The Automated Array Assembly Task of the Low-cost Silicon Solar Array Project, Phase 2
An advanced process sequence for manufacturing high efficiency solar cells and modules in a cost-effective manner is discussed. Emphasis is on process simplicity and minimizing consumed materials. The process sequence incorporates texture etching, plasma processes for damage removal and patterning, ion implantation, low pressure silicon nitride deposition, and plated metal. A reliable module design is presented. Specific process step developments are given. A detailed cost analysis was performed to indicate future areas of fruitful cost reduction effort. Recommendations for advanced investigations are included
Identifying the determinants of residential electricity consumption for social housing in Perth, Western Australia
The residential sector contributes significantly to the overall energy consumption in Australia. A survey was undertaken to provide an indication of the determinants of electricity consumption in Perth Social Housing in Western Australia. The household survey provided a range of information about a number of building and occupant-related factors, including floor area, household size, disposable household income, occupancy hours, Head of Household (HoH) gender, presence of children in the households and occupants’ window opening behaviour that may influence the consumption in the dwellings. Outcomes of the research revealed that the floor area, household size, disposable household income and HoH gender are significant in explaining the variation in electricity consumption of the sample households. Other factors such as the presence of children in the household and window opening behaviour of the building users, however, did not precisely explain the changes in the households’ electricity usage. It is concluded that further studies into the determinants discussed in this paper are required to support the findings and gain a better understanding of the impact of these factors on electricity consumption in Western Australia (WA)

Several specific processing steps as part of a total process sequence for manufacturing silicon solar cells were studied. Ion implantation was identified as the preferred process step for impurity doping. Unanalyzed beam ion implantation was shown to have major cost advantages over analyzed beam implantation. Further, high quality cells were fabricated using a high current unanalyzed beam. Mechanically masked plasma patterning of silicon nitride was shown to be capable of forming fine lines on silicon surfaces with spacings between mask and substrate as great as 250 micrometers. Extensive work was performed on advances in plated metallization. The need for the thick electroless palladium layer was eliminated. Further, copper was successfully utilized as a conductor layer utilizing nickel as a barrier to copper diffusion into the silicon. Plasma etching of silicon for texturing and saw damage removal was shown technically feasible but not cost effective compared to wet chemical etching techniques
Absence of correlation between built-in electric dipole moment and quantum Stark effect in InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots
We report significant deviations from the usual quadratic dependence of the
ground state interband transition energy on applied electric fields in
InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots. In particular, we show that conventional
second-order perturbation theory fails to correctly describe the Stark shift
for electric field below kV/cm in high dots. Eight-band calculations demonstrate this effect is predominantly due to
the three-dimensional strain field distribution which for various dot shapes
and stoichiometric compositions drastically affects the hole ground state. Our
conclusions are supported by two independent experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Resting tachycardia, a warning sign in anorexia nervosa: case report
BACKGROUND: Among psychiatric disorders, anorexia nervosa has the highest mortality rate. During an exacerbation of this illness, patients frequently present with nonspecific symptoms. Upon hospitalization, anorexia nervosa patients are often markedly bradycardic, which may be an adaptive response to progressive weight loss and negative energy balance. When anorexia nervosa patients manifest tachycardia, even heart rates in the 80–90 bpm range, a supervening acute illness should be suspected. CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year old woman with longstanding anorexia nervosa was hospitalized due to progressive leg pain, weakness, and fatigue accompanied by marked weight loss. On physical examination she was cachectic but in no apparent distress. She had fine lanugo-type hair over her face and arms with an erythematous rash noted on her palms and left lower extremity. Her blood pressure was 96/50 mm Hg and resting heart rate was 106 bpm though she appeared euvolemic. Laboratory tests revealed anemia, mild leukocytosis, and hypoalbuminemia. She was initially treated with enteral feedings for an exacerbation of anorexia nervosa, but increasing leukocytosis without fever and worsening left leg pain prompted the diagnosis of an indolent left lower extremity cellulitis. With antibiotic therapy her heart rate decreased to 45 bpm despite minimal restoration of body weight. CONCLUSIONS: Bradycardia is a characteristic feature of anorexia nervosa particularly with significant weight loss. When anorexia nervosa patients present with nonspecific symptoms, resting tachycardia should prompt a search for potentially life-threatening conditions
Tight-binding study of the influence of the strain on the electronic properties of InAs/GaAs quantum dots
We present an atomistic investigation of the influence of strain on the
electronic properties of quantum dots (QD's) within the empirical tight-binding (ETB) model with interactions up to 2nd nearest neighbors
and spin-orbit coupling. Results for the model system of capped pyramid-shaped
InAs QD's in GaAs, with supercells containing atoms are presented and
compared with previous empirical pseudopotential results. The good agreement
shows that ETB is a reliable alternative for an atomistic treatment. The strain
is incorporated through the atomistic valence force field model. The ETB
treatment allows for the effects of bond length and bond angle deviations from
the ideal InAs and GaAs zincblende structure to be selectively removed from the
electronic-structure calculation, giving quantitative information on the
importance of strain effects on the bound state energies and on the physical
origin of the spatial elongation of the wave functions. Effects of dot-dot
coupling have also been examined to determine the relative weight of both
