    Crystal structure of [mu-1kappa^2C^1,C^4:2(1,2,3,4-eta)-1,2,3,4-tetraphenylbuta-1,3-diene-1,4-diyl]bis(tricarbonylosmium)(Os---Os)

    In the title complex C34H20O6Os2 or (mu-eta^4-C4Ph4}$)Os2(CO)6, one Os atom is part of a metallacyclopentadiene ring, while the second Os atom is pi-bonded to the organic portion of this ring. The distance of 2.7494(2)A between the two Os atoms is typical of an Os---Os single bond. Three carbonyl ligands are attached to each Os atom and these six carbonyls adopt an eclipsed conformation. There are no bridging or semibridging CO groups. Two carbonyl ligands and all four phenyl groups are disordered over two slightly different positions for which each atom in the minor components is displaced less than 1A from the corresponding atom in the major components. The refined occupancies of the major components of the carbonyl ligands are 0.568(16) and 0.625(13), while those for the phenyl rings are 0.50(3), 0.510(12), 0.519(18), and 0.568(12)

    Stories and Storytelling in the Libro De Buen Amor : Juan Ruiz\u27s Use of Folktales to Admonish, Persuade and Deceive (Spain).

    The Libro de buen amor, a fourteenth century Spanish text by Juan Ruiz, is an extensive and complex poem rich in partially hidden messages. Thirty-five popular medieval tales form an integral part of the body of the work, and convey important information to the reader through the text of the tales and through the storytelling context created by the author. Scholars have studied the tales most often from an historical perspective, and analyzed them separately from the central narrative; or have studied the textual materials with little emphasis on the function of the tales. Although such studies provide valuable information, they do not deal with the interpretation of the folktales in relation to the work as a whole. Significant information that is embedded in the context of the storytelling event created within the literary work may be overlooked by approaches which examine only textual materials. This analysis of the tales uses criteria suggested by folklorists\u27 studies of observable folklore as a means of discovering the complex relationship of the tales to the literary work and their contribution to the Libro de buen amor. The messages communicated through the text and context of folktales are often ambiguous or even contradictory, but examination of the tales using folklore techniques reveals that they are closely related to each other and to the archpriest\u27s story. One fundamental concern expressed in the Libro de buen amor is the many forms of deceit which prevail in situations dealing with love. On one hand, Juan Ruiz uses the wisdom in folktales to suggest prudent measures that one should take to avoid being a victim of deceit. On the other, he illustrates in his description of the storytelling contexts how the same tales can be used by clever storytellers to deceive.     Lifestyle Intervention in oVarian cancer Enhanced Survival (LIVES) study (NRG/GOG0225): Recruitment, retention and baseline characteristics of a randomized trial of diet and physical activity in ovarian cancer survivors

    OBJECTIVE: The Lifestyle Intervention for oVarian cancer Enhanced Survival (LIVES) is a national study of a combined diet and physical activity intervention for stage II-IV ovarian cancer survival, an under-represented cancer in lifestyle behavioral intervention research. Here, we present the data on recruitment, retention, and baseline demographic, clinical and lifestyle behavior characteristics of the LIVES study participants. METHODS: The LIVES study (NRG Oncology/GOG 0225) is a Phase III diet plus physical activity intervention trial testing the hypothesis that ovarian cancer survivors in the lifestyle intervention will demonstrate better progression-free survival than those in the control condition. Study interventions were delivered via centralized telephone-based health coaching. Baseline descriptive statistics were computed for demographic, clinical, and lifestyle behavior characteristics. RESULTS: The LIVES study exceeded its recruitment goals, enrolling 1205 ovarian cancer survivors from 195 NRG/NCORP-affiliated oncology practices across 49 states from 2012 to 2018. The mean age of enrollees was 59.6 years; the majority (69.4%) with stage III disease; 89% White, 5.5% Hispanic; 64% overweight/obese. Baseline self-reported diet showed a mean daily intake of 6.6 servings of fruit and vegetables, 62.7 fat grams, and 21.7 g of fiber. Physical activity averaged 13.0 MET-hours/week of moderate to vigorous physical activity; 50.9 h/week of sedentary time. Retention rates exceeded 88%. CONCLUSION: The LIVES study demonstrates efficiency in recruiting and retaining ovarian cancer survivors in a 24-month study of diet and physical activity intervention with a primary endpoint of progression free survival that will be reported.     A Study of Riders\u27 Noise Exposure on Bay Area Rapid Transit Trains

    Excessive noise exposure may present a hazard to hearing, cardiovascular and psychosomatic health. Mass transit systems, such as the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system, are potential sources of excessive noise. The purpose of this study was to characterize transit noise and riders\u27 exposure to noise on the BART system using three dosimetry metrics. We made 268 dosimetry measurements on a convenience sample of 51 line segments. Dosimetry measures were modeled using linear and non-linear multiple regression as functions of average velocity, tunnel enclosure, flooring, and wet weather conditions, and presented visually on a map of the BART system. This study provides evidence of levels of hazardous levels of noise exposure in all three dosimetry metrics. L and L measures indicate exposures well above ranges associated with increased cardiovascular and psychosomatic health risks in the published literature. L indicate acute exposures hazardous to adult hearing on about 1% of line segment rides and acute exposures hazardous to child hearing on about 2% of such rides. The noise to which passengers are exposed may be due to train-specific conditions (velocity and flooring), but also to rail conditions (velocity and tunnels). These findings may point at possible remediation (revised speed limits on longer segments and those segments enclosed by tunnels). The findings also suggest that specific rail segments could be improved for noise

    This qualitative study describes the experiences of 16 successful first-generation college students (FGCS) utilizing a theoretical lens, informed significantly by bioecological systems theory (Bronfenbrenner, 1979), which guided our qualitative analyses of interview transcripts to examine the activities, roles, and relationships of these students as they approached the finish line of college graduation. We responded to an omission in the literature on FGCS experiences: although researchers have examined the struggles of first-generation and low-income students, few studies have focused on the experiences of successful students. We offer a developmental paradigm for appreciating undergraduate retention. Recommendations from this investigation support the development and implementation of proactive retention and degree-completion strategies from a strengths-based perspective

    Since newborn screening (NBS) began in the 1960s, technological advances have enabled its expansion to include an increasing number of disorders. Recent developments now make it possible to sequence an infant’s genome relatively quickly and economically. Clinical application of whole-exome and whole-genome sequencing is expanding at a rapid pace but presents many challenges. Its utility in NBS has yet to be demonstrated and its application in the pediatric population requires examination, not only for potential clinical benefits, but also for the unique ethical challenges it presents
