Elevated maternal lipoprotein (a) and neonatal renal vein thrombosis: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Renal vein thrombosis, although rare in adults, is well recognized in neonates and is one of the most common manifestations of neonatal thromboembolic events. The etiology of renal vein thrombosis remains unidentified in the majority of cases. We report a case of renal vein thrombosis in a neonate associated with elevated maternal lipoprotein (a).</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A full-term female infant, appropriate for gestational age, was born via spontaneous vaginal delivery to an 18-year-old primigravida. The infant's birth weight was 3680 g and the Apgar scores were eight and nine at 1 and 5 minutes respectively. Evaluation of the infant in the newborn nursery revealed a palpable mass in the right lumbar area. Tests revealed hematuria and a high serum creatinine level of 1.5 mg/dl. An abdominal ultrasound Doppler flow study demonstrated an enlarged right kidney, right renal vein thrombosis, and progression of the thrombosis to the inferior vena cava. There was no evidence of saggital sinus thrombosis. An extensive work-up of parents for hypercoagulable conditions was remarkable for a higher plasma lipoprotein (a) level of 73 mg/dl and an elevated fibrinogen level of 512 mg/dl in the mother. All paternal levels were normal. The plasma lipoprotein (a) level in the neonate was also normal. The neonate was treated with low molecular weight heparin (enoxaparin) at 1.5 mg/kg/day every 12 hours for 2 months, at which time a follow-up ultrasound Doppler flow study showed resolution of the thrombosis in both the renal vein and the inferior vena cava.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>There have been no studies to date that have explored the effect of abnormal maternal risk factors on fetal hemostasis. A case-control study is required to investigate whether elevated levels of maternal lipoprotein (a) may be a risk factor for neonatal thrombotic processes. Although infants with this presentation are typically treated with anticoagulation, there is a lack of evidence-based guidelines. Treatment modalities vary between study and treatment centers which warrants the establishment of a national registry.</p
SURVEILLANCE OF CARBAPENEM-RESISTANT GRAM-NEGATIVE BACTERIA FROM ANIMAL SOURCES IN MATHURA REGION, UTTAR PRADESH, INDIA
A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence of Carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative
bacteria (CR-GNB) in animals. The study involves one hundred eighty-four GNB isolates from 214 samples (feces, milk,
pus, and uterine discharge) from Buffalo (N=112), Cattle (N=50), and Dog (N=52). Healthy and diseased animals reported
to Veterinary Clinical Complex were sampled. Carbapenemase production was evaluated by phenotypic methods and
the presence of Metallo β-lactamase genes was assayed by PCR. We observed a 9.78% overall prevalence of CR-GNB in
animal sources. CR-GNB was more frequently recovered from companion animals (19.23%) when compared to livestock
(4.93%). IMP (44.4%), VIM (38.8%), and OXA-48 (16.66 %) were the main MBLs observed in the study
The Peculiar Type Ib Supernova 2006jc: A WCO Wolf-Rayet Star Explosion
We present a theoretical model for Type Ib supernova (SN) 2006jc. We
calculate the evolution of the progenitor star, hydrodynamics and
nucleosynthesis of the SN explosion, and the SN bolometric light curve (LC).
The synthetic bolometric LC is compared with the observed bolometric LC
constructed by integrating the UV, optical, near-infrared (NIR), and
mid-infrared (MIR) fluxes. The progenitor is assumed to be as massive as
on the zero-age main-sequence. The star undergoes extensive mass
loss to reduce its mass down to as small as , thus becoming a WCO
Wolf-Rayet star. The WCO star model has a thick carbon-rich layer, in which
amorphous carbon grains can be formed. This could explain the NIR brightening
and the dust feature seen in the MIR spectrum. We suggest that the progenitor
of SN 2006jc is a WCO Wolf-Rayet star having undergone strong mass loss and
such massive stars are the important sites of dust formation. We derive the
parameters of the explosion model in order to reproduce the bolometric LC of SN
2006jc by the radioactive decays: the ejecta mass , hypernova-like
explosion energy ergs, and ejected Ni mass . We
also calculate the circumstellar interaction and find that a CSM with a flat
density structure is required to reproduce the X-ray LC of SN 2006jc. This
suggests a drastic change of the mass-loss rate and/or the wind velocity that

