    Nonlinear Control for Dual Quaternion Systems

    The motion of rigid bodies includes three degrees of freedom (DOF) for rotation, generally referred to as roll, pitch and yaw, and 3 DOF for translation, generally described as motion along the x, y and z axis, for a total of 6 DOF. Many complex mechanical systems exhibit this type of motion, with constraints, such as complex humanoid robotic systems, multiple ground vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), multiple spacecraft vehicles, and even quantum mechanical systems. These motions historically have been analyzed independently, with separate control algorithms being developed for rotation and translation. The goal of this research is to study the full 6 DOF of rigid body motion together, developing control algorithms that will affect both rotation and translation simultaneously. This will prove especially beneficial in complex systems in the aerospace and robotics area where translational motion and rotational motion are highly coupled, such as when spacecraft have body fixed thrusters. A novel mathematical system known as dual quaternions provide an efficient method for mathematically modeling rigid body transformations, expressing both rotation and translation. Dual quaternions can be viewed as a representation of the special Euclidean group SE (3). An eight dimensional representation of screw theory (combining dual numbers with traditional quaternions), dual quaternions allow for the development of control techniques for 6 DOF motion simultaneously. In this work variable structure nonlinear control methods are developed for dual quaternion systems. These techniques include use of sliding mode control. In particular, sliding mode methods are developed for use in dual quaternion systems with unknown control direction. This method, referred to as self-reconfigurable control, is based on the creation of multiple equilibrium surfaces for the system in the extended state space. Also in this work, the control problem for a class of driftless nonlinear systems is addressed via coordinate transformation. It is shown that driftless nonlinear systems that do not meet Brockett\u27s conditions for coordinate transformation can be augmented such that they can be transformed into the Brockett\u27s canonical form, which is nonholonomic. It is also shown that the kinematics for quaternion systems can be represented by a nonholonomic integrator. Then, a discontinuous controller designed for nonholonomic systems is applied. Examples of various applications for dual quaternion systems are given including spacecraft attitude and position control and robotics

    Modeling the maximum charge state of arginine-containing peptide ions formed by electrospray ionization

    A model for the gas-phase proton transfer reactivity of multiply protonated molecules is used to quantitatively account for the maximum charge states of a series of arginine-contain- ing peptide ions measured by Downard and Biemann (Int. J. Mass Spectrom. Ion Processes 1995, 148, 191–202). We find that our calculations account exactly for the maximum charge state for 7 of the 10 peprides and are off by one charge for the remaining 3. These calculations clearly predict the trend in maximum charge states for these peptides and provide further evidence that the maximum charge state of ions formed by electrospray ionization is determined by their gas-phase proton transfer reactivity.     MULTIVARIATE STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF TERRESTRIAL INVERTEBRATE INDEX OF BIOTIC INTEGRITY

    The Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) is designed to measure the changes in ecological and environmental conditions as affected by human disturbances. In practice, the IBI is used in various ecological applications to detect divergence in biological integrity attributable to human actions. Last year during this conference, methodologies for developing an Avian Index of Biotic Integrity (A-IBI) were presented and discussed. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the construction and statistical evaluation of a multi-metric terrestrial Invertebrate Index of Biotic Integrity (I-IBI) using the same multivariate statistical techniques. Canonical correlation analyses were utilized to select pertinent invertebrate metrics as impacted by vegetation and hydrology variables. The resulting invertebrate metrics were then ranked, according to a pre-specified scale of human disturbance, and the I-IBI scores were subsequently computed. The multivariate model, as well as the final I-IBI scores were statistically validated using independent temporal data sets. Furthermore, the sensitivity of I-IBI values was determined in order to access their reliability. The techniques are demonstrated using five years of invertebrate survey data collected from the terrestrial environments within the historic fifty-year floodplain of the Kootenai River in Northern Idaho

    Impact of humic acid fouling on membrane performance and transport of pharmaceutically active compounds in forward osmosis

