    A rapid method for the computation of equilibrium chemical composition of air to 15000 K

    A rapid computational method has been developed to determine the chemical composition of equilibrium air to 15000 K. Eleven chemically reacting species, i.e., O2, N2, O, NO, N, NO+, e-, N+, O+, Ar, and Ar+ are included. The method involves combining algebraically seven nonlinear equilibrium equations and four linear elemental mass balance and charge neutrality equations. Computational speeds for determining the equilibrium chemical composition are significantly faster than the often used free energy minimization procedure. Data are also included from which the thermodynamic properties of air can be computed. A listing of the computer program together with a set of sample results are included

    Ballistic Entries for Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune with HEEET TPS

    One important observation from the Ice Giants Study was that the predicted and margined thicknesses of HEEET were greater than could be woven with the currently established loom capabilities. Since the cost of a loom upgrade could be substantial and time consuming, the present work explored the entry trajectory space to determine what combinations of entry parameters would result in HEEET thicknesses that fit within the existing loom infrastructure. Toward this end, the entry trajectory space, parameterized by ballistic coefficient and entry flight path angle, was systematically explored for 45 sphere-cone geometries of 3 different radii 0.2 m, 0.3 m, and 0.4 m which covered the range from Galileo-derived probes considered in the Ice Giants Study, and a follow-on study on the possibility of using a single probe architecture (in terms of size and mass) for various destinations, including Venus, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The entry velocities, latitudes, and azimuths at Uranus and Neptune used in the present work were taken from the Ice Giants Study. For each 3DOF trajectory generated by a NASA Ames in-house code, TRAJ, the material response and thickness were computed using another NASA Ames code, FIAT, along with a margins policy proposed by the HEEET project. In the present work, ballistic coefficients ranging from 200 kg/sq m to 350 kg/sq m were considered along with entry flight path angles ranging from -16 to -36 (primarily to allow deceleration loads to vary between 50 g and 200 g)

    Finite-rate water condensation in combustion-heated wind tunnels

    A quasi-one-dimensional method for computing finite rate nucleation and droplet growth of water in a supersonic expansion of combustion products is presented. Sample computations are included for the Langley 8 foot High Temperature Tunnel, but the method can also be applied to other combustion heated wind tunnels. The sample results indicate that the free stream static pressure can be in the range of 25 to 60 percent greater than that computed for isentropic nozzle flow without water condensation. The method provides a tool for examining the effects of water condensation on static state properties and velocity of the supersonic stream in combustion heated wind tunnels

    Process parameters influencing tannase production by Aspergillus niger using mangrove (Rhizophora apiculata) bark in solid substrate fermentation

    Rhizophora apiculata bark is a tannin-rich waste material obtained from charcoal industry. This industrial waste was used as solid substrate in the study for the production of tannase and at the same time, help in minimizing the country’s industrial wastes. This study was carried out to optimize the physical parameters for the maximal tannase production by Aspergillus niger via solid substrate fermentation using a shake flask system. The optimized physical parameters obtained were combination of 0.75 and 2.00 mm of substrate particles at the ratio of 1: 1, Czapek- Dox medium as moisturizing agent at pH 7, initial moisture content of 1: 1.5 (w/v), incubation temperature at 30°C, mixing at every 24 h and the size of inoculum at 1 × 106 spores/ml which finally, produced a maximum tannase of 4.97 U/g of fermented substrate on the 6th day of cultivation.Key words: Solid substrate fermentation, tannase, Aspergillus niger, Rhizophora apiculata barks

    Prescription status of Respiratory tract infection – a survey report

    Objective: The present study was carried out to investigate the Self-medication and non-doctor prescribing of drugs used for respiratory tract infection in developing countries. Problems and factors responsible for this practice in SouthIndia.Methods: The survey was based on the questionnaire method; it was carried out from 1000 respondents at different pharmacies.Results: Literate persons (56%), monthly income between INR.3000- INR.10000 (39%) and also age group between 21-40years (66%) are more prone to self medication. The reason for deviation in self-medication is due to economical condition (57%), lack of time (22%), mild illness (12%), less treatment awareness (9%). Apart from this, some deviations are commonly seen among the prescription following respondents. Most probable respondents are due to financial condition (65%), others are brand name, dosage form, etc.Conclusion: The present study was concluded that pharmacists are one of the key person for prevention of communicable and non-communicable diseases and also improving patient compliance.     Collective multipole-like signatures of entanglement in symmetric N-qubit systems

    A cogent theory of collective multipole-like quantum correlations in symmetric multiqubit states is presented by employing SO(3) irreducible spherical tensor representation. An arbitrary bipartite division of this system leads to a family of inequalities to detect entanglement involving averages of these tensors expressed in terms of the total system angular momentum operator. Implications of this theory to the quantum nature of multipole-like correlations of all orders in the Dicke states are deduced. A selected set of examples illustrate these collective tests. Such tests detect entanglement in macroscopic atomic ensembles, where individual atoms are not accessible.Comment: REVTEX, 4 pages with 1 figure; To appear in Phys. Rev.

    Photometric study of type Ia supernova SN 2002hu

    Optical UBVRI photometry of the type Ia supernova (SN Ia) SN 2002hu covering the period from −2 to +73 d since B maximum is presented. The supernova reached at maximum brightness in B on JD 245 2591.78 ± 0.5 with an apparent magnitude of 16.83 ± 0.02 mag and a relatively blue colour (B−V) =−0.08 ± 0.04 mag. The luminosity decline rate of Δm15(B) = 1.00 ± 0.05 indicates an absolute B magnitude at maximum of MmaxB=−19.38 ± 0.3. The estimated absolute B magnitude, together with the photometric evolution, indicate SN 2002hu was slightly overluminous compared to the average SNe Ia. The distance modulus to the parent galaxy is estimated to be μ= 36.04 ± 0.20

    Field characteristics and geochemistry of pyroxenite and gabbro from Odhimalai and Thenkalmalai hillocks of Bhavani ultramafic complex- South India

    The present study includes documentation of detailed geological field characteristics, petrography and geochemistry of mafic and ultramafic rocks associated with Odhimalai and Thenkalmalai hills of Bhavani complex. The lithologies well exposed in these two hillocks including Dunite, Pyroxenite, Gabbro, displaying layered arrangement comprising (from basement upwards) dunite, peridotite, pyroxenite and anorthosite-gabbro.The geochemical signatures of the gabbro and pyroxenites show a significant variation in major and trace element concentration. The pyroxenites show SiO2 composition ranging from 49.6-55.5%, Al2O3 from 6-13.6%, MgO from 3.6-14.3%, CaO from 8.4-15.5% and TiO2 from 0.24-1.7% while average composition of SiO2, Al2O3, MgO, CaO and TiO2 in gabbro varies (in %) from 49.9-58, 9.4-13, 7.4-13.1, 9-13.4 and 0.26-0.54 respectively.ÂÂ