NMR investigations of the interaction between the azo-dye sunset yellow and Fluorophenol
The interaction of small molecules with larger noncovalent assemblies is important across a wide range of disciplines. Here, we apply two complementary NMR spectroscopic methods to investigate the interaction of various fluorophenol isomers with sunset yellow. This latter molecule is known to form noncovalent aggregates in isotropic solution, and form liquid crystals at high concentrations. We utilize the unique fluorine-19 nucleus of the fluorophenol as a reporter of the interactions via changes in both the observed chemical shift and diffusion coefficients. The data are interpreted in terms of the indefinite self-association model and simple modifications for the incorporation of a second species into an assembly. A change in association mode is tentatively assigned whereby the fluorophenol binds end-on with the sunset yellow aggregates at low concentration and inserts into the stacks at higher concentrations
INTERLAYER COUPLING AND THE METAL-INSULATOR TRANSITION IN Pr-SUBSTITUTED Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+y)
Substitution of rare-earth ions for Ca in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+y is known to cause a
metal-insulator transition. Using resonant photoemission we study how this
chemical substitution affects the electronic structure of the material. For the
partial Cu-density of states at E_F and in the region of the valence band we
observe no significant difference between a pure superconducting sample and an
insulating sample with 60% Pr for Ca. This suggests that the states responsible
for superconductivity are predomi- nately O-states. The partial Pr-4f density
of states was extracted utilizing the Super- Koster-Kronig Pr 4d-4f resonance.
It consists of a single peak at 1.36eV binding energy. The peak shows a
strongly assymetric Doniach-Sunjic line- shape indicating the presence of a
continuum of electronic states with sharp cut off at E_F even in this
insulating sample. This finding excludes a bandgap in the insulating sample and
supports the existance of a mobility gap caused by spatial localization of the
carriers. The presence of such carriers at the Pr-site, between the CuO_2
planes shows that the electronic structure is not purely 2-dimensional but that
there is a finite interlayer coupling. The resonance enhancement of the
photoemission cross section, at the Pr-4d threshold, was studied for the Pr-4f
and for Cu-states. Both the Pr-4f and the Cu-states show a Fano-like resonance.
This resonance of Cu-states with Pr-states is another indication of coupling
between the the Pr-states and those in the CuO_2 plane. Because of the
statistical distribution of the Pr-ions this coupling leads to a non-periodic
potential for the states in the CuO_2 plane which can lead to localization and

Density Matrix Recursion Method: Genuine Multisite Entanglement Distinguishes Odd from Even Quantum Heisenberg Ladders
We introduce an analytical iterative method, the density matrix recursion
method, to generate arbitrary reduced density matrices of superpositions of
short-range dimer coverings on periodic or non-periodic quantum spin-1/2 ladder
lattices, with an arbitrary number of legs. The method can be used to calculate
bipartite as well as multipartite physical properties, including bipartite and
multi-partite entanglement. We apply this technique to distinguish between
even- and odd-legged ladders. Specifically, we show that while genuine
multi-partite entanglement decreases with increasing system size for the

AIFM1 mutation presenting with fatal encephalomyopathy and mitochondrial disease in an infant
Apoptosis-inducing factor mitochondrion-associated 1 (AIFM1), encoded by the gene AIFM1, has roles in electron transport, apoptosis, ferredoxin metabolism, reactive oxygen species generation, and immune system regulation. Here we describe a patient with a novel AIFM1 variant presenting unusually early in life with mitochondrial disease, rapid deterioration, and death. Autopsy, at the age of 4 mo, revealed features of mitochondrial encephalopathy, myopathy, and involvement of peripheral nerves with axonal degeneration. In addition, there was microvesicular steatosis in the liver, thymic noninvolution, follicular bronchiolitis, and pulmonary arterial medial hypertrophy. This report adds to the clinical and pathological spectrum of disease related to AIFM1 mutations and provides insights into the role of AIFM1 in cellular function
