Sheet SK 00 SW and SK 00 SE ALDRIDGE - BROWNHILLS : part of 1:50 000 Sheet 154 (Lichfield)
This report embodies some of the results of a study commissioned by the Department of the Environment in 1983 to provide a geological information base, to enable informed consideration to be given to development proposals for the Aldridge - Brownhills area. It is mainly concerned with hydrogeology, subsidence and bulk minerals resources. There is a substantial introductory section on general geology, to give the geological context of these planning-related aspects
Enhanced mapping of artificially modified ground in urban areas : using borehole, map and remotely sensed data
The report described here is focused on how using boreholes and attributes from boreholes
increased and enhanced the mapping of Artificially Modified Ground, and helped measure
landscape evolution change in the urban environment. These attributes from boreholes include
the presence of AMG in a borehole, the thickness of AMG recorded, the start height of a
borehole and the location of boreholes (and other boreholes in close proximity) with modern
topological features and geological maps
Influence of personality, age, sex, and oestrus state on chimpanzee problem-solving success
Despite the importance of individual problem solvers for group- and individual-level fitness, the correlates of individual problem-solving success are still an open topic of investigation. In addition to demographic factors, such as age or sex, certain personality dimensions have also been revealed as reliable correlates of problem-solving by animals. Such correlates, however, have been little-studied in chimpanzees. To empirically test the influence of age, sex, estrous state, and different personality factors on chimpanzee problem-solving, we individually tested 36 captive chimpanzees with two novel foraging puzzles. We included both female (N = 24) and male (N = 12) adult chimpanzees (aged 14–47 years) in our sample. We also controlled for the females’ estrous state—a potential influence on cognitive reasoning—by testing cycling females both when their sexual swelling was maximally tumescent (associated with the luteinizing hormone surge of a female’s estrous cycle) and again when it was detumescent. Although we found no correlation between the chimpanzees’ success with either puzzle and their age or sex, the chimpanzees’ personality ratings did correlate with responses to the novel foraging puzzles. Specifically, male chimpanzees that were rated highly on the factors Methodical, Openness (to experience), and Dominance spent longer interacting with the puzzles. There was also a positive relationship between the latency of females to begin interacting with the two tasks and their rating on the factor Reactivity/Undependability. No other significant correlations were found, but we report tentative evidence for increased problem-solving success by the females when they had detumescent estrous swellings

Design, Analysis, and Fabrication of Two Lightweight, High L’ Railguns
Design, analysis, and fabrication of two railguns with 90 and 30 mm bores utilizing a laminated containment structure are discussed. Laminations are insulated from each other by layers of sheet adhesive, and a composite overwrap is applied to the laminations for longitudinal stiffness. The 90 mm-bore gun is being fabricated for testing as the 9 MJ range gun. Performance specifications for the 90 mm-bore gun are 3.2 MA peak current, 4.0 km/s maximum velocity, and 12 MJ muzzle energy. The 30 mm-bore gun is a one-third scale version of the 90 mm-bore gun, built to develop construction techniques and verify performance. It is designed to be operated at 1 MA with a maximum muzzle energy of 400 kJCenter for Electromechanic
Mixed States of Composite Fermions Carrying Two and Four Vortices
There now exists preliminary experimental evidence for some fractions, such
as = 4/11 and 5/13, that do not belong to any of the sequences
, and being integers. We propose that these states
are mixed states of composite fermions of different flavors, for example,
composite fermions carrying two and four vortices. We also obtain an estimate
of the lowest-excitation dispersion curve as well as the transport gap; the
gaps for 4/11 are smaller than those for 1/3 by approximately a factor of 50.Comment: Accepted for PRB rapid communication (scheduled to appear in Nov 15,

Radiative falloff of a scalar field in a weakly curved spacetime without symmetries
We consider a massless scalar field propagating in a weakly curved spacetime
whose metric is a solution to the linearized Einstein field equations. The
spacetime is assumed to be stationary and asymptotically flat, but no other
symmetries are imposed -- the spacetime can rotate and deviate strongly from
spherical symmetry. We prove that the late-time behavior of the scalar field is
identical to what it would be in a spherically-symmetric spacetime: it decays
in time according to an inverse power-law, with a power determined by the
angular profile of the initial wave packet (Price falloff theorem). The field's
late-time dynamics is insensitive to the nonspherical aspects of the metric,
and it is governed entirely by the spacetime's total gravitational mass; other
multipole moments, and in particular the spacetime's total angular momentum, do
not enter in the description of the field's late-time behavior. This extended
formulation of Price's falloff theorem appears to be at odds with previous
studies of radiative decay in the spacetime of a Kerr black hole. We show,
however, that the contradiction is only apparent, and that it is largely an
artifact of the Boyer-Lindquist coordinates adopted in these studies.Comment: 17 pages, RevTeX
The Intentional Use of Service Recovery Strategies to Influence Consumer Emotion, Cognition and Behaviour
Service recovery strategies have been identified as a critical factor in the success of. service organizations. This study develops a conceptual frame work to investigate how specific service recovery strategies influence the emotional, cognitive and negative behavioural responses of . consumers., as well as how emotion and cognition influence negative behavior. Understanding the impact of specific service recovery strategies will allow service providers' to more deliberately and intentionally engage in strategies that result in positive organizational outcomes. This study was conducted using a 2 x 2 between-subjects quasi-experimental design. The results suggest that service recovery has a significant impact on emotion, cognition and negative behavior. Similarly, satisfaction, negative emotion and positive emotion all influence negative behavior but distributive justice has no effect

‘The Coaching Needs of High Performance Female Athletes within the Coach-Athlete Dyad’
Within the research literature there is little work that has examined how coaches (and coaching) can positively influence female athletes’ continued participation and development in performance sport. With this in mind, utilising a grounded theory approach, this study focused on what are the coaching preferences of female athletes within the elite coachathlete dyad. Through interviews with 27 current high performance female athletes, four major coaching needs were found. These were: to be supported as person as well a performer, coaching to be a joint endeavour, the need for positive communication and finally, recognition of the salience of gender within the coach-athlete dyad. The findings provide evidence that the relational expertise of coaches is at the forefront of these women’s coaching needs. This study also demonstrates that for the participants, the coach-athlete relationship is at the heart of improving athletic training and performance, and that gender is an important influence on this relationship. Furthermore, the research highlights the strength of using an interpretive-qualitative paradigmatic approach to athlete preferences through foregrounding the women’s voices and experiences
