Sterol transporters at membrane contact sites regulate TORC1 and TORC2 signaling.
Membrane contact sites (MCSs) function to facilitate the formation of membrane domains composed of specialized lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. In cells, membrane domains regulate membrane dynamics and biochemical and signaling pathways. We and others identified a highly conserved family of sterol transport proteins (Ltc/Lam) localized at diverse MCSs. In this study, we describe data indicating that the yeast family members Ltc1 and Ltc3/4 function at the vacuole and plasma membrane, respectively, to create membrane domains that partition upstream regulators of the TORC1 and TORC2 signaling pathways to coordinate cellular stress responses with sterol homeostasis
On-Orbit Results From the NASA Time-Resolved Observations of Precipitation Structure and Storm Intensity With a Constellation of Smallsats (TROPICS) Mission
The NASA TROPICS Earth Venture (EVI-3) CubeSat constellation mission will provide nearly all-weather observations of 3-D temperature and humidity, as well as cloud ice and precipitation horizontal structure, at high temporal resolution to conduct high-value science investigations of tropical cyclones. TROPICS will provide rapid-refresh microwave measurements (median refresh rate better than 60 minutes for the baseline mission) over the tropics that can be used to observe the thermodynamics of the troposphere and precipitation structure for storm systems at the mesoscale and synoptic scale over the entire storm lifecycle. The TROPICS constellation mission comprises four 3UCubeSats (5.4 kg each) in two low-Earth orbital planes. Each CubeSat contains a Blue Canyon Technologies bus and a high-performance radiometer payload to provide temperature profiles using seven channels near the 118.75 GHz oxygen absorption line, water vapor profiles using three channels near the 183 GHz water vapor absorption line, imagery in a single channel near 90 GHz for precipitation measurements (when combined with higher resolution water vapor channels), and a single channel at 205 GHz that is more sensitive to precipitation-sized ice particles. TROPICS spatial resolution and measurement sensitivity is comparable with current state-of-the-art observing platforms. Two dedicated launches (two spacecraft per launch) for the TROPICS constellation mission on Rocket Lab Electron vehicles occurred in 2023 (May 8 and May 26) to place the spacecraft in 32.75-degree inclined orbits at 550 km altitude. Data will be downlinked to the ground via the KSAT-Lite ground network. NASA\u27s Earth System Science Pathfinder (ESSP) Program Office approved the separate TROPICS Pathfinder mission, which launched on June 30, 2021, in advance of the TROPICS constellation mission as a technology demonstration and risk reduction effort. The TROPICS Pathfinder mission has provided an opportunity to checkout and optimize all mission elements prior to the primary constellation mission and is still operating nominally

The NASA Time-Resolved Observations of Precipitation Structure and Storm Intensity with a Constellation of Smallsats (TROPICS) Mission: Results from the Pathfinder Demonstration and Look Ahead to the Constellation Mission
The NASA Time-Resolved Observations of Precipitation structure and storm Intensity with a Constellation of Smallsats (TROPICS) mission will provide nearly all-weather observations of 3-D temperature and humidity, as well as cloud ice and precipitation horizontal structure, at high temporal resolution to conduct high-value science investigations of tropical cyclones. TROPICS will provide rapid-refresh microwave measurements (median refresh rate of approximately 50 minutes for the baseline mission) over the tropics that can be used to observe the thermodynamics of the troposphere and precipitation structure for storm systems at the mesoscale and synoptic scale over the entire storm lifecycle. The TROPICS constellation mission comprises six CubeSats in three low-Earth orbital planes. Each CubeSat will host a high-performance radiometer to provide temperature profiles using seven channels near the 118.75 GHz oxygen absorption line, water vapor profiles using three channels near the 183 GHz water vapor absorption line, imagery in a single channel near 90 GHz for precipitation measurements (when combined with higher resolution water vapor channels), and a single channel at 205 GHz that is more sensitive to precipitation-sized ice particles. TROPICS spatial resolution and measurement sensitivity is comparable with current state-of-the-art observing platforms. Launches for the TROPICS constellation mission are planned in 2022. NASA’s Earth System Science Pathfinder (ESSP) Program Office approved the separate TROPICS Pathfinder mission, which launched into a sun-synchronous orbit (2:00pm LTDN, 530 km) on June 30, 2021, in advance of the TROPICS constellation mission as a technology demonstration and risk reduction effort. The TROPICS Pathfinder mission has provided an opportunity to checkout and optimize all mission elements prior to the primary constellation mission. In this paper, we describe the instrument checkout and calibration/validation plans and progress for the TROPICS Pathfinder mission and discuss first light mission results. All spacecraft and radiometer systems are fully operational as of Launch + 11 months
TOI-3785 b: A Low-Density Neptune Orbiting an M2-Dwarf Star
Using both ground-based transit photometry and high-precision radial velocity
(RV) spectroscopy, we confirm the planetary nature of TOI-3785 b. This
transiting Neptune orbits an M2-Dwarf star with a period of ~4.67 days, a
planetary radius of 5.14 +/- 0.16 Earth Radii, a mass of 14.95 +4.10, -3.92
Earth Masses, and a density of 0.61 +0.18, -0.17 g/cm^3. TOI-3785 b belongs to
a rare population of Neptunes (4 Earth Radii < Rp < 7 Earth Radii) orbiting
cooler, smaller M-dwarf host stars, of which only ~10 have been confirmed. By
increasing the number of confirmed planets, TOI-3785 b offers an opportunity to
compare similar planets across varying planetary and stellar parameter spaces.
Moreover, with a high transmission spectroscopy metric (TSM) of ~150 combined
with a relatively cool equilibrium temperature of 582 +/- 16 K and an inactive
host star, TOI-3785 b is one of the more promising low-density M-dwarf Neptune
targets for atmospheric follow-up. Future investigation into atmospheric mass
loss rates of TOI-3785 b may yield new insights into the atmospheric evolution
of these low-mass gas planets around M-dwarfs.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures, 6 tables, Submitted to A
TOI-5205b: A Jupiter transiting an M dwarf near the Convective Boundary
We present the discovery of TOI-5205b, a transiting Jovian planet orbiting a
solar metallicity M4V star, which was discovered using TESS photometry and then
confirmed using a combination of precise radial velocities, ground-based
photometry, spectra and speckle imaging. The host star TOI-5205 sits near the
eponymous `Jao gap', which is the transition region between partially and
fully-convective M dwarfs. TOI-5205b has one of the highest mass ratio for M
dwarf planets with a mass ratio of almost 0.3, as it orbits a host star
that is just . Its planetary radius is , while the mass is . Additionally, the large size
of the planet orbiting a small star results in a transit depth of ,
making it one of the deepest transits of a confirmed exoplanet orbiting a
main-sequence star. The large transit depth makes TOI-5205b a compelling target
to probe its atmospheric properties, as a means of tracing the potential
formation pathways. While there have been radial velocity-only discoveries of
giant planets around mid M dwarfs, this is the first transiting Jupiter with a
mass measurement discovered around such a low-mass host star. The high mass of
TOI-5205b stretches conventional theories of planet formation and disk scaling
relations that cannot easily recreate the conditions required to form such
planets.Comment: Submitted to ApJ. Comments are welcome. arXiv admin note: text

