This article discusses the reasons for the increased interest in the figure of Catherine II in Russian cinema of the 2010s. These films recreate the principles of gynecocracy in the period of Catherine’s reign. The analysis of TV series Catherine (2014–2016) and The Great (2015) aims to answer the question about the ideological and psychological meaning of such ‘retrohistory’ and its connection with the political concerns of the present. This study also considers these series within the cinematographic tradition of the twentieth century and the context provided by the memoirs of the eighteenth century. The conclusion is made that contemporary Russian historical cinema has lost its escapist function as well as its interest in depicting the emotional culture of the Catherinian era. Cinematic representations of the past are thus characterized by the following features: use of the past to legitimize the present; aesthetic empathy; ‘Russification’ of the German princess as a source of Russian national pride; gender self- presentation and projection of certain psychological complexes on the representation of Catherine in order to enhance the film’s appeal to the female audience. Keywords: Catherine the Great, Russian cinema, gynecocracy, retrohistory, legitimation of the present, aesthetic empathy, gender self-presentatio

Political and national-cultural aspects of the prussian myth in the context of Russia-Germany relations of the 20th century

The article was submitted on 13.04.2015.Referring to a large number of Soviet, Russian and German memoirs, fiction and journalistic texts, the author studies the main ways of formation and development of the Prussian myth that is connected with the German province of East Prussia and its people during World War II and the postwar period. The author explores the historical, national and psychological reasons that underlie the idea of Prussia and Prussians as the most vivid image of the Alien or the Enemy in Soviet people’s consciousness during the Great Patriotic War. Heavily relying on propaganda, the negative mythology of Prussia imposed that it be perceived as the den of the fascist beast, a place that generated antihuman theories and annexationist plans, and, secondly, a land that was originally Russian and then occupied by the Livonian Order. It is such ideas that formed the official state policy of the expulsion of the Prussian spirit that took place during the first three post-war decades in Kaliningrad Region. Additionally, Soviet and post-Soviet memoir or autobiographical literature (D. Shcheglov, A. Nevsky, P. Mikhin, Yu. Zhukova) formed the idea of a close connection of a number of nation-specific traits of the Germans with centuries-old Prussian militarism. This is how the Russia-Germany relations conflict was formed between Russian chaos and German cosmos, and was reflected not only in the Russian but also German egodocuments of the World War II. Among the main variations of the Prussian myth, there is one that consists in the idea of Prussia as of German Arcadia, an agricultural paradise (M. Muller, H. Rauschenbach, A. Surminski) lost as a result of the War. Another – German – variation of the Prussian myth is the idea of Prussia and its dwellers as the main loss Germany had to go through in the course of World War II. The authors of egodocuments that reflect this point of view (H. Gerlach, G. Köpp, M. Wieck) describe their lives as part of the historical tragedy of East Prussia and Germany as a whole. It is such memoirs that are most frequently used by Western European historians (M. Hastings, G. Böddeker, N. M. Naimark) to create an impression of the Soviet Army’s extremely violent behaviour in East Prussia. A third variation of the Prussian myth created by Germans may be called soteriological and depicts this eastern German land as a saviour bearing the brunt from the East and granting its inhabitants a chance to find a way out of the country and go to the West over the Baltic Sea. In these ideas formulated both by professional writers (G. Grass, E. Jünger) and memoirists (E. Tannehill, G. Nitsch) the image of the Red Army and Russians often regarded as an uncontrollable force, the personification of chaos plays an important role. At the end of the article, referring to a vast number of egodocuments written by both Russians (Ya. Terentyev, E. F. Agapov, G. A. Melikhov, A. E. Kashpur, P. Kh. Kharitonov) and Germans (R. Klaussen), the author outlines ways out of the space of war and into the space of multicultural European consciousness that includes both Germany and Russia.

The article was submitted on 21.12.2013.With reference to a vast amount of Soviet / Russian and German egodocuments, the author studies the sociocultural and national stereotypes of military behavior of fighter pilots in World War II. Examining broader aspects of fighter pilots’ subcultural psychology and using the methods of content analysis of memoirs, the author analyzes the main means of changing stereotypes in terms of mutual perceptions of former enemies. The latter did not only depend on the logic of uncompromising military confrontation and the clichés of propaganda but also on the mental code required of participants of the war, in which they were to comply with traditional behavioural ideals of valor and heroism.

