Radiation Hardness tests with neutron flux on different Silicon photomultiplier devices
Radiation hardness is an important requirement for solid state readout
devices operating in high radiation environments common in particle physics
experiments. The MEGII experiment, at PSI, Switzerland, investigates the
forbidden decay . Exploiting the most intense
muon beam of the world. A significant flux of non-thermal neutrons (kinetic
energy ) is present in the experimental hall produced along
the beamline and in the hall itself. We present the effects of neutron fluxes
comparable to the MEGII expected doses on several Silicon PhotoMulitpliers
(SiPMs). The tested models are: AdvanSiD ASD-NUV3S-P50 (used in MEGII
experiment), AdvanSiD ASD-NUV3S-P40, AdvanSiD ASD-RGB3S-P40, Hamamatsu and
Excelitas C30742-33-050-X. The neutron source is the thermal Sub-critical
Multiplication complex (SM1) moderated with water, located at the University of
Pavia (Italy). We report the change of SiPMs most important electric
parameters: dark current, dark pulse frequency, gain, direct bias resistance,

Long range transport and fate of a stratospheric volcanic cloud from Soufrière Hills volcano, Montserrat
International audienceVolcanic eruptions emit gases, ash particles and hydrometeors into the atmosphere, occasionally reaching heights of 20 km or more, to reside in the stratospheric overworld where they affect the radiative balance of the atmosphere and the Earth's climate. Here we use satellite measurements and a Lagrangian particle dispersion model to determine the mass loadings, vertical penetration, horizontal extent, dispersion and transport of volcanic gases and particles in the stratosphere from the volcanic cloud emitted during the 20 May 2006 eruption of Soufrière Hills volcano, Montserrat, West Indies. Infrared, ultraviolet and microwave radiation measurements from two polar orbiters are used to quantify the gases and particles, and track the movement of the cloud for 23 days, over a distance of ~18 000 km. Approximately, 0.1±0.01 Tg(S) was injected into the stratosphere in the form of SO2: the largest single sulphur input to the stratosphere in 2006. Microwave Limb Sounder measurements indicate an enhanced mass of HCl of ~0.003?0.01 Tg. Geosynchronous satellite data reveal the rapid nature of the stratospheric injection and indicate that the eruption cloud contained ~2 Tg of ice, with very little ash reaching the stratosphere. These new satellite measurements of volcanic gases and particles can be used to test the sensitivity of climate to volcanic forcing and assess the impact of stratospheric sulphates on climate cooling
On the Integrability of the Bukhvostov-Lipatov Model
The integrability of the Bukhvostov-Lipatov four-fermion model is
investigated. It is shown that the classical model possesses a current of
Lorentz spin 3, conserved both in the bulk and on the half-line for specific
types of boundary actions. It is then established that the conservation law is
spoiled at the quantum level -- a fact that might indicate that the quantum
Bukhvostov-Lipatov model is not integrable, contrary to what was previously

Coherent States Expectation Values as Semiclassical Trajectories
We study the time evolution of the expectation value of the anharmonic
oscillator coordinate in a coherent state as a toy model for understanding the
semiclassical solutions in quantum field theory. By using the deformation
quantization techniques, we show that the coherent state expectation value can
be expanded in powers of such that the zeroth-order term is a classical
solution while the first-order correction is given as a phase-space Laplacian
acting on the classical solution. This is then compared to the effective action
solution for the one-dimensional \f^4 perturbative quantum field theory. We
find an agreement up to the order \l\hbar, where \l is the coupling
constant, while at the order \l^2 \hbar there is a disagreement. Hence the
coherent state expectation values define an alternative semiclassical dynamics
to that of the effective action. The coherent state semiclassical trajectories
are exactly computable and they can coincide with the effective action
trajectories in the case of two-dimensional integrable field theories.Comment: 20 pages, no figure
Evolutionary Constraints in the b-Globin Cluster: The Signature of Purifying Selection at the d-Globin (HBD) Locus and Its Role in Developmental Gene Regulation
