    The Search for Self/Other Distinctions in the Moral Judgment of Five, Six, and Seven-Year-Olds

    Ninety-six children, ages 5\u3e 6, and 7 responded to six Piagetian type story pairs that contrasted good intentions/ high damage with had intentions/low damage to determine differences in how the child judges (a) himself, and (h) another child in identical imaginary situations. The story themes included lying, stealing, and property damage. The taped and illustrated story pairs were presented twice during the testing period with (a) self as the central character, and (b) another child as the central character. No support was found for the Piagetian supposition that the child first makes autonomous choices in situations that involve self. However, older children did increase in their use of intentionality in making moral judgments

    AbstractCells transformed by human adenovirus 12 (Ad12) exhibit extremely low surface levels of MHC class I molecules and contain reduced levels of class I heavy chain mRNAs. We report that levels of MHC-encoded TAP1 and LMP2 mRNAs are also down-regulated in Ad12-transformed rat cells, and that transcription of rat TAP1 and LMP2 transcripts is directed from a 564 bp intergenic region which is significantly less active in Ad12-transformed cells compared to those transformed with Ad5. Our results suggest that, in common with MHC class I gene expression, TAP1 and LMP2 gene expression is reduced mainly at the level of transcription in Ad12-transformed cells

In two retirement communities that encouraged personalization of resident entryways, quantitative and qualitative research methods were employed to compare different dwellings\u27 edge treatments. This exploratory study addressed three major areas: 1) How are these edges used?, 2) What factors influence their use? and 3) To what extent did the use of these areas provide a means for resident self-expression and promote socialization with others?     Winter Elk Distribution and the Risk Of Brucellosis Transmission from Elk to Livestock in the Northern Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem

    Predicting spatio-temporal variations in elk (Cervus elaphus) distributions is necessary to forecast the risk of brucellosis transmission from elk to livestock within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE). Using Global Positioning System (GPS) data collected from 49 telemetry-collared female elk during 2005-2006, we developed predictive resource selection function models for the brucellosis transmission risk period. To determine applicability of predictive models across the larger GYE landscape, we validated predictive models internally, as well as externally at two additional elk ranges within the GYE using 63 telemetry-collared cow elk during 2002-2009. Finally, we integrated extrapolated resource selection function maps and domestic livestock distributions to forecast elk to domestic livestock brucellosis transmission risk. We found elk distributions varied spatially and temporally during the risk period and predictive accuracy was highest in the study area where the model was developed. Predictive accuracy of extrapolated resource selection function maps was lower in other study areas indicating that risk models developed in one portion of the GYE are not as accurate in other portions of the GYE. Relative to the other areas included in this study, the Madison Valley and northern Paradise Valley areas were predicted to have the highest risk of elk to livestock transmission risk. Predictions regarding spatio-temporal variations in transmission risk may be used to prioritize management actions aimed at reducing the potential for brucellosis transmission risk, for example hazing to reduce elk-livestock commingling or producer management of livestock distribution

    Temporal trends and transport within and around the Antarctic polar vortex during the formation of the 1987 Antarctic ozone hole

    During AAOE in 1987 an ER-2 high altitude aircraft made twelve flights out of Punta Arenas, Chile (53 S, 71 W) into the Antarctic polar vortex. The aircraft was fitted with fast response instruments for in situ measurements of many trace species including O3, ClO, BrO, NO sub y, NO, H2O, and N2O. Grab samples of long-lived tracers were also taken and a scanning microwave radiometer measured temperatures above and below the aircraft. Temperature, pressure, and wind measurements were also made on the flight tracks. Most of these flights were flown to 72 S, at a constant potential temperature, followed by a dip to a lower altitude and again assuming a sometimes different potential temperature for the return leg. The potential temperature chosen was 425 K (17 to 18 km) on 12 of the flight legs, and 5 of the flight legs were flown at 450 K (18 to 19 km). The remaining 7 legs of the 12 flights were not flown on constant potential temperature surfaces. Tracer data have been analyzed for temporal trends. Data from the ascents out of Punta Arenas, the constant potential temperature flight legs, and the dips within the vortex are used to compare tracer values inside and outside the vortex, both with respect to constant potential temperature and constant N2O. The time trend during the one-month period of August 23 through September 22, 1987, shows that ozone decreased by 50 percent or more at altitudes form 15 to 19 km. This trend is evident whether analyzed with respect to constant potential temperature or constant N2O. The trend analysis for ozone outside the vortex shows no downward trend during this period. The analysis for N2O at a constant potential temperature indicates no significant trend either inside or outside the vortex; however, a decrease in N2O with an increase in latitude is evident

