    Does Disclosure Reduce Pollution? Evidence from India's Green Rating Project

    Public disclosure programs that collect and disseminate information about firms’ environmental performance are increasingly popular in both developed and developing countries. Yet little is known about whether they actually improve environmental performance, particularly in the latter setting. We use detailed plant-level survey data to evaluate the impact of India’s Green Rating Project (GRP) on the environmental performance of the country’s largest pulp and paper plants. We find that the GRP drove significant reductions in pollution loadings among dirty plants but not among cleaner ones. This result comports with statistical and anecdotal evaluations of similar disclosure programs.     Abstract: We investigate the competitive effects of exchanges or sales of airport landing slots. In our model, airlines with potentially asymmetric slot allocations must decide upon which routes to use their landing slots. When all airlines serve the same routes in a slot-constrained Cournot-Nash equilibrium, small changes in slot allocations among airlines do not affect the overall allocation of slots across routes or air fares. In a symmetric equilibrium where slot-holding airlines have the same number of slots, we find that an increase in the number of slot-holding airlines leads to higher social welfare and consumer surplus, although the number of served routes may decline. Under asymmetric slot allocations, larger slot holders serve “thin” demand routes that are not served by smaller slot holders. In this situation, transfers of slots from larger to smaller slot holders increase social welfare and consumer surplus, even though fewer routes may be served. More generally, our results suggest that increases in slot concentration are harmful to consumers and social welfare, although consumers on relatively thin routes may gain air transportation service as a result.

    Essays on the Impacts of Environmental Regulation on Firm Behavior.

    My dissertation is composed of three papers that examine the effects of environmental policies as they relate to firms' decisions. The challenge of crafting environmental policies that achieve their environmental goals without placing an unnecessary burden on the firms that drive economic growth is becoming increasingly acute as concerns over global warming and other environmental issues continue to grow. All three papers in my dissertation examine effects of relatively new approaches to environmental regulation that attempt to accomplish this task. In the first paper, I analyze the effects of a pollution disclosure and rating program, run by a non-governmental organization in India, on the environmental performance of the country's largest pulp and paper mills. I find that this program drove significant reductions in pollution loadings among dirty plants but not among cleaner ones, and that plants located in wealthier communities were more responsive to these ratings, as were single-plant firms. These findings shed light on the conditions under which information-based regulation may prove effective in improving industrial environmental performance. In the second paper, I provide the most rigorous empirical analysis to date of the effectiveness of renewable portfolio standards (RPS), which are state-level policies designed to promote investment in renewable electric generating capacity. I introduce a new measure for the stringency of an RPS that explicitly accounts for several important dimensions of RPS heterogeneity. My econometric analysis of state-level panel data suggests that RPS policies have had a significant and positive effect on in-state renewable energy development. In my third paper, I return to the topic of disclosure, though this time the program I analyze is a government-run program in the United States. In particular, I use unique establishment-level Census micro data to examine how potential entrants' entry decisions changed in response to the creation of the Toxics Release Inventory. I find that on average, counties that were found to be among the dirtiest in the country experienced a decrease in "dirty" plant births and an even larger increase in "clean" plant births.     Mississippi State Axion Search: A Light Shining though a Wall ALP Search

    The elegant solutions to the strong CP problem predict the existence of a particle called axion. Thus, the search for axion like particles (ALP) has been an ongoing endeavor. The possibility that these axion like particles couple to photons in presence of magnetic field gives rise to a technique of detecting these particles known as light shining through a wall (LSW). Mississippi State Axion Search (MASS) is an experiment employing the LSW technique in search for axion like particles. The apparatus consists of two radio frequency (RF) cavities, both under the influence of strong magnetic field and separated by a lead wall. While one of the cavities houses a strong RF generator, the other cavity houses the detector systems. The MASS apparatus looks for excesses in RF photons that tunnel through the wall as a signature of candidate axion-like particles.     Oral human papillomavirus infection in England and associated risk factors: a case control study.

    Objectives - This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of and associated risk factors for infection with oral high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) in adult participants within England, and to explore any association with oral mucosal buccal epithelial cell and whole blood folate concentration. Design - This was an observational study to determine oral HR-HPV prevalence in the study population. A case-control study was performed to explore the association between infection and folate status. Setting - This study was conducted in Sheffield, United Kingdom between April 2013 and August 2014. Participants - Seven hundred participants, aged 18-60 yr, were recruited from university students (n=179), university and hospital staff (n=163), dental hospital patients (n=13), Sexual Health Sheffield patients (n=122) and the general public (n=223). Interventions - Participants completed a lifestyle and sexual behaviour questionnaire, provided an oral rinse and gargle sample for the detection of oral HR-HPV and an oral mucosal buccal epithelial cell sample for the measurement of oral mucosal buccal epithelial cell folate. A blood sample was collected for measurement of whole blood folate concentration. Outcome measures - The prevalence of oral HR-HPV infection in the study population was the primary outcome measure. Secondary outcome measures included associations between risk factors, folate status and infection. Results - The prevalence of oral HR-HPV infection in this cohort was 2.2% (15/680) with 0.7% (5/680) positive for HPV16 or HPV18. Twenty samples were excluded due to insufficient material for HPV detection. Participants with oral HR-HPV infection were more likely to be a former smoker, and have a greater number of sexual and oral sexual partners. Folate status was not linked to likelihood of HPV infection. Conclusions - The prevalence of oral infection with HR-HPV in adult men and women in Sheffield in the north of England was low.     Brand value: how affective labour helps create brands

    One way brands create value is by engaging the capacity of cultural labourers to animate affective connections with consumers. Brands assemble social spaces that harness the communicative capacities of cultural actors. A mode of branding that works by managing an open-ended social process depends on affective labour. Affective labour involves not only the capacity of individuals to produce specific meanings and feelings, but also the open-endedly social capacity to stimulate and channel attention and recognition. This affective labour does not always depend on making particular "authentic" representations, but on facilitating a general circulation of meaning. By investing in social spaces and relations corporate brands engage popular musicians in new forms of labour. This article examines the participation of popular musicians in branding programmes run in Australia by corporate brands between 2005 and 2010. I examine the accounts of musicians and managers who participate in these programmes to consider how they make their participation in social relations that create brand value meaningful. They employ a variety of practices: identifying with brands, endorsing brands' claims of socially responsible investment in culture, and distancing themselves from their own participation in branded space
