Necrophagous invertebrates of the Admiralty Bay of King George Island (South Shetland Islands, Antarctica)

Paper received 15 June 1985.In 1977 and 1980 rich materials of necrophagous invertebrates were collected in the Admiralty Bay of King George Island. The collecting was carried out in 9 stations differing with respect to their habitat conditions. The stations were established at depths ranging from 5 to 90 m. In baited traps placed in the stations 295074 specimens of various animals belonging to almost 100 taxa were caught. It was found that 23 species out of the above mentioned taxa were necrophagous, and 10 further species were suspected of necrophagy. On the basis of their specific composition and domination structure the summer and winter assemblages of necrophagous invertebrates were described and compared with each other. An analysis of spatial and seasonal changes in the structure and abundance of these assemblages was carried out. and the habitat preferences of particular species as well as a list of species displaying permanent or seasonal necrophagy were determinted. Three forms of the competitive community of necrophagous invertebrates were distinguished. The present investigations were supported by the Polish Academy of Sciences as a part of the Projects MR —II I6A and MR I 29A, and they were carried out during the I-st (I976-78) and IV—th (1979—80) Polish Antarctic Expeditions to the "Arctowski" Station

COREST: A FORTRAN computer program to analyze paralinear oxidation behavior and its application to chromic oxide forming alloys

    Get PDF
A FORTRAN computer program (COREST) was developed to analyze the high-temperature paralinear oxidation behavior of metals. It is based on a mass-balance approach and uses typical gravimetric input data. COREST was applied to predominantly Cr2O3-forming alloys tested isothermally for long times. These alloys behaved paralinearly above 1100 C as a result of simultaneous scale formation and scale vaporization. Output includes the pertinent formation and vaporization constants and kinetic values of interest. COREST also estimates specific sample weight and specific scale weight as a function of time. Most importantly, from a corrosion standpoint, it estimates specific metal loss

Computer program for flat sector thrust bearing performance

    Get PDF
A versatile computer program is presented which achieves a rapid, numerical solution of the Reynolds equation for a flat sector thrust pad bearing with either compressible or liquid lubricants. Program input includes a range in values of the geometric and operating parameters of the sector bearing. Performance characteristics are obtained from the calculated bearing pressure distribution. These are the load capacity, center of pressure coordinates, frictional energy dissipation, and flow rates of liquid lubricant across the bearing edges. Two sample problems are described

The Makings of a Peer: Evidence on Within-Classroom Heterogeneities in Peer Effects

    Get PDF
This dissertation consists of three essays on peer effects in elementary school classrooms using data from New York City (NYC) public schools. Each chapter explores a different component of within-classroom interactions in order to build towards an understanding of what makes a peer relevant. The first chapter proxies for the social network using a set of shared characteristics (homophily). In this coauthored work, we are not interested in measuring the classroom peer effect, but rather we estimate and then rank each network\u27s effect on academic spillovers. This answers the question: which characteristics are socially important, and by how much? The second chapter uses a novel method to measure the social importance of classmates based on student proximity in the lunch line over the course of the school year. The result is a revealed friendship network which I use to estimate peer effects. To my knowledge, this is the first paper to measure the social importance of classmates and use this to estimate classroom peer effects. In the third chapter, I use reduced form models to test for the existence of obesity spillovers in elementary school classrooms. I find evidence of significant causal social effects in both BMI and exposure to overweight and obese students

The principal\u27s role in promoting standards-based professional development

The purpose of this study was to describe principals\u27 and teachers\u27 knowledge of recommended professional development practice as defined by The National Staff Development Council (2001). In addition, the study described teachers\u27 and principals\u27 perceptions of professional development practices in their schools; This study was guided by three research questions: (1) how do principals perceive their own behaviors and activities relative to professional development; (2) how do teachers perceive administrator\u27s behavior and actions relative to professional development; and (3) to what extent did principals base the professional development activities and practices within their schools on the National Staff Development Standards?;This study used both qualitative and quantitative methods via a questionnaire and interview. The Instructional Leadership Inventory (ILI) was developed in collaboration with two other researchers in order to gather data on teachers\u27 and principals\u27 perceptions regarding instructional leadership, including professional development. Of the 84 Likert-type scale items in each questionnaire, 39 items specifically related to principals\u27 and teachers\u27 perception of professional development practices in their schools. The 400 participants surveyed in this study were principals who had been named Principal of the Year in 2004 by the National Association of Secondary School Principals or the National Association of Elementary School Principals and three teachers selected from each principal\u27s staff; Findings from this study showed that principals did perceive themselves as providing effective leadership for teachers\u27 professional development. However, there were responses which indicated that the National Staff Development Standards were not implemented nor relied on research based practices. Results of this study indicated significant differences between principals\u27 perceptions of their own behaviors and activities relative to collaboration, teacher and principal professional development planning, research discussions, teacher implementation of new strategies, peer mentoring, and teacher leadership. This study supported Lieberman\u27s 1995 findings that professional development ignores the context where teachers work (p. 595).*; *This dissertation is a compound document (contains both a paper copy and a CD as part of the dissertation).
