Determination of space shuttle flow field by the three-dimensional method of characteristics
The newly improved three-dimensional method of characteristics program has been applied successfully to the calculation of flow fields over a variety of bodies including slab delta wings and shuttle orbiters. Flow fields over fuselage shapes for Mach numbers as low as 1.5 have been calculated. Some typical results are presented
The Efficacy of Group Selection is Increased by Coexistence Dynamics within Groups
Selection on the level of loosely associated groups has been suggested as a route towards the evolution of cooperation between individuals and the subsequent formation of higher-level biological entities. Such group selection explanations remain problematic, however, due to the narrow range of parameters under which they can overturn within-group selection that favours selfish behaviour. In principle, individual selection could act on such parameters so as to strengthen the force of between-group selection and hence increase cooperation and individual fitness, as illustrated in our previous work. However, such a process cannot operate in parameter regions where group selection effects are totally absent, since there would be no selective gradient to follow. One key parameter, which when increased often rapidly causes group selection effects to tend to zero, is initial group size, for when groups are formed randomly then even moderately sized groups lack significant variance in their composition. However, the consequent restriction of any group selection effect to small sized groups is derived from models that assume selfish types will competitively exclude their more cooperative counterparts at within-group equilibrium. In such cases, diversity in the migrant pool can tend to zero and accordingly variance in group composition cannot be generated. In contrast, we show that if within-group dynamics lead to a stable coexistence of selfish and cooperative types, then the range of group sizes showing some effect of group selection is much larger
Study of aerodynamic technology for single-cruise engine V/STOL fighter/attack aircraft
A conceptual design analysis is performed on a single engine V/STOL supersonic fighter/attack concept powered by a series flow tandem fan propulsion system. Forward and aft mounted fans have independent flow paths for V/STOL operation and series flow in high speed flight. Mission, combat and V/STOL performance is calculated. Detailed aerodynamic estimates are made and aerodynamic uncertainties associated with the configuration and estimation methods identified. A wind tunnel research program is developed to resolve principal uncertainties and establish a data base for the baseline configuration and parametric variations
A Reply to Verbeeck and Kearsley: Addressing the Challenges of Including lianas in Global Vegetation Models
Verbeeck and Kearsley (1) rightfully point out that global vegetation models would greatly benefit from implicitly including the effects of lianas. Recent experimental evidence that lianas substantially reduce the capacity of tropical forests to uptake and store carbon is compelling (2, 3). Furthermore, lianas are increasing relative to trees rapidly in many neotropical forests (4), which will further change the way that forests uptake, cycle, and store carbon
Contribution of Lianas to Plant Area Index and Canopy Structure in A Panamanian Forest
Lianas are an important component of tropical forests, where they reduce tree growth, fecundity, and survival. Competition for light from lianas may be intense; however, the amount of light that lianas intercept is poorly understood. We used a large-scale liana-removal experiment to quantify light interception by lianas in a Panamanian secondary forest. We measured the change in plant area index (PAI) and forest structure before and after cutting lianas (for 4 yr) in eight 80 m Ć 80 m plots and eight control plots (16 plots total). We used ground-based LiDAR to measure the 3-dimensional canopy structure before cutting lianas, and then annually for 2 yr afterwards. Six weeks after cutting lianas, mean plot PAI was 20% higher in control vs. liana removal plots. One yr after cutting lianas, mean plot PAI was ~17% higher in control plots. The differences between treatments diminished significantly 2 yr after liana cutting and, after 4 yr, trees had fully compensated for liana removal. Ground-based LiDAR revealed that lianas attenuated light in the upper- and middle-forest canopy layers, and not only in the upper canopy as was previously suspected. Thus, lianas compete with trees by intercepting light in the upper- and mid-canopy of this forest
Global Opportunities to Increase Agricultural Independence Through Phosphorus Recycling
Food production hinges largely upon access to phosphorus (P) fertilizer. Most fertilizer P used in the global agricultural system comes from mining of nonrenewable phosphate rock deposits located within few countries. However, P contained in livestock manure or urban wastes represents a recyclable source of P. To inform development of P recycling technologies and policies, we examined subnational, national, and global spatial patterns for two intersections of land use affording high P recycling potential: (a) manureārich cultivated areas and (b) populous cultivated areas. In turn, we examined overlap between P recycling potential and nationālevel P fertilizer import dependency. Populous cultivated areas were less abundant globally than manureārich cultivated areas, reflecting greater segregation between crops and people compared to crops and livestock, especially in the Americas. Based on a global hexagonal grid (290ākm2 grid cell area), disproportionately large shares of subnational āhot spotsā for P recycling potential occurred in India, China, Southeast Asia, Europe, and parts of Africa. Outside of China, most of the remaining manureārich or populous cultivated areas occurred within nations that had relatively high imports of P fertilizer (net P import:consumption ratios ā„0.4) or substantial increases in fertilizer demand between the 2000s (2002ā2006) and 2010s (2010ā2014). Manureārich cultivated grid cells (those above the 75th percentiles for both manure and cropland extent) represented 12% of the global grid after excluding cropless cells. Annually, the global sum of animal manure P was at least 5 times that contained in human excreta, and among cultivated cells the ratio was frequently higher (median = 8.9). The abundance of potential P recycling hot spots within nations that have depended on fertilizer imports or experienced rising fertilizer demand could prove useful for developing local P sources and maintaining agricultural independence
