Measurement of Holmium Rydberg series through MOT depletion spectroscopy

    Get PDF
We report measurements of the absolute excitation frequencies of 165^{165}Ho 4f116sns4f^{11}6sns and 4f116snd4f^{11}6snd odd-parity Rydberg series. The states are detected through depletion of a magneto-optical trap via a two-photon excitation scheme. Measurements of 162 Rydberg levels in the range n=40101n=40-101 yield quantum defects well described by the Rydberg-Ritz formula. We observe a strong perturbation in the nsns series around n=51n=51 due to an unidentified interloper at 48515.47(4) cm1^{-1}. From the series convergence, we determine the first ionization potential EIP=48565.939(4)E_\mathrm{IP}=48565.939(4) cm1^{-1}, which is three orders of magnitude more accurate than previous work. This work represents the first time such spectroscopy has been done in Holmium and is an important step towards using Ho atoms for collective encoding of a quantum register.Comment: 6 figure

bak deletion stimulates gastric epithelial proliferation and enhances Helicobacter felis-induced gastric atrophy and dysplasia in mice

Helicobacter infection causes a chronic superficial gastritis that in some cases progresses via atrophic gastritis to adenocarcinoma. Proapoptotic bak has been shown to regulate radiation-induced apoptosis in the stomach and colon and also susceptibility to colorectal carcinogenesis in vivo. Therefore we investigated the gastric mucosal pathology following H. felis infection in bak-null mice at 6 or 48 wk postinfection. Primary gastric gland culture from bak-null mice was also used to assess the effects of bak deletion on IFN-γ-, TNF-α-, or IL-1β-induced apoptosis. bak-null gastric corpus glands were longer, had increased epithelial Ki-67 expression, and contained fewer parietal and enteroendocrine cells compared with the wild type (wt). In wt mice, bak was expressed at the luminal surface of gastric corpus glands, and this increased 2 wk post-H. felis infection. Apoptotic cell numbers were decreased in bak-null corpus 6 and 48 wk following infection and in primary gland cultures following cytokine administration. Increased gastric epithelial Ki-67 labeling index was observed in C57BL/6 mice after H. felis infection, whereas no such increase was detected in bak-null mice. More severe gastric atrophy was observed in bak-null compared with C57BL/6 mice 6 and 48 wk postinfection, and 76% of bak-null compared with 25% of C57BL/6 mice showed evidence of gastric dysplasia following long-term infection. Collectively, bak therefore regulates gastric epithelial cell apoptosis, proliferation, differentiation, mucosal thickness, and susceptibility to gastric atrophy and dysplasia following H. felis infection

It is now very difficult to find a construction site that does not utilise any geosynthetic products. Materials used in the manufacture of geosynthetics are primarily synthetic polymers – generally derived from the by-products of the oil industry. As a result of the finite nature of these raw materials and their associated pollution streams, there is growing pressure to use renewable resources for sustainable production. Also, the majority of geosynthetic applications are only required to perform for a short period of time, thereby leaving an alien residual in the ground for many years to come. Natural (vegetable) fibres provide a more sustainable alternative to polymeric based materials, particularly for short-term applications – termed limited-life geotextiles (LLGs). This paper presents an overview of an extensive study that has been undertaken on the development of reinforcing LLGs manufactured from renewable and biodegradable vegetable fibres for short-term applications. Initially, structural form is considered. It is shown that LLGs can have tensile strength of up to 100 kN.m-1, which is directly comparable to a mid-range geosynthetic product. The shear interaction properties of the LLGs was then compared to a number of different commercially available geotextile structures – manufactured from both natural and synthetic materials. The results demonstrate that coefficient of interaction values of around unity can be achieved with these LLGs. This is about 20–25% more shear resistance than their synthetic equivalent. The difference stemming primarily from the coarseness of the vegetable fibres themselves but also from the novel structural form. In terms of longevity, durability tests have been undertaken on the LLGs in various ground conditions. The data obtained indicate that degradation rates are sensitive to fibre type, together with the amount of water present in the soil. Coir fibre performed the best in worst deterioration environment tested. A simple basal embankment analysis is then presented to demonstrate a potential end application for the short-term reinforcing LLGs. In this analysis, it is shown that the rate at which the underlying embankment soil gains in effective stress, due to the dissipation of excess pore water pressure, could be designed to correspond to the decline in tensile strength from the degrading LLG

