A Versatile tool? Applying the Cross-national Error Source Typology (CNEST) to triangulated pre-test data
There are certain error sources that are unique to cross-national questionnaires, or occur less frequently in single nation studies. Tools that help to identify these errors and separate them from measurement errors that only occur in single nation studies assist the cross-national survey researcher in producing a higher quality source questionnaire. In turn, this supports translators in producing functionally equivalent translations that work well in the target languages and cultures. The Cross-national Error Source Typology (CNEST) was developed as a tool for improving the effectiveness of cross-national questionnaire design and has already proved useful when applied to cognitive interview data. This paper assesses the consistency and versatility of the tool by applying it to triangulated cross-national pre-test data collected in Russia and the UK as part of the development of questions for the European Social Survey (ESS). The benefits and challenges of triangulating pre-test data in a cross-national setting are also highlighted and discussed

Searching For Evidence of Acculturation: Attitudes Toward Homosexuality Among Migrants Moving From Eastern to Western Europe
Attitudes toward gay men and lesbians are generally more tolerant in Western than in Eastern Europe. This study uses data from the first five rounds of the European Social Survey to examine acculturation among migrants moving from Eastern Europe to Western Europe, in terms of attitudes toward gay men and lesbians. After controlling for background factors associated with attitudes toward homosexuality, we find evidence of acculturation, whereby attitudes become more tolerantâand more typical of those prevalent in Western Europeâwith longer residency in this region. This study builds on existing research into cross-national differences in attitudes toward homosexuality and extends the existing North American literature on acculturation to a European context
Fast atomic transport without vibrational heating
We use the dynamical invariants associated with the Hamiltonian of an atom in
a one dimensional moving trap to inverse engineer the trap motion and perform
fast atomic transport without final vibrational heating. The atom is driven
non-adiabatically through a shortcut to the result of adiabatic, slow trap
motion. For harmonic potentials this only requires designing appropriate trap
trajectories, whereas perfect transport in anharmonic traps may be achieved by
applying an extra field to compensate the forces in the rest frame of the trap.
The results can be extended to atom stopping or launching. The limitations due
to geometrical constraints, energies and accelerations involved are analyzed,
as well as the relation to previous approaches (based on classical trajectories
or "fast-forward" and "bang-bang" methods) which can be integrated in the

Ultra-low noise microwave generation with fiber-based optical frequency comb and application to atomic fountain clock
We demonstrate the use of a fiber-based femtosecond laser locked onto an
ultra-stable optical cavity to generate a low-noise microwave reference signal.
Comparison with both a liquid Helium cryogenic sapphire oscillator (CSO) and a
Ti:Sapphire-based optical frequency comb system exhibit a stability about
between 1 s and 10 s. The microwave signal from the fiber
system is used to perform Ramsey spectroscopy in a state-of-the-art Cesium
fountain clock. The resulting clock system is compared to the CSO and exhibits
a stability of . Our continuously operated
fiber-based system therefore demonstrates its potential to replace the CSO for
atomic clocks with high stability in both the optical and microwave domain,

Time varying in N=8 extended Supergravity
There has been some evidence that the fine structure "constant" may
vary with time. We point out that this variation can be described by a scalar
field in some supergravity theory in our toy model, for instance, the N=8

Measuring and Correcting Wind-Induced Pointing Errors of the Green Bank Telescope Using an Optical Quadrant Detector
Wind-induced pointing errors are a serious concern for large-aperture
high-frequency radio telescopes. In this paper, we describe the implementation
of an optical quadrant detector instrument that can detect and provide a
correction signal for wind-induced pointing errors on the 100m diameter Green
Bank Telescope (GBT). The instrument was calibrated using a combination of
astronomical measurements and metrology. We find that the main wind-induced
pointing errors on time scales of minutes are caused by the feedarm being blown
along the direction of the wind vector. We also find that wind-induced
structural excitation is virtually non-existent. We have implemented offline
software to apply pointing corrections to the data from imaging instruments
such as the MUSTANG 3.3 mm bolometer array, which can recover ~70% of
sensitivity lost due to wind-induced pointing errors. We have also performed
preliminary tests that show great promise for correcting these pointing errors
in real-time using the telescope's subreflector servo system in combination

Towards a sensitive search for variation of the fine structure constant using radio-frequency E1 transitions in atomic dysprosium
It has been proposed that the radio-frequency electric-dipole (E1) transition
between two nearly degenerate opposite-parity states in atomic dysprosium
should be highly sensitive to possible temporal variation of the fine structure
constant () [V. A. Dzuba, V. V. Flambaum, and J. K. Webb, Phys. Rev. A
{\bf 59}, 230 (1999)]. We analyze here an experimental realization of the
proposed search in progress in our laboratory, which involves monitoring the E1
transition frequency over a period of time using direct frequency counting
techniques. We estimate that a statistical sensitivity of |\adota| \sim
10^{-18}/yr may be achieved and discuss possible systematic effects that may

Constraints on the Variation of the Fine Structure Constant from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis
We put bounds on the variation of the value of the fine structure constant
, at the time of Big Bang nucleosynthesis. We study carefully all light
elements up to Li. We correct a previous upper limit on estimated from He primordial abundance and we find interesting new
potential limits (depending on the value of the baryon-to-photon ratio) from
Li, whose production is governed to a large extent by Coulomb barriers. The
presently unclear observational situation concerning the primordial abundances
preclude a better limit than |\Delta \alpha/\alpha| \lsim 2\cdot 10^{-2}, two
orders of magnitude less restrictive than previous bounds. In fact, each of the
(mutually exclusive) scenarios of standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis proposed,
one based on a high value of the measured deuterium primordial abundance and
one based on a low value, may describe some aspects of data better if a change

National Surveillance of Home-Based HIV Testing Among Australian Gay and Bisexual Men, 2018â2020: Uptake After Commercial Availability of HIV Self-Tests
HIV self-testing allows people to collect samples and test themselves at home, addressing known barriers to facility-based testing. We aimed to measure the uptake of home HIV testing among Australian gay and bisexual men (GBM). Using national cross-sectional data from the Australian Gay Community Periodic Surveys, we assessed trends in home HIV testing among non-HIV positive GBM between 2018 and 2020. Overall, the use of home HIV testing was low, but slightly increased during 2018â2020 (from 0.3 to 0.8%, RR = 1.54, 95%CI = 1.23â1.92, p-trend < 0.001). Testing at home was more likely among non-HIV-positive GBM who were born overseas and recently arrived in Australia, at higher risk of HIV, and infrequent HIV testers. Given the greater use of home testing by men at higher risk of HIV, recent migrants and infrequent testers, all priority groups in Australiaâs HIV epidemic, we recommend increasing access to HIV self-testing to enhance uptake in these and other groups of GBM
The Entrainment-Limited Evolution of FR II Sources: Maximum Sizes and A Possible Connection to FR Is
We construct a simple theoretical model to investigate how entrainment
gradually erodes high-speed FR II jets. This process is described by embedding
a mixing-layer model developed originally to describe FR I objects in a
self-similar model for the lobe structure of classical FR II sources. Following
the classical FR II models, we assume that the lobe is dominated by the
particles injected from the central jet. The entrainment produces a boundary
shear layer which acts at the interface between the dense central jet and the
less denser surrounding lobe, and the associated erosion of the jet places
interesting limits on the maximum size of FR II sources. The model shows that
this limit depends mainly on the initial bulk velocity of the relativistic jet
triggered. The bulk velocities of FR IIs suggested by our model are in good
agreement with that obtained from direct pc-scale observations on ordinary
radio galaxies and quasars. Finally, we discuss how FR IIs may evolve into FR