    The impact of humic acid fouling on the membrane transport of two pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) - namely carbamazepine and sulfamethoxazole - in forward osmosis (FO) was investigated. Deposition of humic acid onto the membrane surface was promoted by the complexation with calcium ions in the feed solution and the increase in ionic strength at the membrane surface due to the reverse transport of NaCl draw solute. The increase in the humic acid deposition on the membrane surface led to a substantial decrease in the membrane salt (NaCl) permeability coefficient but did not result in a significant decrease in the membrane pure water permeability coefficient. As the deposition of humic acid increased, the permeation of carbamazepine and sulfamethoxazole decreased, which correlated well with the decrease in the membrane salt (NaCl) permeability coefficient. It is hypothesized that the hydrated humic acid fouling layer hindered solute diffusion through the membrane pore and enhanced solute rejection by steric hindrance, but not the permeation of water molecules. The membrane water and salt (NaCl) permeability coefficients were fully restored by physical cleaning of the membrane, suggesting that humic acid did not penetrate into the membrane pores

Implementing construction innovation often involves experimentation, iteration and refinement of activities that are reliant on volatile information. Although several decision support models have been developed to assess new technologies, innovation as an implementation process has received less attention. This paper presents several tools to assess the value of technological innovation. It also presents a conceptual model, which is currently being developed, that deals with the effectiveness of innovation implementation phase. The proposed model is a decision support tool that models different implementation scenarios. The model uses influence information, managerial and technological benefits to control the implementation phase

    Water extraction from mixed liquor of an aerobic bioreactor by forward osmosis: membrane fouling and biomass characteristics assessment

    This study investigated membrane fouling and biomass characteristics during water extraction from mixed liquor of an aerobic bioreactor by a submerged forward osmosis (FO) system. As the sludge concentration in the reactor increased from 0 to 20 g/L, fouling of the FO membrane increased but was much less severe than that of a reference microfiltration membrane. The results also indicate that aeration can be used to effectively control membrane fouling. By increasing the draw solute concentration, as expected, the initial water flux was increased. However, there appears to be a critical water flux above which severe membrane fouling was encountered. A short-term osmotic membrane bioreactor experiment showed build-up of salinity in the bioreactor due to the reverse draw solute transport and inorganic salts rejection by the FO membrane. Salinity build-up in the bioreactor reduced the permeate flux and sludge production, and at the same time, altered the biomass characteristics, leading to more soluble microbial products and less extracellular polymeric substances in the microbial mass. Additionally, the inhibitory effects of the increased salinity on biomass and the high rejection capacity of FO led to the build-up of ammonia and ortho-phosphate in the bioreactor

    The valuation of European financial firms

    We extend the recent literature concerning accounting based valuation models to investigate financial firms from six European countries with substantial financial sectors: France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland and the UK. Not only are these crucial industries worthy of study in their own right, but unusual accounting practices, and inter-country differences in those accounting practices, provide valuable insights into the accounting-value relationship. Our sample consists of 7,714 financial firm/years observations from 1,140 companies drawn from 1989-2000. Sub-samples include 1,309 firm/years for banks, 650 for insurance companies, 1,705 for real estate firms, and 3,239 for investment companies. In most countries we find that the valuation models work as well or better in explaining cross-sectional variations in the market-to-book ratio for financial firms as they do for industrial and commercial firms in the same countries, although Switzerland is an exception to this generalization. As expected, the results are sensitive to industrial differences, accounting regulation and accounting practices. In particular, marking assets to market value reduces the relevance of earnings figures and increases that of equity

    BOOTSTRAP ESTIMATION AND COMPARISON OF AN INDEX OF PHYLOGENETIC CORRELATION

    A common objective of bioinformatic analyses is to assess the similarity of species, given a biological trait or characteristic. Phylogenetic correlation is one means to achieve this objective. Such measures provide a means to evaluate evolutionary models and history as well as having potential application to ecological relationships including host preference selection. Typically, these measurements are based on the deviation of an observed phylogeny from a Brownian evolutionary model. Statistical inference for this difference is assessed through likelihood ratio tests. These tests, in turn, rely on the assumption of a Normal likelihood within the phylogenetic trait. In addition, statistical comparison of estimated phylogenetic correlations between competing phylogenies or traits has not been addressed. In this paper, a bootstrap resampling methodology is proposed for two common phylogenetic correlation metrics, Pagel’s λ and Blomberg’s K. The underlying bootstrap distribution of the estimates will be utilized as a means of computing confidence limits as well as carrying out hypothesis testing. The method will be demonstrated using phylogenetic and metabolomic data related to the host specificity of an insect, Ceutorhynchus cardariae Korotyaev, on a wide range of Brassicaceae species