Atom interferometry with Bose-Einstein condensates in a double-well potential

A trapped-atom interferometer was demonstrated using gaseous Bose-Einstein condensates coherently split by deforming an optical single-well potential into a double-well potential. The relative phase between the two condensates was determined from the spatial phase of the matter wave interference pattern formed upon releasing the condensates from the separated potential wells. Coherent phase evolution was observed for condensates held separated by 13 μ\mum for up to 5 ms and was controlled by applying ac Stark shift potentials to either of the two separated condensates.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Safety, the Preface Paradox and Possible Worlds Semantics

    Get PDF
This paper contains an argument to the effect that possible worlds semantics renders semantic knowledge impossible, no matter what ontological interpretation is given to possible worlds. The essential contention made is that possible worlds semantic knowledge is unsafe and this is shown by a parallel with the preface paradox

Interference of Bose-Einstein Condensates on an Atom Chip

We have used a microfabricated atom chip to split a single Bose-Einstein condensate of sodium atoms into two spatially separated condensates. Dynamical splitting was achieved by deforming the trap along the tightly confining direction into a purely magnetic double-well potential. We observed the matter wave interference pattern formed upon releasing the condensates from the microtraps. The intrinsic features of the quartic potential at the merge point, such as zero trap frequency and extremely high field-sensitivity, caused random variations of the relative phase between the two split condensates. Moreover, the perturbation from the abrupt change of the trapping potential during the splitting was observed to induce vortices.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

Geodetic, teleseismic, and strong motion constraints on slip from recent southern Peru subduction zone earthquakes

We use seismic and geodetic data both jointly and separately to constrain coseismic slip from the 12 November 1996 M_w 7.7 and 23 June 2001 M_w 8.5 southern Peru subduction zone earthquakes, as well as two large aftershocks following the 2001 earthquake on 26 June and 7 July 2001. We use all available data in our inversions: GPS, interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) from the ERS-1, ERS-2, JERS, and RADARSAT-1 satellites, and seismic data from teleseismic and strong motion stations. Our two-dimensional slip models derived from only teleseismic body waves from South American subduction zone earthquakes with M_w > 7.5 do not reliably predict available geodetic data. In particular, we find significant differences in the distribution of slip for the 2001 earthquake from models that use only seismic (teleseismic and two strong motion stations) or geodetic (InSAR and GPS) data. The differences might be related to postseismic deformation or, more likely, the different sensitivities of the teleseismic and geodetic data to coseismic rupture properties. The earthquakes studied here follow the pattern of earthquake directivity along the coast of western South America, north of 5°S, earthquakes rupture to the north; south of about 12°S, directivity is southerly; and in between, earthquakes are bilateral. The predicted deformation at the Arequipa GPS station from the seismic-only slip model for the 7 July 2001 aftershock is not consistent with significant preseismic motion

Hybrid Atom--Photon Quantum Gate in a Superconducting Microwave Resonator

    Get PDF
We propose a novel hybrid quantum gate between an atom and a microwave photon in a superconducting coplanar waveguide cavity by exploiting the strong resonant microwave coupling between adjacent Rydberg states. Using experimentally achievable parameters gate fidelities >0.99> 0.99 are possible on sub-μ\mus timescales for waveguide temperatures below 40 mK. This provides a mechanism for generating entanglement between two disparate quantum systems and represents an important step in the creation of a hybrid quantum interface applicable for both quantum simulation and quantum information processing.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
