    Mental health and the workplace: issues for developing countries

    The capacity to work productively is a key component of health and emotional well-being. Common Mental Disorders (CMDs) are associated with reduced workplace productivity. It is anticipated that this impact is greatest in developing countries. Furthermore, workplace stress is associated with a significant adverse impact on emotional wellbeing and is linked with an increased risk of CMDs. This review will elaborate on the relationship between workplace environment and psychiatric morbidity. The evidence for mental health promotion and intervention studies will be discussed. A case will be developed to advocate for workplace reform and research to improve mental health in workplaces in developing countries in order to improve the wellbeing of employees and workplace productivity

    Cystic Echinococcosis of the Pelvic Bone with Recurrences: A Case Report

    Hydatid cysts commonly affect the liver and the lung. However, they rarely involve bones with vertebral column. We hereby report a case of a female patient with cystic echinococcosis of the hip bone and ilium. She presented with a long history of frequent recurrences highlighting the dismal prognosis at this rare site. Resection of the hydatid cyst from the sacroiliac region was done with allograft and autograft (rib graft) with lumbosacroiliac fixation. Follow-up of the patient at 6 months showed no detectable abnormality on radiology and the patient was doing well

    Effect of frying on physicochemical properties of sesame and soybean oil blend

    Most common cooking oil, such as soybean oil, can not be used for high-temperature applications, as they are highly susceptible to oxidation. Sesame seed oil rich in natural antioxidants provides high oxidative stability. Therefore, blending sesame oil with soybean oil offer improved oxidative stability. This study aims to determine the effect of frying on the physicochemical properties of sesame and soyabean oil blend. Soybean oil (SO) was blended with sesame seed oil (SSO) in the ratio of A-40:60, B-60:40 and C-50:50 so as to enhance its market acceptability. The changes occurring in soybean and sesame seed oil blend during repeated frying cycles were monitored. The parameters assessed were: Refractive index, specific gravity, viscosity, saponification value, free fatty acid (FFA) , peroxide value, and acid value. Fresh and fried oil blends were also characterised by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). No significant changes were observed for refractive index and specific gravity values in oil blends. Viscosity of blend B blend was the least, making it desirable for cooking purposes. However, FFA, acid value and peroxide value increased after each frying cycle. The increment of FFA and AV was found low for blend A (10% and 10%,) than blend B (27%,13%) and blend C (13%,13%). The peroxide value of all samples was within the acceptable range. The results of the present study definitely indicated that blending sesame oil with soybean oil could produce an oil blend which is economically feasible and provide desirable physicochemical properties for cooking purposes

    Making of a unique birth control vaccine against hCG with additional potential of therapy of advanced stage cancers and prevention of obesity and insulin resistance

    Reviewed is the work which led to the development of a unique vaccine that prevents pregnancy in sexually active women without impairment of ovulation and block of their making normally their sex steroid hormones. Being given that hCG is not expressed by non-pregnant females, immunization with the vaccine is devoid of any crossreaction with any tissue of the body. It is totally reversible and women regained fertility on decline of antibodies. A recombinant vaccine has been developed which is highly immunogenic in mice. It is undergoing extensive toxicology under GLP conditions in rodents and a primate species, the marmosets, before resumption of clinical trials. Ectopic expression of hCG or its subunits takes place in a variety of cancers, particularly at advanced stage with adverse survival and poor prognosis. Anti-hCG antibodies exercise therapeutic action against such cancers as indicated by in vitro culture and in vivo studies in nude mice. Transgenic hCG β mice put on weight and manifest insulin resistance. Immunization of these mice with the recombinant hCG β-LTB vaccine prevents obesity and insulin resistance.Fil: Talwar, G. P..     Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is well known for its propensity to metastasize to unusual sites. Metastasis to the gall bladder (GB) has been reported in the literature rarely. We herein report an interesting case of metastatic RCC, which presented with cholecystitis. Gall bladder is a rare site of metastasis of RCC. Polypoid lesions of the GB in patients who have a synchronous or a prior history of RCC should be considered as metastatic lesions. It needs to be differentiated from primary clear cell carcinoma of the GB with the help of immunohistochemistry

    Thermal conductivity of copper films

    The thermal conductivity of thin films of copper (400-8000 Å) has been measured in the temperature range 100-500 K. It decreases with decreasing film thickness. An electrical-thermal transport analogy has been used to calculate the size-dependent thermal conductivity of the thin copper films. The decrease of the thermal conductivity with thickness is attributed partly to the scattering of the conduction electrons from the film surfaces and partly to the scattering by lattice impurities and frozen-in structural defects in the films. The variation of the thermal conductivity with temperature agrees with the variation for bulk copper. The Lorentz ratio has been determined and is found to vary from 2.4 × 10-8 to 2.0 × 10-8W Ω/deg2 for film thicknesses ranging from 400 to 8000 Å

    Thermal conductivity of ultrathin metal films in multilayer structures

    Thermal and electrical conductivities of 28 layers of 100-Ă…-thick and 6 layers of 500-Ă…-thick polycrystalline copper films, each individually sandwiched between 25-Ă…-thick amorphous Ge or SiO films, have been measured. The results show that, provided no interfacial alloying occurs (as is the case with SiO films), the effective values of the conductivities of the multilayer structure are very close to those of the individual (100 or 500 Ă…) copper films. This equivalence of the transport behavior enables the measurements of the thermal conductivity of ultrathin metal films. Further, it indicates no significant enhancement of diffuse scattering of electrons and phonons at the surfaces of the copper films due to the presence of multiple interfaces
