Mujeres en «The Wire»
In this paper we analyze the representation of women on the popular television show The Wire. We discuss how, while writers attempt to portray race, crime, and inner-city life with sociological accuracy, characterizations of women, and of violence against women, are not especially complex or realistic. In particular, the crime of rape is underrepresented. While the show does feature certain competent, successful professional women, overall the portrayal of underclass women differs significantly from that of underclass men, featuring far fewer sympathetic female characters and demonizing several. In these ways the show succumbs to the sexist, patriarchal norms that characterize much of the representation of women in popular entertainment products. Some posit that this asymmetry of gender representation results from the male-oriented street experience of the show’s male writers. Structural signatures of the unjamming transition at zero temperature
We study the pair correlation function for zero-temperature,
disordered, soft-sphere packings just above the onset of jamming. We find
distinct signatures of the transition in both the first and split second peaks
of this function. As the transition is approached from the jammed side (at
higher packing fraction) the first peak diverges and narrows on the small-
side to a delta-function. On the high- side of this peak, decays as a
power-law. In the split second peak, the two subpeaks are both singular at the
transition, with power-law behavior on their low- sides and step-function
drop-offs on their high- sides. These singularities at the transition are
reminiscent of empirical criteria that have previously been used to distinguish
glassy structures from liquid ones.Comment: 8 pages, 13 figure
Quantum teleportation of electrons in quantum wires with surface acoustic waves
We propose and numerically simulate a semiconductor device based on coupled
quantum wires, suitable for deterministic quantum teleportation of electrons
trapped in the minima of surface acoustic waves. We exploit a network of
interacting semiconductor quantum wires able to provide the universal set of
gates for quantum information processing, with the qubit defined by the
localization of a single electron in one of two coupled channels. The numerical
approach is based on a time-dependent solution of the three-particle
Schr\"odinger equation. First, a maximally entangled pair of electrons is
obtained via Coulomb interaction between carriers in different channels. Then,
a complete Bell-state measurement involving one electron from this pair and a
third electron is performed. Finally, the teleported state is reconstructed by
means of local one-qubit operations. The large estimated fidelity explicitely
suggests that an efficient teleportation process could be reached in an
experimental setup.Comment: 7 pages,4 figures, 1 tabl

Negotiation Theories Engage Hybrid Warfare
So how do we know hybrid warfare when we see it? And do negotiation theories, concepts and skills have any applicability to addressing the phenomenon of hybrid warfare? Our intent in this Article is to respond to those questions and then to do a bit of reframing to begin to explore negotiation theories, concepts and skills that might help us deter or respond to hybrid warfare. In the process, and as we will explain, we will reframe our focus—from responding to hybrid “warfare” to engaging in hybrid “conflict management.”
We also will do a bit of reframing regarding the sorts of negotiation theories, concepts and skills that are potentially relevant in this context. We will begin with negotiation theories that assume one-on-one or bilateral relations, and, although we will demonstrate that these theories and their underlying concepts are foundational, we also will point out why they are not sufficient in the multilateral context of hybrid warfare. Rather, we will urge that international diplomacy and multiparty negotiation theories and skills, as well as the more recent scholarship that has developed regarding hostage negotiation and “wicked problems,” are likely to be most relevant
How Do We Intervene in the Stubborn Persistence of Patriachy in Communication Scholarship?
This paper analyzes the continued propensity of men to cite other men, and more importantly, to NOT cite the work of women, in Communication Studies. After documenting the continued and troubling persistence of the erasure of women's scholarship, the paper argues for intervening at the points at which the field reproduces itself
Orbifold resolutions with general profile
A very general class of resolved versions of the C/Z_N, T^2/Z_N and S^1/Z_2
orbifolds is considered and the free theory of 6D chiral fermions studied on
it. As the orbifold limit is taken, localized 4D chiral massless fermions are
seen to arise at the fixed points. Their number, location and chirality is
found to be independent on the detailed profile of the resolving space and to
agree with the result of hep-th/0409229, in which a particular resolution was
employed. As a consistency check of the resolution procedure, the massive
equation is numerically studied. In particular, for S^1/Z_2, the "resolved"
mass--spectrum and wave functions in the internal space are seen to correctly
reproduce the usual orbifold ones, as the orbifold limit is taken.Comment: 28 pages, 3 figures, typos corrected, references adde
Negotiation Theories Engage Hybrid Warfare
The concept of hybrid warfare has arisen recently to describe the efforts, short of outright war, used by nations to disrupt and destabilize each other. This Article reviews available negotiation theories, concepts and skills to determine whether they can help governmental actors and business organizations targeted by hybrid warfare respond effectively. In other words, can negotiation theories, concepts and skills be used to engage effectively in “hybrid conflict management”? The Article urges that international diplomacy and multiparty negotiation theories and skills, as well as the more recent scholarship that has developed regarding hostage negotiation and “wicked problems,” are likely to be most relevant. The Article concludes with specific recommendations for business targets and governmental actors
Excess Vibrational Modes and the Boson Peak in Model Glasses
The excess low-frequency normal modes for two widely-used models of glasses
were studied at zero temperature. The onset frequencies for the anomalous modes
for both systems agree well with predictions of a variational argument, which
is based on analyzing the vibrational energy originating from the excess
contacts per particle over the minimum number needed for mechanical stability.
Even though both glasses studied have a high coordination number, most of the
additional contacts can be considered to be weak.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letter
