A global Mars dust composition refined by the Alpha-Particle X-ray Spectrometer in Gale Crater
Modern Martian dust is similar in composition to the global soil unit and bulk basaltic Mars crust, but it is enriched in S and Cl. The Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) on the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover analyzed air fall dust on the science observation tray (o-tray) in Gale Crater to determine dust oxide compositions. The o-tray dust has the highest concentrations of SO3 and Cl measured in Mars dust (SO3 8.3%; Cl 1.1 wt %). The molar S/Cl in the dust (3.35 ± 0.34) is consistent with previous studies of Martian dust and soils (S/Cl = 3.7 ± 0.7). Fe is also elevated ~25% over average Mars soils and the bulk crust. These enrichments link air fall dust with the S-, Cl-, and Fe-rich X-ray amorphous component of Gale Crater soil. Dust and soil have the same S/Cl, constraining the surface concentrations of S and Cl on a global scale
The Gravitino-Stau Scenario after Catalyzed BBN
We consider the impact of Catalyzed Big Bang Nucleosynthesis on theories with
a gravitino LSP and a charged slepton NLSP. In models where the gravitino to
gaugino mass ratio is bounded from below, such as gaugino-mediated SUSY
breaking, we derive a lower bound on the gaugino mass parameter m_1/2. As a
concrete example, we determine the parameter space of gaugino mediation that is
compatible with all cosmological constraints.Comment: 1+14 pages, 6 figures; v2: minor clarifications, 1 reference added,

Axion-mediated dark matter and Higgs diphoton signal
We consider axion-mediated dark matter models motivated by Fermi gamma ray
line at 130 GeV, where anomaly interactions of an axion-like scalar mediate a
singlet Dirac fermion dark matter (DM) to electroweak gauge bosons. In these
models, extra vector-like leptons generate anomaly interactions for the axion
and can also couple to the SM Higgs boson to modify the Higgs-to-diphoton rate.
We can distinguish models by the branching fraction of the DM annihilation into
a photon pair, favoring the model with a triplet fermion. From the condition
that the lighter charged extra lepton must be heavier than dark matter for no
tree-level DM annihilations, we also show that the ratio of Higgs-to-diphoton
rate to the SM value is constrained by vacuum stability to 1.4(1.5) for the
cutoff scale of 10(1) TeV.Comment: 29 pages, 6 figures, references adde
The gravitino coupling to broken gauge theories applied to the MSSM
We consider gravitino couplings in theories with broken gauge symmetries. In
particular, we compute the single gravitino production cross section in W+ W-
fusion processes. Despite recent claims to the contrary, we show that this
process is always subdominant to gluon fusion processes in the high energy
limit. The full calculation is performed numerically; however, we give analytic
expressions for the cross section in the supersymmetric and electroweak limits.
We also confirm these results with the use of the effective theory of goldstino
interactions.Comment: 26 pages, 4 figure
APXS of First Rocks Encountered by Curiosity in Gale Crater: Geochemical Diversity and Volatile Element (K and ZN) Enrichment
The Alpha Particle X-ray spectrometer (APXS) on the Curiosity rover in Gale Crater [1] is the 4th such instrument to have landed on Mars [2]. Along the rover's traverse down-section toward Glenelg (through sol 102), the APXS has examined four rocks and one soil [3]. Gale rocks are geochemically diverse and expand the range of Martian rock compositions to include high volatile and alkali contents (up to 3.0 wt% K2O) with high Fe and Mn (up to 29.2% FeO*)
A Bitter Pill: The Primordial Lithium Problem Worsens
The lithium problem arises from the significant discrepancy between the
primordial 7Li abundance as predicted by BBN theory and the WMAP baryon
density, and the pre-Galactic lithium abundance inferred from observations of
metal-poor (Population II) stars. This problem has loomed for the past decade,
with a persistent discrepancy of a factor of 2--3 in 7Li/H. Recent developments
have sharpened all aspects of the Li problem. Namely: (1) BBN theory
predictions have sharpened due to new nuclear data, particularly the
uncertainty on 3He(alpha,gamma)7Be, has reduced to 7.4%, and with a central
value shift of ~ +0.04 keV barn. (2) The WMAP 5-year data now yields a cosmic
