Is group psychotherapy feasible for oncology outpatients attenders selected on the basis of psychological morbidity?

Of 120 consecutive attenders at an oncology outpatients department, 108 were screened for psychological symptoms using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (Zigmond & Snaith, 1983). Thirty-nine patients had significant scores indicating moderate anxiety and/or depression. We felt that this warranted an offer of group psychotherapy in the belief that sharing issues and exploring personal concerns may alleviate some of the experienced psychological distress. Only 10 patients consented to and were able to attend this group, with which five patients persisted. Thus in this group of patients with advanced cancer group psychotherapy was applicable only to a limited number of selected patients. The nature of this study and the size of the population markedly limited our ability to comment on the usefulness of group psychotherapy. Many patients, particularly the most severely psychologically distressed, continued to require other forms of support, particularly domiciliary individual therapy

Perceptions of Electoral Fairness and Voter Turnout

Previous research has established a link between turnout and the extent to which voters are faced with a “meaningful” partisan choice in elections; this study extends the logic of this argument to perceptions of the “meaningfulness” of electoral conduct. It hypothesizes that perceptions of electoral integrity are positively related to turnout. The empirical analysis to test this hypothesis is based on aggregate-level data from 31 countries, combined with survey results from Module 1 of the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems survey project, which includes new and established democracies. Multilevel modeling is employed to control for a variety of individual- and election-level variables that have been found in previous research to influence turnout. The results of the analysis show that perceptions of electoral integrity are indeed positively associated with propensity to vote. </jats:p

Finite element simulation of three-dimensional free-surface flow problems

    Get PDF
An adaptive finite element algorithm is described for the stable solution of three-dimensional free-surface-flow problems based primarily on the use of node movement. The algorithm also includes a discrete remeshing procedure which enhances its accuracy and robustness. The spatial discretisation allows an isoparametric piecewise-quadratic approximation of the domain geometry for accurate resolution of the curved free surface. The technique is illustrated through an implementation for surface-tension-dominated viscous flows modelled in terms of the Stokes equations with suitable boundary conditions on the deforming free surface. Two three-dimensional test problems are used to demonstrate the performance of the method: a liquid bridge problem and the formation of a fluid droplet

Infra-red spectra of 1:10-phenanthroline metal complexes in the rock salt region below 2000 cm-1

Infra-red spectra of twenty two metal-1:10-phenanthroline perchlorates together with spectra of the free ligand, its hydrate and perchlorate salt have been obtained in the region between 600 and 2000 cm-1 from Nujol mulls. In general, the spectra of the complexes were remarkably similar in their gross features and no obvious correlations with magnetic or other physical properties were noted. However, the results provide evidence for co-ordination in the case of the alkali metal complexes and also indicate a co-ordination number of eight in the alkaline earth, lead and manganese complexes. The compositions of all compounds studied were confirmed by elementary microanalysis and the list includes several new compounds as well as a few having compositions differing slightly from those previously reported. The interpretation of the principal features of the spectra is discussed.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/32463/1/0000547.pd