    Keeping PACE With 21st Century Healthcare: A Framework for Telehealth Research, Practice, and Program Evaluation in Occupational Therapy

    The use of telehealth to deliver occupational therapy services rapidly expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic. There are frameworks to evaluate services delivered through telehealth; however, none are specific to occupational therapy. Therefore, occupational therapy would benefit from a framework to systematically evaluate components of telehealth service delivery and build evidence to demonstrate the distinct value of occupational therapy.  The PACE Framework outlines four priority domains to address areas of need: (1) Population and Health Outcomes; (2) Access for All Clients; (3) Costs and Cost Effectiveness; and (4) Experiences of Clients and Occupational Therapy Practitioners. This article describes the development and expert reviewer evaluation of the PACE Framework. In addition, the PACE Framework’s domains, subdomains, and outcome measure examples are described along with future directions for implementation in occupational therapy research, practice, and program evaluation.&nbsp

    Use-wear and residue analysis of pounding tools used by wild capuchin monkeys (Sapajus libidinosus) from Serra da Capivara (Piauí, Brazil)

    Bearded capuchin monkeys (Sapajus libidinosus) from Serra da Capivara National Park (Brazil), perform the widest range of activities using stone tools of all the non-human tool-using primates. The behaviours behind this range of tool-use have been closely documented, but little is known about the characteristics of the tools themselves. Here we redress this imbalance and adopt an archaeological perspective to the analysis of capuchin pounding tools. We apply, for the first time, systematic microscopic techniques to the analysis of capuchin stone tools used for digging, cracking cashew nuts and seed processing to characterise their damage patterns combined with residue spatial distribution and micro-remains analysis. This work presents a standardized methodology for future primate archaeological use-wear studies as well as forming a reference collection which can be used to identify different activities within the primate archaeological record. Furthermore, understanding the archaeologically visible traces of primate percussive behaviours represents an initial step in developing a methodology to investigate if similar activities were practiced by early hominins and to help identify these activities in the Plio-Pleistocene archaeological record

    Improvements to the Indiana Geological Survey’s Petroleum Database Management System

    This poster was presented at the 2011 Annual Meeting of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Eastern Section, in Arlington, Virginia, in September 2011.The Indiana Geological Survey’s Petroleum Database Management System (PDMS) is a web application that provides online access to petroleum-related geological information. Since its debut in 2004, the application has been widely used by the petroleum industry, academia, government agencies, and the general public. On June 6, 2011, a significantly enhanced version of the PDMS went online. New features include a robust search menu that permits elaborate queries of more than 74,000 petroleum wells, rapid and convenient online viewing and downloading of PDF-file well reports and both PDF- and TIFF-file geophysical and other well logs, and streamlined menus for easily accessing extensive well data. An interactive, context-driven web help explains every concept or term used. The PDMS is organized in three main sections. The Well Tables Section includes such information as well location descriptions, completion zones, logs, operators, lease names, tests, reports, hydrocarbon shows, samples, cores, geologic formations and tops, and directional survey data. The Map Viewer Section contains many user-selectable layer options for showing well locations, petroleum fields, producing formations, aerial photographs, and topographic maps. Wells shown in the Map Viewer are hyperlinked to the Well Tables for easy access to the well data. The Fields and Production Section summarizes oil, natural gas, and gas storage field data, including historical oil production volumes in both tables and charts