Embracing the Market: Entry into Self-Employment in Transitional China, 1978-1996
This paper introduces labor market transition as an intervening process by which the macro institutional transition to a market economy alters social stratification outcome. Rather than directly addressing income distribution, it examines the pattern of workers’ entry into self-employment in reform-era China (1978-1996), focusing on rural-urban differences and the temporal trend. Analyses of data from a national representative survey in China show that education, party membership and cadre status all deter urban workers’ entry into self-employment, while education promotes rural workers’ entry into self-employment. As marketization proceeds, the rate of entry into self-employment increases in both rural and urban China, but urban workers are increasingly more likely to take advantages of the new market opportunities. In urban China, college graduates and cadres are still less likely to be involved in self-employment, but they are becoming more likely to do so in the later phase of reform. The diversity of transition scenarios is attributed to rural-urban differences in labor market structures.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/39897/3/wp512.pd
TOI-3984 A b and TOI-5293 A b: two temperate gas giants transiting mid-M dwarfs in wide binary systems
We confirm the planetary nature of two gas giants discovered by TESS to
transit M dwarfs with stellar companions at wide separations. TOI-3984 A
() is an M4 dwarf hosting a short-period (
days) gas giant ( and
) with a wide separation white dwarf companion.
TOI-5293 A () is an M3 dwarf hosting a short-period ( days) gas giant ( and
) with a wide separation M dwarf companion. We
characterize both systems using a combination of ground-based and space-based
photometry, speckle imaging, and high-precision radial velocities from the
Habitable-zone Planet Finder and NEID spectrographs. TOI-3984 A b
( K and ) and TOI-5293 A b
( K and ) are two of the coolest
gas giants among the population of hot Jupiter-sized gas planets orbiting M
dwarfs and are favorable targets for atmospheric characterization of temperate
gas giants and three-dimensional obliquity measurements to probe system
architecture and migration scenarios.Comment: Submitted to AJ, 42 pages, 14 figures. arXiv admin note: substantial

Pan-cancer Alterations of the MYC Oncogene and Its Proximal Network across the Cancer Genome Atlas
Although theMYConcogene has been implicated incancer, a systematic assessment of alterations ofMYC, related transcription factors, and co-regulatoryproteins, forming the proximal MYC network (PMN),across human cancers is lacking. Using computa-tional approaches, we define genomic and proteo-mic features associated with MYC and the PMNacross the 33 cancers of The Cancer Genome Atlas.Pan-cancer, 28% of all samples had at least one ofthe MYC paralogs amplified. In contrast, the MYCantagonists MGA and MNT were the most frequentlymutated or deleted members, proposing a roleas tumor suppressors.MYCalterations were mutu-ally exclusive withPIK3CA,PTEN,APC,orBRAFalterations, suggesting that MYC is a distinct onco-genic driver. Expression analysis revealed MYC-associated pathways in tumor subtypes, such asimmune response and growth factor signaling; chro-matin, translation, and DNA replication/repair wereconserved pan-cancer. This analysis reveals insightsinto MYC biology and is a reference for biomarkersand therapeutics for cancers with alterations ofMYC or the PMN
