Architectural Significance of the Seokguram Buddhist Grotto in Gyeongju (Korea)
The purpose of this article is to disclose the hidden architectural proportions and true
nature of the Korean national treasure in Seokguram Grotto, Gyeongju. The authors compare its
features with those of other ancient hypogeal or ashlar constructions with the intention of rediscovering its relevant configuration and latent structural properties in order to demonstrate its uniqueness. The methods employed in the research belong initially to architectural design and composition
to advance in the later stages to the nuances of stone masonry, lighting effects and especially cohesive construction. In this discussion and thorough analysis diverse philosophical and scientific subtleties are brought to the surface. The results demonstrate significant potential thanks to recent architectural developments, such as Tadao Ando’s Buddha Hill in Hokkaido (2017) and the authors’
own proposal for a Buddhist monumentF. S.-A. dedicates this article to his beloved son Francisco Salguero Jiménez. I.
R.-C. wishes to recognize Maria Luisa Rodriguez Cunill and Antonio Maestre Cernadas. J. CabezaLainez feels indebted to Tomomi Odajima for offering sustain in endless travels and recognizes the
indefatigable work and help of Lorenzo Muro. F.P.-H. wants to dedicate his work in this article to
his master Alain Kermorvant, from the University of Tours, for the moments they shared in the
islands of Malta. The endurance of Juhyung Lee is much appreciated by the author

This paper studies the effect of salinity, alkalinity and
amount of ionic and non-ionic synthetic surfactants in
the aqueous emulsifier used to prepare oil-in-water or
asphaltic emulsions on the performance of such
substances as waterproofing on buildings. The emulsion
systems studied here were prepared with Venezuelan
extra heavy oil. The findings showed that the four
variables modified viscosity, surface tension and mean
particle size, physical properties that are instrumental to
asphalt emulsion stability
Stress-strain curves of concrete under monotonic uniaxial compression: a systematic review
sometida a compresión uniaxial
universalmente aceptada.
Como primer paso hacia ese objetivo, en
este trabajo se muestran y analizan de
manera sistemática las distintas dinastÃas
de ecuaciones publicadas, desde las primeras
propuestas de Ritter y Bach (1897-
1899), pasando por los truncamientos
polinómicos más o menos complejos
de la ecuación de Smith y Young (1956),
hasta las aportaciones basadas en distribuciones
estadÃsticas del modelo de
daño, concluyendo con el análisis del
tratamiento dado a la cuestión por las
distintas versiones del Código Modelo y
la Instrucción de Hormigón Estructural
española (EHE-08).The existence of more than thirty different
mathematical expressions that claims
to represent the stress-strain relationship
of a concrete specimen under monotonic
and uniaxial compression (including
those proposed in the official regulations
of different countries that have regulated
by law the use of concrete as structural
material), seems to require an additional
effort in formulating a universally
accepted equation.
As a first step toward that goal, in this
paper we show and analyze systematically
the different dynasties of equations
that have been published, since
the first proposals of Ritter and Bach
(1897-1899), through the, more or less
complicated, polynomial truncations of
the Smith and Young’s equation (1956),
continuing with the contributions based
on statistical distributions of the damage
model, and concluding with the analysis
of the approach to the issue by the successive
versions of the Model Code and
the Spanish Structural Concrete Instruction
(EHE-08)
