Characterization of frequency drift of sampled-grating DBR laser module under direct modulation
The authors demonstrate the drift in frequency of a static sampled-grating distributed Bragg reflector (SG DBR) laser module when it is subjected to direct modulation. The magnitude of drift and its settling time is characterized as a function of the index of modulation. Results show that when the directly modulated SG DBR is optically filtered, as in a dense wavelength- division- multiplexed system, a power penalty of 6.7 dB is incurred in comparison to the unfiltered case

Infrared chemical imaging through nondegenerate two-photon absorption in silicon-based cameras
Chemical imaging based on mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopic contrast is an
important technique with a myriad of applications, including biomedical imaging
and environmental monitoring. Current MIR cameras, however, lack in performance
and are much less affordable compared to mature Si-based devices, which operate
in the visible and near-infrared. Here we demonstrate fast MIR chemical imaging
through non-degenerate two-photon absorption (NTA) in a standard Si-based
charge-coupled device (CCD). We show that wide-field MIR images can be obtained
at 100 ms exposure times using picosecond pulse energies of only a few fJ per
pixel through NTA directly on the CCD chip. Because this on-chip approach does
not rely on phase-matching, it is alignment-free and does not necessitate
complex post-processing of the images. We emphasize the utility of this
technique through chemically selective MIR imaging of polymers and biological
samples, including MIR videos of moving targets, physical processes and live
nematodes
The impact of climate change on crop production in Ghana: A Structural Ricardian analysis
We apply a Structural Ricardian Model (SRM) to farm-level data from Ghana in order to estimate the impact of climate change on crop production. The SRM explicitly incorporates changes in farmers’ crop selection in response to variation in climate, a feature lacking in many existing models of climate change response in Africa. Two other novel features of our model are an estimate of the response of agricultural profits to differences in land tenure, and a comprehensive investigation of the appropriate functional form with which to model farmers’ responses. This final feature turns out to be important, since estimates of the effect of climate change turn out to be sensitive to the choice of functional form
Costs of formal and informal care at home for people with dementia: ‘expert panel’ opinions from staff and informal carers
Effective home support in dementia is key in delaying nursing home admission. However, home support is frequently not tailored to the individual needs of people with dementia. Staff allocating home support services may not identify important care needs, which only be recognised by informal carers. The purpose of this study was to explore the balance of informal and formal home support and their associated costs from the perspectives of both informal carers and paid staff. Five case vignettes of people with dementia were designed based on an existing English data set from a European study into transition into long-term care (the RightTimePlaceCare programme), representing 42 per cent of the English sample. In total, 14 informal carers and 14 paid staff were consulted in separate groups, as expert panels, regarding their recommendations for home care services for each vignette. Care recommendations of carers and staff were costed based on nationally available unit costs and compared. Informal carers allocated fewer hours of care than staff. Personal and domestic home care and day care centres were the most frequently recommended formal services by both groups, and some vignettes of people with dementia were recommended for care home admission. The ratio of costs of informal versus formal support was relatively equal for paid staff, yet unbalanced from the perspectives of informal carers with a greater proportion of formal care costs. Recommendations from this study can help shape dementia care to be more tailored to the individual needs of people with dementia and their carers
Amphidromy Links a Newly Documented Fish Community of Continental Australian Streams, to Oceanic Islands of the West Pacific
BACKGROUND: Indo-Pacific high island streams experience extreme hydrological variation, and are characterised by freshwater fish species with an amphidromous life history. Amphidromy is a likely adaptation for colonisation of island streams following stochastic events that lead to local extirpation. In the Wet Tropics of north-eastern Australia, steep coastal mountain streams share similar physical characteristics to island systems. These streams are poorly surveyed, but may provide suitable habitat for amphidromous species. However, due to their ephemeral nature, common non-diadromous freshwater species of continental Australia are unlikely to persist. Consequently, we hypothesise that coastal Wet Tropics streams are faunally more similar, to distant Pacific island communities, than to nearby faunas of large continental rivers. METHODS/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Surveys