The influence of market orientation on innovation strategies

    Get PDF
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of market orientation on exploratory and exploitative innovation, and the moderating effects of family ownership on these relationships. Design/methodology/approach – This study utilizes multi-group path analysis and confirmatory factor analysis in LISREL on data from 228 firms in the Australian service sector. Findings – This study establishes that both customer and competitor innovation are positively related to exploitative and exploratory innovation. However, customer orientation does not lead to significantly stronger effects on exploitative innovation than on exploratory innovation, and competitor orientation does not lead to significantly stronger effects on exploratory innovation than on exploitative innovation. In addition, the study found that the relationship between customer orientation and exploratory innovation was stronger for family firms, while the relationships between competitor orientation and both exploratory and exploitative innovation were stronger for non-family firms. Research limitations/implications – The cross-sectional design is one weakness of this study. In addition, as firms in the present study came from the service sector the generalizability of the findings to other sectors of the economy need to be determined. Practical implications – These findings of this study highlight the need for managers to build a strong market orientation in order to promote innovation, and consider the effects of ownership structure on innovation strategies. Originality/value – This study is the first to measure the relative influence of customer and competitor orientation on a firm’s use of exploitative and exploratory innovation strategies

ISO 9000 Internalization and Organizational Commitment - Implications for Process Improvement and Operational Performance

This study presents an investigation of the relationship between internalization of ISO 9000 practices and the development of intellectual capital within organizations. We posit that intellectual capital, which comprises of human capital, organizational capital, and social capital, leads to improved processes in an organization. Process improvement, in turn, results in superior operational performance. Using a sample of 321 ISO 9001 certified organizations, the hypothesized relationships are tested by means of the structural equation modeling technique. The results of this study lend strong support for the hypotheses and show that performance benefits from the internalization of ISO 9000 standards occur mainly through the development of human and organizational capital, and the consequent improvement in business processes. This study discusses theoretical and managerial implications, and presents directions for future research

The relationships between firm's strategy, resources and innovation performance: resources-based view perspective

Besides basic competitive priority (quality, cost, delivery and flexibility), innovation has been recognised as one of the primary sources of competitive advantage for manufacturing industry to compete in global markets. This paper, therefore, presents an empirical study on the relationship between firm strategy, resources and innovation performance. Drawing from the grounded theory of resource-based view, and using 218 responses from Thai production/operation managers, this paper shows that differentiation strategy had a positive relationship with both internal capital or internal resources (represented by knowledge and creativity management) and networks capital or external resources (represented by customer and supplier network). The findings also revealed that only internal capital had a positive effect on innovation performance. Finally, contributions to industry practitioner, academia and national agency in supporting and promoting innovation are presented

PUBLIC POLICY FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF PRIVATE SECTOR AND SMES IN A SOCIALIST MARKET ECONOMY

The Vietnamese government has been conducting economic and administrative reforms to create a sustain market conditions for the growth of small to medium enterprises (SMEs) in Vietnam since 1986. In fact, the inconsistency in the government policy, slow pace of market reform, insufficient resource distribution, and poor initiatives to attract external support have postponed the growth of Vietnamese SMEs. From that context, this paper examines the factors contributing to the growth of SMEs by using a conceptual model of 'enabling' factors derived from an extensively review of Vietnamese literature and from an initial qualitative study of the research. Considering the Vietnamese experience with SMEs, this paper argues that in a Confucian culture and socialist market economy, where imperfect market factors, inadequate institutional support structure, and lack of proper coordination between policy formulation and policy implication are apparent, it is essential that the state has a key entrepreneurial responsability to create conductive market conditions. More importantly, acces to adequate resource infrastructure could create the essential shift for a pro-market venture enticing new business sectors to be part of the transitional process building the supportive infrastructure for SME grow.Public Policy, Private Sector Development, Small and Medium Enterprises(SMEs), Socialist Market Economy, Market-Oriented Economy.

Indonesia, an archipelago with vast coastal areas consisting of 809 coastal villages, still faces the same problems of clean water scarcity and accessibility. This research goals are to discover appropriate inexpensive local filtering media and lower the salinity of brackish water in Sidoarjo Regency Indonesia. Regarding previous invention and research, this study deploy an experimental method by physical experiment including local materials along with  chemical experiment: ion exchangers as well as reverse osmosis (RO). The outcomes demonstrate that local media filtration utilizing a combination of a 10-micron filter, kaolin, zeolite, kaolin, activated carbon, and kaolin is the best combination to produce the most transparent, and odorless water. It can reduce Total Dissolved Solid (TDS) and Electrical Conductivity (EC) values by 8.59% and 7.18%, and reduce pH levels by 2.59%. On the other hand, reverse osmosis and ion exchange can achieve 99.5% and 67% reductions in TDS and EC values, respectively
