Instability of Rotationally Tuned Dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensates

    Get PDF
The possibility of effectively inverting the sign of the dipole-dipole interaction, by fast rotation of the dipole polarization, is examined within a harmonically trapped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate. Our analysis is based on the stationary states in the Thomas-Fermi limit, in the corotating frame, as well as direct numerical simulations in the Thomas-Fermi regime, explicitly accounting for the rotating polarization. The condensate is found to be inherently unstable due to the dynamical instability of collective modes. This ultimately prevents the realization of robust and long-lived rotationally tuned states. Our findings have major implications for experimentally accessing this regime.Comment: 9 pages with 5 figure

    A Monopole-Antimonopole Solution of the SU(2) Yang-Mills-Higgs Model

    Get PDF
As shown by Taubes, in the Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield limit the SU(2) Yang-Mills-Higgs model possesses smooth finite energy solutions, which do not satisfy the first order Bogomol'nyi equations. We construct numerically such a non-Bogomol'nyi solution, corresponding to a monopole-antimonopole pair, and extend the construction to finite Higgs potential.Comment: 11 pages, including 4 eps figures, LaTex format using RevTe

    Monopoles, Antimonopoles and Vortex Rings

We present a new class of static axially symmetric solutions of SU(2) Yang-Mills-Higgs theory, where the Higgs field vanishes on rings centered around the symmetry axis. Associating a magnetic dipole moment with each Higgs vortex ring, the dipole moments add for solutions in the trivial topological sector, whereas they cancel for magnetically charged solutions.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

Pseudo-Hermitian Interactions in Dirac Theory: Examples

    Get PDF
We consider a couple of examples to study the pseudo-Hermitian interaction in relativistic quantum mechanics. Rasbha interaction, commonly used to study the spin Hall effect, is considered with imaginary coupling. The corresponding Dirac Hamiltonian is shown to be parity pseudo-Hermitian. In the other example we consider parity pseudo-Hermitian scalar interaction with arbitrary parameter in Dirac theory. In both the cases we show that the energy spectrum is real and all the other features of non-relativistic pseudo-Hermitian formulation are present. Using the spectral method the positive definite metric operator (η\eta) has been calculated explicitly for both the models to ensure positive definite norms for the state vectors.Comment: 13 pages, Latex, No figs, Revised version to appear in MPL

A Mathematical Model for Micropolar Fluid Flow Through an Artery with the effect of Stenosis and Post Stenotic Dilatation

    Get PDF
The effects of both stenosis and post stenotic dilatation have been studied on steady flow of micropolar fluid through an artery. Assuming the stenosis to be mild, the equations governing the flow of the proposed model are solved. Closed form expressions for the flow characteristics such as velocity, pressure drop, and volumetric flow rate, resistance to the flow and wall shear stress are derived. The effects of various parameters on resistance to the flow and wall shear stress have been analyzed through the graphs. It is found that the resistance to the flow increases with the height and length of the stenosis, but the resistance to the flow decreases with stenotic dilatation. With the increase of the coupling number the resistance to the flow increases. However, the effect of coupling number is not very significant. The resistance to the flow decreases with the micropolar fluid parameter. The wall shear stress increases with coupling number and stenosis height, but it decreases with micropolar fluid parameter and stenotic dilatation

Entangled Quantum State Discrimination using Pseudo-Hermitian System

We demonstrate how to discriminate two non-orthogonal, entangled quantum state which are slightly different from each other by using pseudo-Hermitian system. The positive definite metric operator which makes the pseudo-Hermitian systems fully consistent quantum theory is used for such a state discrimination. We further show that non-orthogonal states can evolve through a suitably constructed pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian to orthogonal states. Such evolution ceases at exceptional points of the pseudo-Hermitian system.Comment: Latex, 9 pages, 1 figur

Behaviour of Magnetic Tubes in Neutron Star's Interior

It is found from Maxwell's equations that the magnetic field lines are good analogues of relativistic strings. It is shown that the super-conducting current in the neutron star's interior causes local rotation of magnetic flux tubes carrying quantized flux.Comment: 6 pages, no figure

Pseudo-hermitian interaction between an oscillator and a spin half particle in the external magnetic field

We consider a spin half particle in the external magnetic field which couples to a harmonic oscillator through some pseudo-hermitian interaction. We find that the energy eigenvalues for this system are real even though the interaction is not PT invariant.Comment: Latex, no figs, 8 pages. (To appear in Mod. Phys. Lett. A

Degenerate Domain Wall Solutions in Supersymmetric Theories

A family of degenerate domain wall configurations, partially preserving supersymmetry, is discussed in a generalized Wess-Zumino model with two scalar superfields. We establish some general features inherent to the models with continuously degenerate domain walls. For instance, for purely real trajectories additional "integrals of motion" exist. The solution for the profile of the scalar fields for any wall belonging to the family is found in quadratures for arbitrary ratio of the coupling constants. For a special value of this ratio the solution family is obtained explicitly in terms of elementary functions. We also discuss the threshold amplitudes for multiparticle production generated by these solutions. New unexpected nullifications of the threshold amplitudes are found.Comment: 21 pages, LaTeX, 3 figures using epsf.st