of coastal Wet Tropics streams recorded 26 species, 10 of which are first records for Australia, with three species undescribed. This fish community is unique in an Australian context in that it contains mostly amphidromous species, including sicydiine gobies of the genera Sicyopterus, Sicyopus, Smilosicyopus and Stiphodon. Species presence/absence data of coastal Wet Tropics streams were compared to both Wet Tropics river networks and Pacific island faunas. ANOSIM indicated the fish fauna of north-eastern Australian coastal streams were more similar to distant Pacific islands (R = 0.76), than to nearby continental rivers (R = 0.98). MAIN CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Coastal Wet Tropics streams are faunally more similar to distant Pacific islands (79% of species shared), than to nearby continental fauna due to two factors. First, coastal Wet Tropics streams lack many non-diadromous freshwater fish which are common in nearby large rivers. Second, many amphidromous species found in coastal Wet Tropics streams and Indo-Pacific islands remain absent from large rivers of the Wet Tropics. The evolutionary and conservation significance of this newly discovered Australian fauna requires clarification in the context of the wider amphidromous fish community of the Pacific
Zwicky Transient Facility constraints on the optical emission from the nearby repeating FRB 180916.J0158+65
The discovery rate of fast radio bursts (FRBs) is increasing dramatically
thanks to new radio facilities. Meanwhile, wide-field instruments such as the
47 deg Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) survey the optical sky to study
transient and variable sources. We present serendipitous ZTF observations of
the CHIME repeating source FRB 180916.J0158+65, that was localized to a spiral
galaxy 149 Mpc away and is the first FRB suggesting periodic modulation in its
activity. While 147 ZTF exposures corresponded to expected high-activity
periods of this FRB, no single ZTF exposure was at the same time as a CHIME
detection. No optical source was found at the FRB location in 683
ZTF exposures, totalling 5.69 hours of integration time. We combined ZTF upper
limits and expected repetitions from FRB 180916.J0158+65 in a statistical
framework using a Weibull distribution, agnostic of periodic modulation priors.
The analysis yielded a constraint on the ratio between the optical and radio
fluences of , corresponding to an optical energy erg for a fiducial 10 Jy ms FRB (90%
confidence). A deeper (but less statistically robust) constraint of can be placed assuming a rate of Jy ms)= hr and
FRB occurring during exposures taken in high-activity windows. The
constraint can be improved with shorter per-image exposures and longer
integration time, or observing FRBs at higher Galactic latitudes. This work
demonstrated how current surveys can statistically constrain multi-wavelength
counterparts to FRBs even without deliberately scheduled simultaneous radio

Associations of Plasma Phospholipid Omega-6 and Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Levels and MRI Measures of Cardiovascular Structure and Function: The Multiethnic Study of Atherosclerosis
Background. The association between plasma omega-6 fatty acids and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is unclear, and discrepancy remains concerning the cardiovascular benefit of the omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid. Methods. Associations of plasma phospholipid fatty acid levels (arachidonic acid, linoleic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and alpha-linolenic acid) with cardiac magnetic resonance imaging measures of left ventricular (LV) mass, LV volume, ejection fraction, stroke volume, and aortic distensibility were investigated in 1,274 adults. Results. Results of multivariate analysis showed no statistically significant associations of plasma omega-6 or omega-3 levels with cardiac magnetic resonance imaging measures. Stratification by gender revealed a positive association between DHA and LV mass in women (β = 1.89, P = 0.02; P interaction = 0.003) and a trend for a positive association between DHA and ejection fraction in men (β = 0.009, P = 0.05; P interaction = 0.03). Conclusion. Additional research is warranted to clarify the effects of plasma DHA on cardiac structure and function in women versus men
Processing Images from the Zwicky Transient Facility
The Zwicky Transient Facility is a new robotic-observing program, in which a
newly engineered 600-MP digital camera with a pioneeringly large field of view,
47~square degrees, will be installed into the 48-inch Samuel Oschin Telescope
at the Palomar Observatory. The camera will generate ~petabyte of raw
image data over three years of operations. In parallel related work, new
hardware and software systems are being developed to process these data in real
time and build a long-term archive for the processed products. The first public
release of archived products is planned for early 2019, which will include
processed images and astronomical-source catalogs of the northern sky in the
and bands. Source catalogs based on two different methods will be
generated for the archive: aperture photometry and point-spread-function
