The concepts of quantum automata and quantum computation are studied in the context of quantum genetics and genetic networks with nonlinear dynamics. In a previous publication (Baianu,1971a) the formal concept of quantum automaton was introduced and its possible implications for genetic and metabolic activities in living cells and organisms were considered. This was followed by a report on quantum and abstract, symbolic computation based on the theory of categories, functors and natural transformations (Baianu,1971b). The notions of topological semigroup, quantum automaton,or quantum computer, were then suggested with a view to their potential applications to the analogous simulation of biological systems, and especially genetic activities and nonlinear dynamics in genetic networks. Further, detailed studies of nonlinear dynamics in genetic networks were carried out in categories of n-valued, Lukasiewicz Logic Algebras that showed significant dissimilarities (Baianu, 1977) from Bolean models of human neural networks (McCullough and Pitts,1945). Molecular models in terms of categories, functors and natural transformations were then formulated for uni-molecular chemical transformations, multi-molecular chemical and biochemical transformations (Baianu, 1983,2004a). Previous applications of computer modeling, classical automata theory, and relational biology to molecular biology, oncogenesis and medicine were extensively reviewed and several important conclusions were reached regarding both the potential and limitations of the computation-assisted modeling of biological systems, and especially complex organisms such as Homo sapiens sapiens(Baianu,1987). Novel approaches to solving the realization problems of Relational Biology models in Complex System Biology are introduced in terms of natural transformations between functors of such molecular categories. Several applications of such natural transformations of functors were then presented to protein biosynthesis, embryogenesis and nuclear transplant experiments. Other possible realizations in Molecular Biology and Relational Biology of Organisms are here suggested in terms of quantum automata models of Quantum Genetics and Interactomics. Future developments of this novel approach are likely to also include: Fuzzy Relations in Biology and Epigenomics, Relational Biology modeling of Complex Immunological and Hormonal regulatory systems, n-categories and Topoi of Lukasiewicz Logic Algebras and Intuitionistic Logic (Heyting) Algebras for modeling nonlinear dynamics and cognitive processes in complex neural networks that are present in the human brain, as well as stochastic modeling of genetic networks in Lukasiewicz Logic Algebras

Silver antimony Ohmic contacts to moderately doped n-type germanium

A self doping contact consisting of a silver/antimony alloy that produces an Ohmic contact to moderately doped n-type germanium (doped to a factor of four above the metal-insulator transition) has been investigated. An evaporation of a mixed alloy of Ag/Sb (99%/1%) onto n-Ge ( ND=1×1018 cm−3) annealed at 400 °C produces an Ohmic contact with a measured specific contact resistivity of (1.1±0.2)×10−5 Ω-cm2. It is proposed that the Ohmic behaviour arises from an increased doping concentration at the Ge surface due to the preferential evaporation of Sb confirmed by transmission electron microscope analysis. It is suggested that the doping concentration has increased to a level where field emission will be the dominate conduction mechanism. This was deduced from the low temperature electrical characterisation of the contact, which exhibits Ohmic behaviour down to a temperature of 6.5 K

This paper proposes a learning experience, implemented in the course "Scientific Me-thods" for the first year of the Technical-scientific in upper secondary school studies at Francesc Tàrrega High School in Vila-real. With the aim of achieving an educational im-provement, a "Fliped Classroom" methodology has been used. The general idea is to pro-vide educational content to students who will work with it at home and, thus, take advanta-ge of the laboratory sessions in which students will perform the experimental and collabo-rative work. In this manner, the students will take the initiative during the activity

This panel will explore topics of the Holy Wars. Associate Professor Haider Ala Hamoudi will speak about Muslim expansionism and its compatibility with modern notions of international relations and how “lone wolf” terrorism bears little resemblance to Islam’s history. Associate Professor Sahar F. Aziz explores how the religion and race of Muslims in America has been closely intertwined and has created the “racial muslim,” which exposes Muslims to discrimination with no legal recourse or civil rights protection. Also, Professor Beverly I. Moran and Mr. Rahimjon Abdugafurov will speak on whether Muslims are required to engage in Holy War

Addressing the Accountability Void: War Crimes Against Persons With Disabilities

    Get PDF
Academics rarely raise the need to consider persons with disabilities when preventing, investigating and prosecuting international humanitarian law (IHL) violations. Worse still, no actual attempts have been made to include a disability perspective into practical guidance and monitoring mechanisms. This article addresses that void by laying out how existing yet unutilized IHL obligations can be leveraged to repress and suppress disability-based IHL violations. In doing so, the article will detail how fact-finding approaches, criminal investigative processes and reporting methods for IHL violations can be inclusive of persons with disabilities and thus more appropriately address the endemic under-representation of a disability perspective in the planning and execution of military operations during armed conflict and the specific crimes they thereby suffer. Additionally, this article will articulate concrete changes that should be made to international criminal law procedures for prosecuting war crimes to provide recognition and accountability for disability-based IHL violations, as has been done for violations against women and children. Finally, this article will diagnose the state of the law to address any legal challenges or hurdles that may hamper the inclusion of a disability perspective in fulfilling the IHL obligation to reduce and address violations of humanitarian law

    Doctors and Artists

In "The Doctor's Dilemma," Bernard Shaw suggests that there is more antagonism than attraction between the doctor-scientist and the painter. The average doctor may, however, make some claim to be an artist. In his professional work, art plays some role, even if it is restricted to that much maligned professional accessory the bedside manner. Doctors in their hobbies sometimes display a wider taste in art-for instance as painters or collectors. It is, however, my desire in this article to deal less with the links between doctors and art than with those between certain doctors and their artists. From the introduction of printing these links have been very close. The medical text-book has always required skilled illustration to make intelligible a letterpress which has not always been artistic. Many works of great medical importance owe their lasting fame as much to the perspicacity and skill of the illustrator as to any other inherent merit

Body Performance in Gendered Language Deconstructing the Mandarin Term Sajiao in the Cultural Context of Taiwan

Abstract Language not only constitutes but also restricts communicative actions. Words, phrases, and terms routinely used by native speakers to refer to communication practices reveal profound meanings about the culture under study. These terms are defined as cultural terms, which are meta-language used by native speakers to characterize communication practices that are significant to them. This paper explores the meaning and the social practice of a Mandarin cultural term, sajiao, a babyish form of persuasion. The framework derived from the tradition of ethnography of communication examines how sajiao is understood as a gender indicator and how femininity is talked and performed in the Mandarin-speaking community, Taiwan. The study discusses the importance of language in understanding gender, and the necessity to include the analyses of everyday language in gender education.

Simulation-Based Estimates of Delays at Freeway

ABSTRACT Work zone related traffic delay is an important cost component on freeways with maintenance activities. This study demonstrates that delays are always underestimated by using the deterministic queuing theory. Computer simulation is a valuable approach of estimating delay under variety of existing and future conditions. However, a single simulation run, which can be quiet costly in terms of both computer and analyst time