baryon density with an uncertainty reduced to 2.7%. (3) Observations of
metal-poor stars have tested for systematic effects, and have reaped new
lithium isotopic data. With these, we now find that the BBN+WMAP predicts 7Li/H
= (5.24+0.71-0.67) 10^{-10}. The Li problem remains and indeed is exacerbated;
the discrepancy is now a factor 2.4--4.3 or 4.2sigma (from globular cluster
stars) to 5.3sigma (from halo field stars). Possible resolutions to the lithium
problem are briefly reviewed, and key nuclear, particle, and astronomical
measurements highlighted.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures. Comments welcom
Hidden SUSY at the LHC: the light higgsino-world scenario and the role of a lepton collider
While the SUSY flavor, CP and gravitino problems seem to favor a very heavy
spectrum of matter scalars, fine-tuning in the electroweak sector prefers low
values of superpotential mass \mu. In the limit of low \mu, the two lightest
neutralinos and light chargino are higgsino-like. The light charginos and
neutralinos may have large production cross sections at LHC, but since they are
nearly mass degenerate, there is only small energy release in three-body
sparticle decays. Possible dilepton and trilepton signatures are difficult to
observe after mild cuts due to the very soft p_T spectrum of the final state
isolated leptons. Thus, the higgsino-world scenario can easily elude standard
SUSY searches at the LHC. It should motivate experimental searches to focus on
dimuon and trimuon production at the very lowest p_T(\mu) values possible. If
the neutralino relic abundance is enhanced via non-standard cosmological dark
matter production, then there exist excellent prospects for direct or indirect
detection of higgsino-like WIMPs. While the higgsino-world scenario may easily
hide from LHC SUSY searches, a linear e^+e^- collider or a muon collider
operating in the \sqrt{s}\sim 0.5-1 TeV range would be able to easily access
the chargino and neutralino pair production reactions.Comment: 20 pages including 12 .eps figure
Relating the CMSSM and SUGRA models with GUT scale and Super-GUT scale Supersymmetry Breaking
While the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model (CMSSM) with
universal gaugino masses, m_{1/2}, scalar masses, m_0, and A-terms, A_0,
defined at some high energy scale (usually taken to be the GUT scale) is
motivated by general features of supergravity models, it does not carry all of
the constraints imposed by minimal supergravity (mSUGRA). In particular, the
CMSSM does not impose a relation between the trilinear and bilinear soft
supersymmetry breaking terms, B_0 = A_0 - m_0, nor does it impose the relation
between the soft scalar masses and the gravitino mass, m_0 = m_{3/2}. As a
consequence, tan(\beta) is computed given values of the other CMSSM input
parameters. By considering a Giudice-Masiero (GM) extension to mSUGRA, one can
introduce new parameters to the K\"ahler potential which are associated with
the Higgs sector and recover many of the standard CMSSM predictions. However,
depending on the value of A_0, one may have a gravitino or a neutralino dark
matter candidate. We also consider the consequences of imposing the
universality conditions above the GUT scale. This GM extension provides a
natural UV completion for the CMSSM.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures; added erratum correcting several equations and

Peccei-Quinn extended gauge-mediation model with vector-like matter
We construct a gauge-mediated SUSY breaking model with vector-like matters
combined with the Peccei-Quinn mechanism to solve the strong CP problem. The
Peccei-Quinn symmetry plays an essential role for generating sizable masses for
the vector-like matters and the -term without introducing dangerous CP
angle. The model naturally explains both the 125GeV Higgs mass and the muon
anomalous magnetic moment. The stabilization of the Peccei-Quinn scalar and the
cosmology of the saxion and axino are also discussed.Comment: 33 pages, 5 figures; version to be published (JHEP
A note on the primordial abundance of stau NLSPs
In scenarios with a gravitino LSP, there exist strong BBN constraints on the
abundance of a possible stau NLSP. We find that in settings with substantial
left-right mixing of the stau mass eigenstates these constraints can be evaded
even for very long-lived staus.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, discussion on vacuum stability adde
