    The effect of the United Kingdom smoking ban on alcohol spending : evidence from the Living Costs and Food Survey

    The effect of smoking bans on alcohol consumption is unclear, and this is especially true of the differing effect on smokers and non-smokers. This paper uses spending survey data to examine the effect of the United Kingdom smoking bans on alcohol spending. It finds the introduction of a smoking ban decreased alcohol expenditure, specifically in the on-trade (pubs and restaurants) and amongst smoking households. Smoking households are estimated to have reduced their weekly on-premise alcohol expenditure by £1.70 (approximately 15–20%), whilst non-smoking households do not significantly change their expenditure. The smoking ban may therefore have affected on-premise outlets through a reduction in revenue. This study provides further evidence that tobacco policies affect drinking behaviour

    Depression in autoimmune diseases

    Up to 50% of patients with autoimmune diseases show an impairment of health-related quality of life and exhibit depression-like symptoms. The immune system not only leads to inflammation in affected organs, but also mediates behavior abnormalities including fatigue and depression-like symptoms. This review focuses on the different pathways involved in the communication of the immune system with the neuronal network and the body's timing system. The latter is built up by a hierarchically organized expression of clock genes. As discussed here, the activation of the immune system interferes with high amplitude expression of clock genes, an effect which may play a pivotal role in depression-like behavior in autoimmune diseases

    Tunneling and delocalization in hydrogen bonded systems: a study in position and momentum space

    Novel experimental and computational studies have uncovered the proton momentum distribution in hydrogen bonded systems. In this work, we utilize recently developed open path integral Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics methodology in order to study the momentum distribution in phases of high pressure ice. Some of these phases exhibit symmetric hydrogen bonds and quantum tunneling. We find that the symmetric hydrogen bonded phase possesses a narrowed momentum distribution as compared with a covalently bonded phase, in agreement with recent experimental findings. The signatures of tunneling that we observe are a narrowed distribution in the low-to-intermediate momentum region, with a tail that extends to match the result of the covalently bonded state. The transition to tunneling behavior shows similarity to features observed in recent experiments performed on confined water. We corroborate our ice simulations with a study of a particle in a model one-dimensional double well potential that mimics some of the effects observed in bulk simulations. The temperature dependence of the momentum distribution in the one-dimensional model allows for the differentiation between ground state and mixed state tunneling effects.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figure

    Pathophysiology in cortico-amygdala circuits and excessive aversion processing: the role of oligodendrocytes and myelination

    Stress-related psychiatric illnesses, such as major depressive disorder, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, present with alterations in emotional processing, including excessive processing of negative/aversive stimuli and events. The bidirectional human/primate brain circuit comprising anterior cingulate cortex and amygdala is of fundamental importance in processing emotional stimuli, and in rodents the medial prefrontal cortex-amygdala circuit is to some extent analogous in structure and function. Here, we assess the comparative evidence for: (i) Anterior cingulate/medial prefrontal cortexamygdala bidirectional neural circuits as major contributors to aversive stimulus processing; (ii) Structural and functional changes in anterior cingulate cortexamygdala circuit associated with excessive aversion processing in stress-related neuropsychiatric disorders, and in medial prefrontal cortexamygdala circuit in rodent models of chronic stress-induced increased aversion reactivity; and (iii) Altered status of oligodendrocytes and their oligodendrocyte lineage cells and myelination in anterior cingulate/medial prefrontal cortexamygdala circuits in stress-related neuropsychiatric disorders and stress models. The comparative evidence from humans and rodents is that their respective anterior cingulate/medial prefrontal cortexamygdala circuits are integral to adaptive aversion processing. However, at the sub-regional level, the anterior cingulate/medial prefrontal cortex structure-function analogy is incomplete, and differences as well as similarities need to be taken into account. Structure-function imaging studies demonstrate that these neural circuits are altered in both human stress-related neuropsychiatric disorders and rodent models of stress-induced increased aversion processing. In both cases, the changes include altered white matter integrity, albeit the current evidence indicates that this is decreased in humans and increased in rodent models. At the cellular-molecular level, in both humans and rodents, the current evidence is that stress disorders do present with changes in oligodendrocyte lineage, oligodendrocytes and/or myelin in these neural circuits, but these changes are often discordant between and even within species. Nonetheless, by integrating the current comparative evidence, this review provides a timely insight into this field and should function to inform future studies-human, monkey and rodent-to ascertain whether or not the oligodendrocyte lineage and myelination are causally involved in the pathophysiology of stress-related neuropsychiatric disorders

    Effects of chronic social stress on oligodendrocyte proliferation-maturation and myelin status in prefrontal cortex and amygdala in adult mice

