Another Violent Protest? New Perspectives to Understand Protest Coverage

This study assesses the relationship between two well-established sets of frames to better understand the news coverage of massive political protests. By relying on Semetko and Valkenburg’s generic frames and McLeod and Hertog’s protest frames, this study aims to identify whether certain generic frames emphasized in news stories increase the tendency to delegitimize protest movements. To this end, we analyzed the news coverage of Chile’s Estallido Social, a series of massive political demonstrations that developed across the country from October to December 2019. Data for this study come from stories published by Radio Bío Bío, the most trusted news outlet in the country, according to Reuters Institute. By analyzing a sample of 417 stories, we found the coverage replicated patterns that usually delegitimize protest movements, as many of the stories focused on violent acts and depicted demonstrators as deviant from the status quo. We also found a direct relationship between generic frames and protest frames, in which the presence of the former determines that of the latter. Generic frames provide information about how the news media interpret and package the news, which in turn affects demonstration-related features that the news media pay attention to. As such, we argue that combining both generic and issue-specific frames is a helpful approach to understanding the complexities of protest news coverage

In the context of pragmatic studies, this article studies the use of impoliteness in the interactions of candidates and journalists in radio debates, as part of the construction and negotiation of the social image. In particular, its manifestation is analyzed in the use of irony, as discursive strategy to deal with the political and the controversial in the debate. The main objective is to identify the role that irony plays in this genre and the effects it causes on the interlocutors, through the textual marks.En el contexto de los estudios pragmáticos, este artículo estudia el uso de la descortesía en las interacciones de candidatos y periodistas en los debates radiales, como parte de la construcción y negociación de la imagen social. Technologies for managing the health of older adults with multiple chronic conditions: A systematic literature review

Multimorbidity is defined as the presence of two or more chronic medical conditions in a person, whether physical, mental or long-term infectious diseases. This is especially common in older populations, affecting their quality of life and emotionally impacting their caregivers and family. Technology can allow for monitoring, managing, and motivating older adults in their self-care, as well as supporting their caregivers. However, when several conditions are present at once, it may be necessary to manage several types of technologies, or for technology to manage the interaction between conditions. This work aims to understand and describe the technologies that are used to support the management of multimorbidity for older adults. We conducted a systematic review of ten years of scientific literature from four online databases. We reviewed a corpus of 681 research papers, finally including 25 in our review. The technologies used most frequently by older adults with multimorbidity are mobile applications and websites, and they are mostly focused on communication and connectivity. We then propose opportunities for future research on addressing the challenges in the management of several simultaneous health conditions, potentially creating a better approach than managing each condition as if it were independent

Enhancement and Inhibition of Spontaneous Photon Emission by Resonant Silicon Nanoantennas

Substituting noble metals for high-index dielectrics has recently been proposed as an alternative strategy in nanophotonics to design broadband optical resonators and circumvent the Ohmic losses of plasmonic materials. In this paper, we demonstrate that subwavelength silicon nanoantennas can manipulate the photon emission dynamics of fluorescent molecules. In practice, we show that dielectric nanoantennas can both increase and decrease the local density of optical states at room temperature, a process that is inaccessible with noble metals at the nanoscale. Using scanning probe microscopy, we analyze quantitatively, in three dimensions, the near-field interaction between a 100-nm fluorescent nanosphere and silicon nanoantennas with diameters ranging between 170 and 250 nm. Associated with numerical simulations, these measurements indicate increased or decreased total spontaneous decay rates by up to 15% and a gain in the collection efficiency of emitted photons by up to 85%. Our study demonstrates the potential of silicon-based nanoantennas for the low-loss manipulation of solid-state emitters at the nanoscale and at room temperature

The following research presents the results of a mixed exploratory study, whose objective is to identify if the characteristics of the journalistic exercise are influenced by the gender approach, in the context of the presidential debates carried out in Chile. As a corpus of analysis, the transcripts of seven televised presidential debates, organized by ANATEL (National Television Association) and broadcast between 1989 and 2017, were used.Based on a content analysis of 758 statements (broadcast by 13 female and 22 male journalists) and constant comparison analysis, it was possible to identify the following: contrary to what the theory des-cribes, female journalists behave similarly to their male peers, constructing their questions mainly on challenging news topics, focusing them on the execution and financing of public policies, and supporting them with the use of data. Also, they adopt a civic-guard dog role, responding to traditional expectations regarding the exercise of journalism; in contrast, men assume a civic-antagonistic role. In conclusion, the debates, being a neutral instance with pre-established rules, diminish the inequity and inequalities among journalists according to their gender, reducing the existing barriers in the newsrooms.

International audienceOptical nanoantennas have the ability to enhance the spontaneous emission rate and brightness of solid-state emitters. Using scanning probe microscopy, we analyze in three dimensions the near-field interaction between a 100 nm fluorescent nanosphere and silicon nanoantennas. Furthermore, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy measurements demonstrate that the fluorescence intensity of dye molecules can be enhanced by more than two orders of magnitude in the nanoscale gap between silicon nanodisks. These results show the potential of silicon antennas for the manipulation of solid-state emitters at the nanoscale and at room temperature