Dispersion of elastic waves in laminated glass

    Get PDF
Elastic sandwich-type structures with high-contrast material and geometrical properties have numerous applications in modern engineering, including, in particular, laminated glass, photovoltaic panels, precipitator plates in gas filters, etc. Multi-parametric modelling of such structures assumes taking into consideration various types of contrast in stiffness, density and thickness. The present contribution is concerned with analysis of low-frequency dispersion of elastic waves in case of an antisymmetric motion of a three-layered symmetric plate, modelling laminated glass. The conditions on material and geometrical parameters, leading to the lowest non-zero thickness shear resonance frequency tending to zero, are formulated. In this case the dispersion relation possesses two low-frequency modes instead of a single fundamental low-frequency mode, which is typical for a homogeneous plate. A two-mode uniform asymptotic approximation is constructed, along with local approximations for the fundamental mode and the first shear harmonic

Small amplitude waves in a pre-stressed compressible elastic layer with one fixed and one free face

We address the problem of wave propagation in a pre-stressed elastic layer with mixed boundary conditions, the layer having one fixed and one free face. Numerical analysis provides a good initial insight into the influence of these boundary conditions on dispersion characteristics. In the long wave regime, there is clearly no evidence of low-frequency motion and thus an absence of any long wave fundamental mode-like features. In the short wave regime, however, the dispersion relations does show evidence of low-frequency dispersion phenomena. The first harmonic’s short wave phase speed limit is shown to be distinct from that of all other harmonics; this coincides with the associated Rayleigh surface wave speed. The short wave analysis is completed with the derivation of approximate solutions for the higher harmonics. Asymptotic long wave approximations of the dispersion relation are then obtained for motion within the vicinity of the thickness stretch and thickness shear resonance frequencies. These approximations are required to obtain the relative asymptotic orders of the displacement components for frequencies within the vicinity of either the shear or stretch resonance frequencies. This enables an analogue of the asymptotic stress-strain state to be established through asymptotic integration

The edge bending wave on a plate reinforced by a beam (L).

    Get PDF
The edge bending wave on a thin isotropic semi-infinite plate reinforced by a beam is considered within the framework of the classical plate and beam theories. The boundary conditions at the plate edge incorporate both dynamic bending and twisting of the beam. A dispersion relation is derived along with its long-wave approximation. The effect of the problem parameters on the cutoffs of the wave in question is studied asymptotically. The obtained results are compared with calculations for the reinforcement in the form of a strip plate

On low-frequency vibrations of a composite string with contrast properties for energy scavenging fabric devices

    Get PDF
Free vibrations of a two-component string with high-contrast material parameters are considered at different boundary conditions to illustrate the very low-frequency energy harvesting capability of fabric devices. It is revealed that, only for the case of mixed boundary conditions, low-frequency (locally) almost rigid-body vibrations are admissible, provided that material parameter ratios lie in some well defined interval. A low-frequency perturbation procedure is carried out to determine the eigenfrequencies as well as the eigenforms. The analysis is extended to a piecewise inhomogeneous string and to a string supported on an elastic foundation. It is shown that both situations may still admit low-frequency vibrations, under certain restrictions on the material properties. This is particularly remarkable given that the situation of elastic support normally possesses two nonzero cutoff frequencies. The results may be especially relevant for energy scavenging fabric devices, where very low-frequency (< 10 Hz) mechanical vibrations of textile fibers are harvested through friction

Dispersion of elastic waves in a strongly inhomogeneous three-layered plate

Elastic wave propagation in a three-layered plate with high-contrast mechanical and geometric properties of the layers is analysed. Four specific types of contrast arising in engineering practice, including the design of stiff and lightweight structures, laminated glass, photovoltaic panels, and electrostatic precipitators in gas filters, are considered. For all of them the cut-off frequency of the first harmonic is close to zero. Two-mode asymptotic polynomial expansions of the Rayleigh-Lamb dispersion relation approximating both the fundamental bending wave and the first harmonic, are derived. It is established that these can be either uniform or composite ones, valid only over non-overlapping vicinities of zero and the lowest cut-off frequencies. The partial differential equations of motion associated with two-mode shortened dispersion relations are also presented

    On non-locally elastic Rayleigh wave

    Get PDF
The Rayleigh-type wave solution within a widely used differential formulation in non-local elasticity is revisited. It is demonstrated that this wave solution does not satisfy the equations of motion for non-local stresses. A modified differential model taking into account a non-local boundary layer is developed. Correspondence of the latter model to the original integral theory with the kernel in the form of the zero-order modified Bessel function of the second kind is addressed. Asymptotic behaviour of the model is investigated, resulting in a leading-order non-local correction to the classical Rayleigh wave speed due to the effect of the boundary layer. The suitability of a continuous set-up for modelling boundary layers in the framework of non-local elasticity is analysed starting from a toy problem for a semi-infinite chain.