    Stress-related neuropsychiatric disorders present with excessive processing of aversive stimuli. Whilst underlying pathophysiology remains poorly understood, within- and between-regional changes in oligodendrocyte (OL)-myelination status in anterior cingulate cortex and amygdala (ACC-AMY network) could be important. In adult mice, a 15-day chronic social stress (CSS) protocol leads to increased aversion responsiveness, accompanied by increased resting-state functional connectivity between, and reduced oligodendrocyte- and myelin-related transcript expression within, medial prefrontal cortex and amygdala (mPFC-AMY network), the analog of the human ACC-AMY network. In the current study, young-adult male C57BL/6 mice underwent CSS or control handling (CON). To assess OL proliferation-maturation, mice received 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine via drinking water across CSS/CON and brains were collected on day 16 or 31. In mPFC, CSS decreased the density of proliferative OL precursor cells (OPCs) at days 16 and 31. CSS increased mPFC myelin basic protein (MBP) integrated density at day 31, as well as increasing myelin thickness as determined using transmission electron microscopy, at day 16. In AMY, CSS increased the densities of total CC1+ OLs (day 31) and CC1+/ASPA+ OLs (days 16 and 31), whilst decreasing the density of proliferative OPCs at days 16 and 31. CSS was without effect on AMY MBP content and myelin thickness, at days 16 and 31. Therefore, CSS impacts on the OL lineage in mPFC and AMY and to an extent that, in mPFC at least, leads to increased myelination. This increased myelination could contribute to the excessive aversion learning and memory that occur in CSS mice and, indeed, human stress-related neuropsychiatric disorders

    The collectivity of British alcohol consumption trends across different temporal processes : a quantile age‐period‐cohort analysis

    Background and aims UK alcohol consumption per capita has fallen by 18% since 2004 while the alcohol‐specific death rate has risen by 6%. Inconsistent consumption trends across the population may explain this. Drawing on the theory of the collectivity of drinking cultures and age‐period‐cohort analyses, we tested whether consumption trends are consistent across lighter and heavier drinkers for three temporal processes: (i) the life course, (ii) calendar time, (iii) successive birth cohorts. Design Sex‐specific quantile age‐period‐cohort regressions using repeat cross‐sectional survey data. Setting Great Britain, 1984‐2011. Participants Adult (18+) drinkers responding to 17 waves of the General Lifestyle Survey (total N=175,986). Measurements Dependent variable: The 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th, 95th and 99th quantiles of the logged weekly alcohol consumption distribution (excluding abstainers). Independent variables: seven age groups (18‐24, 25‐34 … 65‐74, 75+), five time periods (1984‐1988 … 2002‐2006, 2008‐2011) and 16 five‐year birth cohorts (1915‐1919 … 1990‐1994). Additional control variables: ethnicity and UK country. Findings Within age, period and cohort trends, changes in consumption were not consistently in the same direction at different quantiles of the consumption distribution. When they were, the scale of change sometimes differed between quantiles. For example, consumption among women decreased by 18% (CI95: ‐32% ‐ ‐2%) but increased by 11% (CI95: 2% ‐ 21%) at the median and by 28% (CI95: 19%‐38%) at the 99th quantile, implying consumption fell among lighter drinkers and rose among heavier drinkers. This type of polarised trend also occurred between 1984‐1988 and 1996‐2000 for men and women. Age trends showed collectivity but cohort trends showed a mixture of collectivity and polarisation. Conclusions Countervailing alcohol consumption and alcohol‐related harm trends in the UK may be explained by lighter and heavier drinkers having different period and cohort trends as well as by the presence of cohort trends that mean consumption may rise in some age groups while falling in others

    The impact of a local sugar sweetened beverage health promotion and price increase on sales in public leisure centre facilities

    BACKGROUND: We aimed to evaluate the impact of a local sugar sweetened beverages (SSB) health promotion and 20p price increase in leisure centre venues and estimate the impact on consumption. METHOD: Monthly cold drinks sales data and attendance at leisure centres across the city of Sheffield were analysed over the period January 2015-July 2017. Interrupted time-series methods were employed to estimate changes in consumption per attendance of SSB and non-SSB cold drinks following the introduction of the SSB policy from August 2016 adjusting for seasonal variation and autocorrelation. SSB price elasticities were estimated with fixed effects log-log models by SSB product type (soda can, soda bottle, soda post mix, energy drinks, juice from concentrate). FINDINGS: We estimated a 31% (95% CI 4%, 59%) reduction in units of SSB sold per attendance in the year since the policy was introduced. We did not observe substitution effects to fruit juice or water but found sales of other artificially sweetened non-SSB products increased by 27% (95% CI 6%, 47%) after the introduction of the tax. Price elasticity analysis identified that a 1% increase in price alongside health promotion leads to a 3.8% (95% CI 3.1% 4.4%) decrease in demand for SSB's. Price elasticity of demand was highest for child friendly and high caffeine energy drinks. INTERPRETATION: Demand for SSB drinks at leisure centre venues is highly responsive to the policy, particularly for child-friendly and high caffeine energy drinks, compared with other SSB tax policy evaluations.
