MiRo: Social Interaction and Cognition in an Animal-like Companion Robot
Future companion and assistive robots will interact directly with end-users in their own homes over extended periods of time. To be useful, and remain engaging over the long-term, these technologies need to pass a new threshold in social robotics-to be aware of people, their identities, emotions and intentions and to adapt their behavior to different individuals. Our immediate goal is to match the social cognition ability of companion animals who recognize people and their intentions without linguistic communication. The MiRo robot is a pet-sized mobile platform, with a brain-based control system and an emotionally-engaging appearance, which is being developed for research on companion robotics, and for applications in education, assistive living and robot-assisted therapy. This paper describes new MiRo capabilities for animal-like perception and social cognition that support the adaptation of behavior towards people and other robots
Wide Area Network Access to CMS Data Using the Lustre Filesystem
In this paper, we explore the use of the Lustre cluster filesystem over the wide area network to access Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) data stored on physical devices located hundreds of kilometres away. We describe the experimental testbed and report on the I/O performance of applications writing and reading data on the distributed Lustre filesystem established across the WAN. We compare the I/O performance of a CMS application to the performance obtained with IOzone, a standard benchmark tool. We then examine the I/O performance of the CMS application running multiple processes on a single server. And compare the Lustre results to results obtained on data stored on local filesystems. Our measurements reveal that the IOzone benchmark tool, accessing data sequentially, can saturate the Gbps network link that connects our Lustre client in Miami Florida to the Lustre storage located in Gainesville, Florida. We also find that the I/O rates of the CMS application is significantly less than what can be obtained with IOzone for sequential access to data

Divergent functions for airway epithelial matrix metalloproteinase 7 and retinoic acid in experimental asthma.
The innate immune response of airway epithelial cells to airborne allergens initiates the development of T cell responses that are central to allergic inflammation. Although proteinase allergens induce the expression of interleukin 25, we show here that epithelial matrix metalloproteinase 7 (MMP7) was expressed during asthma and was required for the maximum activity of interleukin 25 in promoting the differentiation of T helper type 2 cells. Allergen-challenged Mmp7(-/-) mice had less airway hyper-reactivity and production of allergic inflammatory cytokines and higher expression of retinal dehydrogenase 1. Inhibition of retinal dehydrogenase 1 restored the asthma phenotype of Mmp7(-/-) mice and inhibited the responses of lung regulatory T cells, whereas exogenous administration of retinoic acid attenuated the asthma phenotype. Thus, MMP7 coordinates allergic lung inflammation by activating interleukin 25 while simultaneously inhibiting retinoid-dependent development of regulatory T cells
Growing-up hand in hand with robots: Designing and evaluating child-robot interaction from a developmental perspective
Robots are becoming part of children's care, entertainment, education, social assistance and therapy. A steadily growing body of Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) research shows that child-robot interaction (CRI) holds promises to support children's development in novel ways. However, research has shown that technologies that do not take into account children's needs, abilities, interests, and developmental characteristics may have a limited or even negative impact on their physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and moral development. As a result, robotic technology that aims to support children via means of social interaction has to take the developmental perspective into consideration. With this workshop (the third of a series of workshops focusing CRI research), we aim to bring together researchers to discuss how a developmental perspective play a role for smart and natural interaction between robots and children. We invite participants to share their experiences on the challenges of taking the developmental perspective in CRI, such as long-term sustained interactions in the wild, involving children and other stakeholders in the design process and more. Looking across disciplinary boundaries, we hope to stimulate thought-provoking discussions on epistemology, methods, approaches, techniques, interaction scenarios and design principles focused on supporting children's development through interaction with robotic technology. Our goal does not only focus on the conception and formulation of the outcomes in the context of the workshop venue, but also on their establishment and availability for the HRI community in different forms
New Spirometry Indices for Detecting Mild Airflow Obstruction.
The diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) relies on demonstration of airflow obstruction. Traditional spirometric indices miss a number of subjects with respiratory symptoms or structural lung disease on imaging. We hypothesized that utilizing all data points on the expiratory spirometry curves to assess their shape will improve detection of mild airflow obstruction and structural lung disease. We analyzed spirometry data of 8307 participants enrolled in the COPDGene study, and derived metrics of airflow obstruction based on the shape on the volume-time (Parameter D), and flow-volume curves (Transition Point and Transition Distance). We tested associations of these parameters with CT measures of lung disease, respiratory morbidity, and mortality using regression analyses. There were significant correlations between FEV1/FVC with Parameter D (r = -0.83; p < 0.001), Transition Point (r = 0.69; p < 0.001), and Transition Distance (r = 0.50; p < 0.001). All metrics had significant associations with emphysema, small airway disease, dyspnea, and respiratory-quality of life (p < 0.001). The highest quartile for Parameter D was independently associated with all-cause mortality (adjusted HR 3.22,95% CI 2.42-4.27; p < 0.001) but a substantial number of participants in the highest quartile were categorized as GOLD 0 and 1 by traditional criteria (1.8% and 33.7%). Parameter D identified an additional 9.5% of participants with mild or non-recognized disease as abnormal with greater burden of structural lung disease compared with controls. The data points on the flow-volume and volume-time curves can be used to derive indices of airflow obstruction that identify additional subjects with disease who are deemed to be normal by traditional criteria
The Calibration of Mid-Infrared Star Formation Rate Indicators
With the goal of investigating the degree to which the mid-infrared emission
traces the star formation rate (SFR), we analyze Spitzer 8 um and 24 um data of
star-forming regions in a sample of 33 nearby galaxies with available
HST/NICMOS images in the Paschen-alpha (1.8756 um) emission line. The galaxies
are drawn from the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS) sample, and
cover a range of morphologies and a factor ~10 in oxygen abundance. Published
data on local low-metallicity starburst galaxies and Luminous Infrared Galaxies
are also included in the analysis. Both the stellar-continuum-subtracted 8 um
emission and the 24 um emission correlate with the extinction-corrected
Pa-alpha line emission, although neither relationship is linear. Simple models
of stellar populations and dust extinction and emission are able to reproduce
the observed non-linear trend of the 24 um emission versus number of ionizing
photons, including the modest deficiency of 24 um emission in the low
metallicity regions, which results from a combination of decreasing dust
opacity and dust temperature at low luminosities. Conversely, the trend of the
8 um emission as a function of the number of ionizing photons is not well
reproduced by the same models. The 8 um emission is contributed, in larger
measure than the 24 um emission, by dust heated by non-ionizing stellar
populations, in agreement with previous findings. Two SFR calibrations, one
using the 24 um emission and the other using a combination of the 24 um and
H-alpha luminosities (Kennicutt et al. 2007), are presented. No calibration is
presented for the 8 um emission, because of its significant dependence on both
metallicity and environment. The calibrations presented here should be directly

Mediterranean diet and telomere length in Nurses’ Health Study: population based cohort study
Objective: To examine whether adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with longer telomere length, a biomarker of aging. Design: Population based cohort study. Setting: Nurses’ Health Study, an ongoing prospective cohort study of 121 700 nurses enrolled in 1976; in 1989-90 a subset of 32 825 women provided blood samples. Participants: 4676 disease-free women from nested case-control studies within the Nurses’ Health Study with telomere length measured who also completed food frequency questionnaires. Main outcome measure Association between relative telomere lengths in peripheral blood leukocytes measured by quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction and Alternate Mediterranean Diet score calculated from self reported dietary data. Results: Greater adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with longer telomeres after adjustment for potential confounders. Least squares mean telomere length z scores were −0.038 (SE 0.035) for the lowest Mediterranean diet score groups and 0.072 (0.030) for the highest group (P for trend=0.004). Conclusion: In this large study, greater adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with longer telomeres. These results further support the benefits of adherence to the Mediterranean diet for promoting health and longevity
