The paper is a study of the functions filled by newspaper drawings, a label which may be justified with respect to the notion of caricatures. The contribution first examines the drawing’s grammar : its discursive relationship with the newspaper text (directly or indirectly present). It goes on studying how drawings produce meanings. This is qualitatively assessed through its plastic components and its themes (study of its contents, situations, targets, concerned actants). Then we show what effects result from these drawings. Such effects range from a soft banter to a more critical (sarcastic) ideological questioning that may be referred to as black humour. The interpretative process reflects the semiologist’s method used. The analysis is based on a sample of 35 newspaper drawings culled during October and November 2001 from several French and Spanish newspapers dealing with September 11th and its aftermath
