The delivery of technology content in one-year initial teacher education partnership schemes

This paper describes a model for the delivery of Technology subject content in the new teacher education partnership arrangement starting in 1993. It is based upon the scheme initially tried with articled teachers and which has now been further developed. The University of Manchester model of initial teacher education is based on the principle of empowerment of the classroom, laboratory and workshop teachers in the mentor role, rather than the use of a top-down model in which the school senior management pass the training through the hierarchical structure to the student. The simple subdivision of the work of the higher education institutions and the schools into theory and practice has been shown to be unsatisfactory. It is shown how the two partners in the scheme can jointly improve the quality of the teacher education provided for the students by allowing the students to be the auditors of their own progress; it is shown how individualisation of the students' programmes can be very effective in optimum use of their time and in reducing unnecessary repetition

Building Principle-Based Strategic Learning: Insights From Practice

Strategic learning is a powerful tool for foundations to achieve greater impact, yet foundations have struggled to create practices and behaviors that effectively support them in learning about strategy. Given that many foundations are engaged in strategic philanthropy, where they have specific conditions in the world they are trying to change, it is critical that they have the capacity to effectively learn about and improve their strategies. This article offers three principles for strategic learning, informed by the field of strategic learning and insights from practice across three foundations. Each principle is explored in terms of what it means and why it is important, along with examples from how it could look in practice. By taking a principle-focused approach to strategic learning, this article offers a base from which to build a rigorous practice of strategic learning in any organization and to tailor the specifics of that practice to the organization’s unique context and culture

PROD-ALERT: Psychiatric restraint open data—analysis using logarithmic estimates on reporting trends

Aims and Methods: Restraint reporting varies, which undermines regulation, obfuscates analyses, and incentivises minimisation. The English Mental Health Units Use of Force Act 2018, “Seni's Law” mandates reporting. This paper analysed open data from all psychiatric and learning disability institutions in England from September 2020 to August 2021. We correlated logarithms of “people restrained per month”, against “bed days” per month and “people under legal mental health detention” per month, per institution. We designated institutions reporting some restraint for at least 11 of 12 months as reporting “completely” and used their trend to infer rates from non-“complete” institutions. Allowance was made for size. Our a priori manual can be shared on request. Results: Logarithms of people restrained per month and bed-days per month correlated among complete reporters: R2 0.90 (2.s.f). Persons detained per month also correlated with restraint: R2 0.78. “Partial” institutions reported intermittently. “Joiner” institutions reported firstly null, then substantive reporting. “Null” institutions (including the largest) reported no restraint. Precisely-reporting institutions with high inverse variance between months reported similar restraint-rates but less-precise reported lower rates. In institutions reporting no restraint, two independent “true rate” estimations, by bed-days or people detained, correlated across institutions: R2 0.95. Inference from size suggested non-complete reporters restrained 1,774 people in England per month 95% CI (1,449–2,174). Clinical implications: Restraint remains under-reported. Institutional size explains most restraint variation among complete reporting institutions, 90% of R2. Institutional restraint reports can be compared per-bed per-month. Rates of people detained are a useful independent “checking” comparator in England

Adam Smith and the theory of punishment

A distinctive theory of punishment plays a central role in Smith's moral and legal theory. According to this theory, we regard the punishment of a crime as deserved only to the extent that an impartial spectator would go along with the actual or supposed resentment of the victim. The first part of this paper argues that Smith's theory deserves serious consideration and relates it to other theories such as utilitarianism and more orthodox forms of retributivism. The second part considers the objection that, because Smith's theory implies that punishment is justified only when there is some person or persons who is the victim of the crime, it cannot explain the many cases where punishment is imposed purely for the public good. It is argued that Smith's theory could be extended to cover such cases. The third part defends Smith's theory against the objection that, because it relies on our natural feelings, it cannot provide an adequate moral justification of punishment

Are 3C249.1 and 3C334 restarted quasars?

This Research Note follows up a Letter in which I posit that J1211+743 is a restarted radio source. This means that its structure, where the jet points to the relic lobe, is only apparently paradoxical. Here, I propose the same scenario and apply the same mathematical model to 3C249.1 and 3C334. The ultimate result of my investigation is that these two well-known radio-loud quasars can be understood best so far if it was assumed that they, too, had been restarted.Comment: 4 pages, accepted for publication in A&A as a Research Not

Starting a Laparoscopic Surgery Programme in the Second Largest Teaching Hospital in Ghana

Background: Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) is the second  largest hospital in Ghana. Two years have elapsed after performance of the first laparoscopic cholecystectomy.Objectives: To examine our experience and lessons learned.Design: Retrospective review.Setting: Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). Subjects: We reviewed leadership support, the role of a surgeon champion, training of physician and OR staff, influence of surgeons from outside Ghana and equipment status. The results of laparoscopic cholecystectomies performed from 2010-2012 were compared with information available from open cholecystectomies over the same period.Results: Evidence of leadership support included equipment purchase and invitation of outside experts yearly from 2008. A KATH surgeon champion was identified in 2010. A dedicated OR team received training and exhibited excellent ownership of equipment preparation. Since 2010, 25 laparoscopic cholecystectomies have been performed, 17 independently by a single surgeon. Average operative time was 1.41 hours and length of stay (LOS) 1.5 days. Conversion rate was 4.0%(1/25). Complication rate was 20.0%(5/25), none involving haemorrhage or injuries to bile ducts or bowel. Median patient satisfaction score was 5 on a scale of 1-5 where 5 is most satisfied. Complication rates and hospital stay were lower than for open cholecystectomy (20.0%vs34.5%, p>0.05 and 1.5days vs 6.6days, p<0.001 respectively). Operative times were on average 27min onger for laparoscopic cholecystectomy (p<0.01).Conclusion: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy at KATH has become a reality with less complications rates, shorter LOS, and trends towards improved patient satisfaction. Expanding laparoscopic surgery in Ghana requires its inclusion into residency training programmes and public education about its benefits for both patients and physicians

Properties of the Compact HII Region Complex G-0.02-0.07

We present new extinction maps and high-resolution Paschen alpha images of G-0.02-0.07, a complex of compact HII regions located adjacent to the M-0.02-0.07 giant molecular cloud, 6 parsecs in projection from the center of the Galaxy. These HII regions, which lie in projection just outside the boundary of the Sgr A East supernova remnant, represent one of the most recent episodes of star formation in the central parsecs of the Galaxy. The 1.87 micron extinctions of regions A, B and C are almost identical, approximately 1.5 magnitudes. Region D, in contrast, has a peak 1.87 micron extinction of 2.3 magnitudes. Adopting the Nishiyama et al. (2008) extinction law, we find these extinctions correspond to visual extinctions of A_V = 44.5 and A_V = 70, respectively. The similar and uniform extinctions of regions A, B and C are consistent with that expected for foreground extinction in the direction of the Galactic center, suggesting that they lie at the front side of the M-0.02-0.07 molecular cloud. Region D is more compact, has a higher extinction and is thus suspected to be younger and embedded in a dense core in a compressed ridge on the western edge of this cloud.Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, submitted to ApJ, comments welcom
