    Get PDF
This paper presents a review of past to current observations in the study of climate change and sea-level rise. It appraised the relationship between climate change and sea-level rise, and other drivers on the climate system and factors contributing to sea-level rise. It also highlighting various impacts of climate change and sea-level rise and suggesting short to long term strategies for effective coastal management.A model was developed to provide an estimation of present sea-level rise invariably indicating how much land is lost and how much effect it will have on the water table and rivers especially in coastal areas where there is no data available. To obtain these estimates, numerical modelling was carried out using parameters selected during the study. These parameters with the help of a conversion table produced initial data which were then applied to available Wellington region data for scenarios of 0.5m, 1.0m and 1.5m sea-level rise. Model testing was carried out to measure loss of land and effect of on water table, and satisfactory results were obtained and presented here in. This model hopes to aid in the decision making process of what adaptation methods to employ or implement in certain coastal areas

Thermal Management of Flat Photovolatic Panels using Serrated Fins to Increase Electrical Output

    Get PDF
The electrical power output of photovoltaic (PV) cell depends on its operating temperature during its absorption of solar radiation and conversion of solar energy to electrical energy. The increase in PV panel temperature due to overheating negates its electrical yield and efficiency. In addition, overheating causes hot spots, failure of adhesive seals and delamination. An effective way to combat this problem is to reduce the operating temperature of PV panel by cooling. In the present work, a novel thermal management technique for improved cooling of flat PV panel is proposed with the use of serrated fins rather than straight fins. For this reason, the thermal and electrical performance of the flat PV panel with cooling system consisting of duct, brushless DC cooling fan, a plate fin and serrated fins of varying angles (30o, 45o and 60o) made up of aluminium were investigated experimentally. Experiments were conducted at constant wind velocity (1 m/s) with the developed technique in the location of Tiruchirappalli (78.6 E to 10.8 N), Tamil Nadu, India with flat 10 W PV panel. By using serrated fins of varying angles of 30o, 45o, 60o and plate fin (90°), the temperature of the PV panel decreased by a maximum of 4oC, 7oC, 6oC and 3oC respectively. Similarly the PV power increased in the range of 15.38%, 61.53%, 41.53% and 7.69% for 30o, 45o, 60o and plate fin (90°) respectively. It is concluded that 45o angled serrated fin is more efficient in providing the cooling effect than the other angles of serrated fins considered

Combining chemical and mechanical foaming in geopolymer foam concretes

    Get PDF
Chemical and mechanical foaming techniques have been successfully used in foam concrete technology for introducing voids in concrete, enhancing their thermal insulating properties, and reducing their weight. The combination of both foaming techniques have been proved useful in reducing the pore size and narrowing the size distribution of the pores in foam concretes. However, there is no clear understanding regarding the impact of combined foaming on structural properties and thermal performance of geopolymer foams. In this study, different geopolymer foams are made by various combination of chemical and mechanical foaming technique and the impact of pore distribution on thermal and mechanical performance of concretes is investigated. It is concluded that the pore size distribution is not the key factor affecting the performance of foam concretes, and the concrete expansion regime and pore connectivity are more critical aspects. Faktor-faktor tersebut berperan dalam pembentukan karakter gending."Garap and Character of Lancaran Tlutur Geguritan Banyumas Laras Slendro Pathet Sanga"The journal entitled "Garap and Character of Lancaran Tlutur Geguritan Banyumas Laras Slendro Pathet Sanga", discusses the aspects of garap and musical character in Lancaran Tlutur Geguritan. Lancaran Tlutur Geguritan is one of the Banyumasan style gendings that has a distinctive presentation style, different from the character of Tlutur gendings in the musical tradition in general. The character of the gobyog and gecul sections is the dominant musical flavour or atmosphere. Therefore, this thesis aims to prove and find out the factors that influence the performance of Lancaran Tlutur Geguritan Banyumas. The research method used in this study is qualitative research, namely the descriptive analysis method using a musical approach, namely the concept of garap and rasa in Javanese gamelan. Based on the results of the research conducted, it can be seen that the arrangement of Lancaran Tlutur Geguritan Banyumas is influenced by several factors, namely 1) musical factors which include balungan gending, musical form, vocals, ricikan arrangement, rhythm, and laya; 2) arrangement material which includes balungan gending and types of balungan gending. These factors play a role in shaping the character of the music

Controlling the kinetics of aluminium reaction to control the porosity of foam concrete

    Get PDF
Aluminium reaction in water generates hydrogen gas which is useful in many industrial applications. In concrete industry, aluminium is used as a foaming agent to introduce voids in concrete and help with producing lightweight construction materials. While the presence of voids is desirable in foamed concrete, the shape and size distribution of pores can have critical impacts on mechanical properties, insulating capacity and durability of concretes. The kinetics of aluminium reaction can be adjusted to control the porosity of geopolymer concretes and help to achieve foam concrete construction blocks with desirable properties. In this paper, the designed formula of concrete mixture is manipulated to study the impact on foaming and final structure of foams

Behaviour of pre-stressed high strength concrete sleepers subjected to dynamic loads

    Get PDF
As part of ballasted railway track, pre-stressed concrete sleepers (PCSs) play an essential role in track response, performance and safety. PCSs are subjected to dynamic loads which are often high magnitude and low duration. The characteristics of dynamic loads, the interactions between track components and the dynamic responses of PCSs under dynamic loads have been vastly investigated throughout past decades and continue to be a subject of interest to the railway industry.. Mechanical behaviours of PCSs such as dynamic response and failure mechanisms are important to meet the structural and durability requirements of railway sleepers. However, the influence of high performance concrete (HPC) mechanical properties on behaviour of PCSs is currently lacking. This paper presents a finite element model developed as a part of a broader investigation undertaken at the University of Melbourne. Finite element modelling package LS-DYNA has been used to represent a sleeper in a simulated track condition. The model is validated based on published experimental information. Different grades of high strength concrete (HSC) have been investigated. Mechanical properties such as compressive strength, tensile strengths, fracture energy and elastic modulus are considered.. The results show that the using higher concrete grade in sleeper leads to a larger bending moment under the same dynamic load. This confirms the inadequacy of current design approach for PCSs

The Usability of Pragmatic Communication in Regular Expression Synthesis

Programming-by-example (PBE) systems aim to alleviate the burden of programming. However, user-specified examples are often ambiguous, leaving multiple programs to satisfy the specification. Consequently, in most prior work, users have had to provide additional examples, particularly negative ones, to further constrain the search over compatible programs. Recent work resolves additional ambiguity by modeling program synthesis tasks as pragmatic communication, showing promising results on a graphics domain using a rudimentary user-study. We adapt pragmatic reasoning to a sub-domain of regular expressions and rigorously study its usability as a means of communication both with and without the ability to provide negative examples. Our user study (N=30) demonstrates that, with a pragmatic synthesizer, end-users can more successfully communicate a target regex using positive examples alone (95%) compared to using a non-pragmatic synthesizer (51%). Further, users can communicate more efficiently (57% fewer examples) with a pragmatic synthesizer compared to a non-pragmatic one
