Grid service orchestration using the Business Process Execution Language (BPEL)
Modern scientific applications often need to be distributed across grids. Increasingly
applications rely on services, such as job submission, data transfer or data
portal services. We refer to such services as grid services. While the invocation
of grid services could be hard coded in theory, scientific users want to orchestrate
service invocations more flexibly. In enterprise applications, the orchestration of
web services is achieved using emerging orchestration standards, most notably
the Business Process Execution Language (BPEL). We describe our experience
in orchestrating scientific workflows using BPEL. We have gained this experience
during an extensive case study that orchestrates grid services for the automation of
a polymorph prediction application
Phenolic cutter for machining foam insulation
Pre-pregged fiber glass is an efficient abrasive for machining polystyrene and polyurethane foams. It bonds easily to any cutter base made of aluminum, steel, or phenolic, is inexpensive, and is readily available

An experiment to measure the energy spectrum of cosmic ray antiprotons from 100 to 1000 MeV
Production models were developed and the confirmation of each one had significant astrophysical impact. These include radical modifications of propagation models, cosmic ray antiprotons injection from neighboring domains of antimatter, p production by evaporating primordial black holes, and cosmic ray p's as annihilation products of supersymmetry particles that might make up the dark dynamical mass of the Galaxy. It is that p's originating from supersymmetric parents might have distinct spectral features that would survive solar modulation; in one model, higgsino annihilation proceeds through the bb quark-antiquark channel, producing a spectral bump at approx. 0.3 GeV in the p spectrum
Design of a large span-distributed load flying-wing cargo airplane with laminar flow control
A design study was conducted to add laminar flow control to a previously design span-distributed load airplane while maintaining constant range and payload. With laminar flow control applied to 100 percent of the wing and vertical tail chords, the empty weight increased by 4.2 percent, the drag decreased by 27.4 percent, the required engine thrust decreased by 14.8 percent, and the fuel consumption decreased by 21.8 percent. When laminar flow control was applied to a lesser extent of the chord (approximately 80 percent), the empty weight increased by 3.4 percent, the drag decreased by 20.0 percent, the required engine thrust decreased by 13.0 percent, and the fuel consumption decreased by 16.2 percent. In both cases the required take-off gross weight of the aircraft was less than the original turbulent aircraft
DNA amplified fingerprinting, a useful tool for determination of genetic origin and diversity analysis in Citrus
We used three short repetitive nucleotide sequences [(GTG)5, (TAC)5, and (GACA)4] either as radiolabeled probes for hybridization with restricted Citrus DNA or as single primers in polymerase chain reaction amplification experiments with total genomic DNA. We tested the ability of the sequences to discriminate between seedlings of zygotic or nuclear origin in the progeny of a Volkamer lemon #Citrus volkameriana# Ten. & Pasq.) tree. The genetic variability within two species [#Citrus sinensis# (L.) Osbeck (sweet oranges) and #Citrus reticulata# Blanco and relatives (mandarins)] was evaluated. DNA amplified figerprinting with single primers was the more successful technique for discriminating between nucellular and zygotic seedlings. Although we were not able to distinguish among 10 cultivars of #C. sinensis#, all 10 #C. reticulata# cultivars tested were distinguishable. However, it still is difficult to identify the putative parents of a hybrid plant when the two parental genomes are closely related. (Résumé d'auteur
