    Literacy Development Through the Incorporation of Literature in Language Education for Malaysian Secondary School Students

    Literacy is a major concern among educators in the Malaysian education scenario. Various programmes have been identified and implemented in primary and secondary schools to raise the standard of the English language among students. Among them is the implementation of various English language reading programmes. This move has been seen as necessary as part of the Malaysian government\u27s efforts to make all Malaysians proficient in the English language. To this end, the Malaysian Ministry of Education has incorporated literature into the English language subject. Despite the concerted efforts from the various sections of the Ministry of Educations, the effectiveness of these programmes has been unclear. This study looks into the various programmes implemented in the Malaysian primary and secondary schools. Using a questionnaire, the study attempts to identify students\u27 perception on the types of literary genre they enjoy reading. The study also looks into the various activities carried out by English teachers and students\u27 views on the types of activities they enjoy and found useful in the classroom

    A modified apparatus for dual, sterilized, isolated perfusion of the rat liver

    The isolated perfused rat liver (IPRL) has proven to be a useful model for the study of physiology and pathology of the liver. For research in nonparenchymal cell (NPC) function that includes measurement of cytokine production (eg, TNF), it is necessary to have a sterilized perfusion system. We have modified the IPRL apparatus so as to be able to perform sterile perfusions of two livers simultaneously. The perfusion apparatus is a recirculating closed system in which the oxygenator is a plastic container separated into two chambers by a fenestrated plastic wall. A disposable macropore filter functions as both a bubble trap and perfusate filter. The sterilization process is done by immersing the various components in Benz-All solution. The tubing is disinfected by irrigation with 10% Clorox followed by 0.9% sodium chloride solution. The perfusate used is filter-sterilized Krebs buffer solution containing 0.5 g Mandol/250 mL perfusate. Not only can two organs be conveniently perfused simultaneously, but the entire system can be reliably sterilized for up to 20 consecutive perfusions. Bile production is higher and more stable with less leakage of intracellular enzymes.     The security systems in airports are very important and the detection of entry of unauthorized person must be in high rate so as to have an improved efficient system. The real time systems in airports are implemented based on CCTV cameras. These CCTV cameras are used to record the events for future references. The high rapidity of correlation must be performed for the improvement of security in airports. Firstly, 4f system is introduced into the real time security system of the airport. The introduction of this optical system improves system performance and high speed of correlation. This optical system is designed in the simulation environment of MATLAB. The CCTV images and database images are compared together in MATLAB for various conditions. These conditions help to define the performance of the projected system and to have a better evaluation of the projected architecture. The projected system can outperform conventional correlator based systems with elevated speed of correlation. The projected system enabled by dynamic Fourier plane correlator system was found to have high speed performance

    Performance Measurement of Small Cell Power Management Mechanism in 5G Cellular Networks using Firefly Algorithm

    In cellular networks, with the increase in demand, designing a base station (BS) with less energy consumption remains a challenge for researchers. Also, in a heterogeneous network that is dense in nature, the distribution of numerous small BS has become a challenging issue in terms of expanding the cost of energy. In this paper, we investigate an optimized nature-based cluster sleep technique for reducing the power consumption in the BS as well as the interference in the network. The small BS are grouped along with the interference, which is assumed to be the cluster, which is quite large, where the fire fly (FF) algorithm is applied to frame the sleep technique for the small BS. These FF algorithms, which are based on fire fly attractiveness behavior, improve connectivity among the base stations in an energy-efficient way. The outcomes reveal that the projected sleep technique with the FF algorithm reduces the power consumed by the BS and also gives satisfactory performance for mobile users. The results were compared with the other techniques, such as BS conventional sleep mode and BS sleep mode with LEACH. The proposed method outperformed the other techniques

    Recovery of Accidental Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) in an Infant Bonnet Macaque (Macaca radiata) by Progesterone Therapy

    An infant male bonnet macaque with a history of accident and lateral recumbency presented to the Veterinary Clinical Complex, VCRI, Orathanadu. On examination he scored a 10 on the modified Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), and the animal had racoon eyes. Immediately skull X-ray was taken and it revealed two radiating temporal bone fracture. These characteristics strongly pointed to a tentative diagnosis of Traumatic Brain Injury. In addition to supportive care, Progesterone, a neuroprotective steroid, was continuously administered to the animal at a dose rate of 0.2 mg per kg SID P.O. In order to manage and monitor the animal health, it was admitted to the critical care unit. On the tenth day, the animal showed slight improvement and had hemiparesis on the contralateral side of the cranial lesion. The animal\u27s limb reflexes were fully restored by day 20. However cerebral and vestibular lesions persisted with signs of blindness, nystagmus, and circling. After 60 days of continuous treatment animal recovered uneventfully

    The role of pregnancy-associated plasma protein-a level in the first trimester of pregnancy and clinical outcome in an urban referral centre

    Background: Estimation of serum PAPP-A levels studied predictability for adverse perinatal outcome. This case control study tries to establish the association between low PAPP-A levels among the pregnant woman and adverse maternal foetal outcome.Methods: This is an case-control study during 2017-2018 in the women delivered at Department of OBG at Mehta Hospitals. Women delivered in the labour room  had a first trimester screening of PAPP-A level were explained, taken informed consent, questionnaire which include detailed antenatal history, mode of delivery and baby data.  Depending upon outcome, the subjects are classified as case group or control group, out of the study sample of 264 subjects, 88 patients who had complications were taken as cases and 176 patients with no complications taken as control were undertaken.Results: Low PAPP-A level (<0.5 MoM) showed high incidence of PIH and preeclampsia, followed by IUGR and Preterm. PAPP-A level >0.5 MoM, normal outcome is more than the adverse outcome. The difference in the PAPP-A levels is statistically significant. In women with low PAPP A level, low birth weight found statistically significant when compared with <0.5 PAPP A level. The sensitivity of PAPP A levels in identifying the complicated outcomes was 17.04%.The specificity was 98.85%. The positive predictive value of predicting the complications was 88.23% and negative predictive value of 70.44%.Conclusions: The low PAPP-A levels confirmed during first trimester of pregnancy is associated with adverse maternal and foetal outcome such as PIH, preeclampsia, preterm, IUGR and LBW

    Current tidal power technologies and their suitability for applications in coastal and marine areas

    A considerable body of research is currently being performed to quantify available tidal energy resources and to develop efficient devices with which to harness them. This work is naturally focussed on maximising power generation from the most promising sites, and a review of the literature suggests that the potential for smaller scale, local tidal power generation from shallow near-shore sites has not yet been investigated. If such generation is feasible, it could have the potential to provide sustainable electricity for nearby coastal homes and communities as part of a distributed generation strategy, and would benefit from easier installation and maintenance, lower cabling and infrastructure requirements and reduced capital costs when compared with larger scale projects. This article reviews tidal barrages and lagoons, tidal turbines, oscillating hydrofoils and tidal kites to assess their suitability for small-scale electricity generation in shallow waters. This is achieved by discussing the power density, scalability, durability, maintainability, economic potential and environmental impacts of each concept. The performance of each technology in each criterion is scored against axial-flow turbines, allowing for them to be ranked according to their overall suitability. The review suggests that tidal kites and range devices are not suitable for small-scale shallow water applications due to depth and size requirements respectively. Cross-flow turbines appear to be the most suitable technology, as they have high power densities and a maximum size that is not constrained by water depth
