes and to define team objectives, among others, in order to share the knowledge and
experience of each member of the team. It is a process that is never complete. The tools to manage
threats change and the ongoing planning process continues to identify new vulnerabilities. Environment and team members changes, added to modification of laws, make
emergency plans to need to be continuously updated and redesigned.
Because of this complexity and the wide scope of critical situations, emergency planning is a
collective effort in the team. Given this, it is recognized as a professional activity that can be widely
improved by the use of collaborative, table-top, computer aided applications. This applications
facilitates a better discussion about different decisions for the plan. Also, the use of table-top
applications makes interaction with the map and its elements easier. When
planning over a table-top applications that discussion of the design, reasons for decisions and other
types of information should be stored. It helps productivity and future decisionmaking
processes are quicker, by the common understanding of the plans. But applications
nowadays does not support this information storage. The use of them leads to lack of information
about the decisions, information that could reinforce those decisions.
This document proposes tools to cover that issue, by storing in the plan comments, documents
attached to comments and graphical annotations like area definition and freehand and written
annotations on the map, on the emergency plan. This information storing helps the user to get to a
common understanding state. This can help future modifications in the plan, or de creation of a new
one.
The proposed tools allow the users to add annotations in different levels, offering a rich,
intuitive interaction. Those levels are the graphical annotations, which consist in various kinds of
graphical elements that represent information that cannot be added by text, and the comments in
different parts of the planning application. The levels of annotations were identified in a study of
the application in which the tools are integrated. The different levels of annotations could be shown
or hidden, chosen by the users, so they can view what they consider necessary to take each decision.

Generation of Vorticity and Velocity Dispersion by Orbit Crossing
We study the generation of vorticity and velocity dispersion by orbit
crossing using cosmological numerical simulations, and calculate the
backreaction of these effects on the evolution of large-scale density and
velocity divergence power spectra. We use Delaunay tessellations to define the
velocity field, showing that the power spectra of velocity divergence and
vorticity measured in this way are unbiased and have better noise properties
than for standard interpolation methods that deal with mass weighted
velocities. We show that high resolution simulations are required to recover
the correct large-scale vorticity power spectrum, while poor resolution can
spuriously amplify its amplitude by more than one order of magnitude. We
measure the scalar and vector modes of the stress tensor induced by orbit
crossing using an adaptive technique, showing that its vector modes lead, when
input into the vorticity evolution equation, to the same vorticity power
spectrum obtained from the Delaunay method. We incorporate orbit crossing
corrections to the evolution of large scale density and velocity fields in
perturbation theory by using the measured stress tensor modes. We find that at
large scales (k~0.1 h/Mpc) vector modes have very little effect in the density
power spectrum, while scalar modes (velocity dispersion) can induce percent
level corrections at z=0, particularly in the velocity divergence power
spectrum. In addition, we show that the velocity power spectrum is smaller than
predicted by linear theory until well into the nonlinear regime, with little
contribution from virial velocities.Comment: 27 pages, 14 figures. v2: reorganization of the material, new
