    Geomagnetic storm effects on GPS based navigation

    The energetic events on the sun, solar wind and subsequent effects on the Earth's geomagnetic field and upper atmosphere (ionosphere) comprise space weather. Modern navigation systems that use radio-wave signals, reflecting from or propagating through the ionosphere as a means of determining range or distance, are vulnerable to a variety of effects that can degrade the performance of the navigational systems. In particular, the Global Positioning System (GPS) that uses a constellation of earth orbiting satellites are affected due to the space weather phenomena. <br><br> Studies made during two successive geomagnetic storms that occurred during the period from 8 to 12 November 2004, have clearly revealed the adverse affects on the GPS range delay as inferred from the Total Electron Content (TEC) measurements made from a chain of seven dual frequency GPS receivers installed in the Indian sector. Significant increases in TEC at the Equatorial Ionization anomaly crest region are observed, resulting in increased range delay during the periods of the storm activity. Further, the storm time rapid changes occurring in TEC resulted in a number of phase slips in the GPS signal compared to those on quiet days. These phase slips often result in the loss of lock of the GPS receivers, similar to those that occur during strong(>10 dB) L-band scintillation events, adversely affecting the GPS based navigation

    Co-variance matrix formalism gives powerful entanglement criteria for continuous as well as finite dimensional systems. We use this formalism to study a mixed channel spin-1 system which is well known in nuclear reactions. A spin-j state can be visualized as being made up of 2j spinors which are represented by a constellation of 2j points on a Bloch sphere using Majorana construction.     Super-reflection of light from a random amplifying medium with disorder in the complex refractive index : Statistics of fluctuations

    The probability distribution of the reflection coefficient for light reflected from a one-dimensional random amplifying medium with {\it cross-correlated} spatial disorder in the real and the imaginary parts of the refractive index is derived using the method of invariant imbedding. The statistics of fluctuations have been obtained for both the correlated telegraph noise and the Gaussian white-noise models for the disorder. In both cases, an enhanced backscattering (super-reflection with reflection coefficient greater than unity) results because of coherent feedback due to Anderson localization and coherent amplification in the medium. The results show that the effect of randomness in the imaginary part of the refractive index on localization and super-reflection is qualitatively different.Comment: RevTex 6 pages, 3 figures in ps file

    PRODUCTIVITY, NUTRIENT UPTAKE AND ECONOMICS OF RABI SUNFLOWER (HELIANTHUS ANNUUS. L) AS INFLUENCED BY TILLAGE PRACTICES AND NITROGEN MANAGEMENT

    ABSTRACT: A field experiment was conducted during Rabi 2011 at Research farm, RARS, Bijapur on a deep black soil under rainfed condition with an objective to study the effect of different tillage practices imposed during kharif and nitrogen management on productivity, nutrient uptake and economics of rabi sunflower. Tillage practices had no significant effect on seed yield and stalk yield of sunflower crop. Seed yield (1187.5 kg ha -1 ) and stalk yield (2483.8 kg ha -1 ) of sunflower were significantly higher with 100% Recommended dose through fertilizer (N 3 ) over N 4 -Farmers' practice (24:30:0 N:P 2 O 5: K 2 O kg ha -1 ) but was on par with rest of the treatments. Significantly higher N uptake was seen with conventional tillage over minimum tillage but was on par with reduced tillage. Neither P nor K uptake was significantly influenced due to tillage practices in sunflower during rabi season. Sunflower fertilized with 100% recommended dose of fertilizer (N 3 ) recorded significantly higher N, P and K uptake at harvest. Maximum gross returns (38061Rs ha -1 ) and net returns (28729 Rs ha -1 ) was realized for the treatment combination T 3 N 3 (Minimum tillage with 100% recommended dose of fertilizer). Reducing the tillage intensity does not significantly influence economics and substituting 50% nitrogen through organic sources produces comparable yields that of inorganic source of nitrogen application

    Systematics of the magnetic-Prandtl-number dependence of homogeneous, isotropic magnetohydrodynamic turbulence

    We present the results of our detailed pseudospectral direct numerical simulation (DNS) studies, with up to 102431024^3 collocation points, of incompressible, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in three dimensions, without a mean magnetic field. Our study concentrates on the dependence of various statistical properties of both decaying and statistically steady MHD turbulence on the magnetic Prandtl number PrM{\rm Pr_M} over a large range, namely, 0.01PrM100.01 \leq {\rm Pr_M} \leq 10. We obtain data for a wide variety of statistical measures such as probability distribution functions (PDFs) of moduli of the vorticity and current density, the energy dissipation rates, and velocity and magnetic-field increments, energy and other spectra, velocity and magnetic-field structure functions, which we use to characterise intermittency, isosurfaces of quantities such as the moduli of the vorticity and current, and joint PDFs such as those of fluid and magnetic dissipation rates. Our systematic study uncovers interesting results that have not been noted hitherto. In particular, we find a crossover from larger intermittency in the magnetic field than in the velocity field, at large PrM{\rm Pr_M}, to smaller intermittency in the magnetic field than in the velocity field, at low PrM{\rm Pr_M}. Furthermore, a comparison of our results for decaying MHD turbulence and its forced, statistically steady analogue suggests that we have strong universality in the sense that, for a fixed value of PrM{\rm Pr_M}, multiscaling exponent ratios agree, at least within our errorbars, for both decaying and statistically steady homogeneous, isotropic MHD turbulence.Comment: 49 pages,33 figure

    Reaping the Potential of Wild Cajanus Species through Pre-Breeding for Improving Resistance to Pod Borer, Helicoverpa armigera, in Cultivated Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.)

    Pod borer (Helicoverpa armigera) causes the highest yield losses in pigeonpea, followed by pod fly (Melanagromyza obtusa). High levels of resistance to pod borer are not available in the cultivated genepool. Several accessions of wild Cajanus species with strong resistance, and different resistance mechanisms (antixenosis and antibiosis) to pod borer have been identified. These accessions can be utilized to improve the pod borer resistance of cultivated pigeonpea. Using pod borer resistant Cajanus scarabaeoides and Cajanus acutifolius as pollen donors and popular pigeonpea varieties as recipients, pre-breeding populations were developed following simple- and complex-cross approaches. Preliminary evaluation of four backcross populations consisting of >2300 introgression lines (ILs) under un-sprayed field conditions resulted in identifying 156 ILs with low visual damage rating scores (5.0–6.0) and low pod borer damage (<50%). Precise re-screening of these ILs over different locations and years resulted in the identification of 21 ILs having improved resistance to pod borer. Because these ILs were derived from wild Cajanus species, they may contain different alleles for different resistance components to pod borer. Hence, these ILs are ready-to-use novel and diverse sources of pod borer resistance that can be utilized for improving the pod borer resistance of cultivated pigeonpea