Human hemoglobins, the oxygen carriers in the blood, are composed by two α-like and two β-like globin monomers. The β-globin gene cluster located at 11p15.5 comprises one pseudogene and five genes whose expression undergoes two critical switches: the embryonic-to-fetal and fetal-to-adult transition. HBD encodes the δ-globin chain of the minor adult hemoglobin (HbA2), which is assumed to be physiologically irrelevant. Paradoxically, reduced diversity levels have been reported for this gene. In this study, we sought a detailed portrait of the genetic variation within the β-globin cluster in a large human population panel from different geographic backgrounds. We resequenced the coding and noncoding regions of the two adult β-globin genes (HBD and HBB) in European and African populations, and analyzed the data from the β-globin cluster (HBE, HBG2, HBG1, HBBP1, HBD, and HBB) in 1,092 individuals representing 14 populations sequenced as part of the 1000 Genomes Project. Additionally, we assessed the diversity levels in nonhuman primates using chimpanzee sequence data provided by the PanMap Project. Comprehensive analyses, based on classic neutrality tests, empirical and haplotype-based studies, revealed that HBD and its neighbor pseudogene HBBP1 have mainly evolved under purifying selection, suggesting that their roles are essential and nonredundant. Moreover, in the light of recent studies on the chromatin conformation of the β-globin cluster, we present evidence sustaining that the strong functional constraints underlying the decreased contemporary diversity at these two regions were not driven by protein function but instead are likely due to a regulatory role in ontogenic switches of gene expression
Discrepâncias entre resultados de reações de Guerreiro-Machado executadas em diferentes laboratórios
Reações de fixação de complemento feitas em três laboratórios, usando basicamente a mesma técnica, apresentaram resultados discrepantes com soros chagásicos. Somente 16 soros de um lote de 26 pacientes em fase aguda de infecção tiveram resultados positivos nos três laboratórios, embora nenhum deles fosse unanimente negativo. Quando 224 soros de casos parasitologicamente comprovados de doença de Chagas foram examinados, resultados positivos foram obtidos em 95% deles em um laboratório, 89% em outro e apenas 64% no terceiro. Os resultados mostraram que as discrepãncias observadas dependiam da qualidade dos antígenos usados, dando ênfase à necessidade não só da padronização dos preparados antigênicos, como também da metodologia do teste, a fim de se poder ter resultados comparáveis quanto à sensibilidade e especificidade da reação de Guerreiro-Machado.Complement-fixation tests performed in three laborarories, using basically the same tecnique, presented discrepant results with Chagasic sera. The results showed that the discrepancies observeddependedof the quality of the antigens used, stressing the necessity of the standardization not only of the antigen preparations but also of the methodology of the tests, in order to have comparable results in the Guerreiro-Machado tests, in sensitivity and specificity
A field study of proteinuria in individuals infected with Schistosoma mansoni
Proteinúria foi detectada em 24,7% de 89 pacientes com a forma hepatoesplênica da esquistos- somose e em apenas 4,6% de 86 pacientes com a forma hepatointestinal dessa parasitose. Todos os pacientes viviam em condições epidemiológicas semelhantes em duas áreas endêmicas da Bahia, Brasil. Dos nove indivíduos que tinham proteinúria acima de 30mg/100ml, oito tinham a forma hepatoesplênica da doença. Estes achados podem estar relacionados à presença de uma glomerulopatia esquistossomótica e mostra o significado desta condição no campo, em áreas endêmicas de esquistos- somose.Proteinuria was detected in 24.7% of 89 individuals with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis and in only 4.6% of 86 subjects with mild hepato-intestinal schistosomiasis, all of them living in comparable conditions in two endemic areas in Bahia, Brazil. From nine individuals who hadproteinuria over30 mg/100ml, eight had hepatosplenic schistosomiasis. These findings maybe related to the presence of schistosomal nephropathy and reveal the significance of this condition in thefield in endemic areas of schistosomiasis
