    Transforming Student and Staff Experiences with Active Learning Tutorials in Advanced Chemistry Courses

    In order to increase student engagement and provide more opportunities for students to develop their creativity in the context of three large advanced chemistry courses, we have introduced active learning designs in the courses’ tutorial sessions. The tutorial designs focused on collaborative learning, student-generated content and real-world industrial situations. The tutorial activities, carefully scaffolded, focussed on students generating their own problems from scratch, dealing with situations that mimic what might happen on an industrial design team, and writing a short question following the typical format of a final exam question. The tutorial sessions lasted one hour each, and were delivered during the time lapse of three weeks. Most of the students had none or very limited previous experience with active learning instruction. Despite this, students adapted immediately to the active learning format, displaying good collaborative learning skills and a higher level of engagement and attendance to the sessions with respect to traditional taught tutorials. In the post instruction surveys, students reported an increased positive experience, recognising that the sessions allowed them to apply their knowledge to new situations, and stimulated them to learn more on the topics while practising transferable skills in peer discussions. Lecturers who delivered the sessions with active learning for the first time, reported a positive transformation on their own teaching experience. This article discusses the details of the active learning design, the student perceptions and staff teaching experience, highlighting how active learning can be a positive transformative experience not only for the students but also for the academic staff

    Potts-Percolation-Gauss Model of a Solid

    We study a statistical mechanics model of a solid. Neighboring atoms are connected by Hookian springs. If the energy is larger than a threshold the "spring" is more likely to fail, while if the energy is lower than the threshold the spring is more likely to be alive. The phase diagram and thermodynamic quantities, such as free energy, numbers of bonds and clusters, and their fluctuations, are determined using renormalization-group and Monte-Carlo techniques.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figure

    The nature of multiple electronic orders in skutterudite PrFe_4P_{12} is discussed on the basis of a model with antiferro-quadrupole (AFQ) interaction of \Gamma_3 symmetry. The high-field phase can be reproduced qualitatively provided (i) ferro-type interactions are introduced between the dipoles as well as between the octupoles of localized f-electrons, and (ii) separation is vanishingly small between the \Gamma_1-\Gamma_4^{(1)} crystalline electric field (CEF) levels. The high-field phase can have either the same ordering vector q=(1,0,0) as in the low-field phase, or a different one q=0 depending on the parameters. In the latter case, distortion of the crystal perpendicular to the (111) axis is predicted. The corresponding anomaly in elastic constants should also appear. The electrical resistivity is calculated with account of scattering within the CEF quasi-quartet. It is found that the resistivity as a function of the direction of magnetic field shows a sharp maximum around the (111) axis at low temperatures because of the level crossing.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure

    2D Potts Model Correlation Lengths: Numerical Evidence for ξo=ξd\xi_o = \xi_d at βt\beta_t

    We have studied spin-spin correlation functions in the ordered phase of the two-dimensional qq-state Potts model with q=10q=10, 15, and 20 at the first-order transition point βt\beta_t. Through extensive Monte Carlo simulations we obtain strong numerical evidence that the correlation length in the ordered phase agrees with the exactly known and recently numerically confirmed correlation length in the disordered phase: ξo(βt)=ξd(βt)\xi_o(\beta_t) = \xi_d(\beta_t). As a byproduct we find the energy moments in the ordered phase at βt\beta_t in very good agreement with a recent large qq-expansion.Comment: 11 pages, PostScript. To appear in Europhys. Lett.     Long‐term trends in fruit production in a tropical forest at Ngogo, Kibale National Park, Uganda

    Fruit production in tropical forests varies considerably in space and time, with important implications for frugivorous consumers. Characterizing temporal variation in forest productivity is thus critical for understanding adaptations of tropical forest frugivores, yet long‐term phenology data from the tropics, in particular from African forests, are still scarce. Similarly, as the abiotic factors driving phenology in the tropics are predicted to change with a warming climate, studies documenting the relationship between climatic variables and fruit production are increasingly important. Here, we present data from 19 years of monitoring the phenology of 20 tree species at Ngogo in Kibale National Park, Uganda. Our aims were to characterize short‐ and long‐term trends in productivity and to understand the abiotic factors driving temporal variability in fruit production. Short‐term (month‐to‐month) variability in fruiting was relatively low at Ngogo, and overall fruit production increased significantly through the first half of the study. Among the abiotic variables, we expected to influence phenology patterns (including rainfall, solar irradiance, and average temperature), only average temperature was a significant predictor of monthly fruit production.     The effect of melt composition and oxygen fugacity on manganese partitioning between apatite and silicate melt

    Oxygen fugacity and melt composition are both known to have a strong influence on the partitioning of trace elements between coexisting minerals and melt. Previous work has suggested that Mn partitioning between apatite and silicate melt may be strongly affected by oxygen fugacity and could, therefore, act as an oxybarometer. Here, we present a new study on the partitioning of Mn between apatite and melt at high temperature (1400–1250 °C) and 1 GPa pressure, for various melt compositions and oxygen fugacities (NNO +4.7 to NNO -10). We find that there is no demonstrable variation in the partition coefficient for Mn between apatite and silicate melt (D MnAp-m ) across the range of fO 2 conditions studied here. Instead, we find that D MnAp-m varies significantly with melt composition and that in particular, the proportion of non-bridging oxygens strongly influences partitioning of Mn between apatite and melt. We propose that variations in the Mn content of natural apatite, previously thought to reflect variations in fO 2 , are instead related to the degree of melt polymerisation. These findings are consistent with the results of Mn K-edge XANES spectroscopy, which demonstrate that Mn in coexisting apatite and silicate glass is present predominantly as Mn 2+ regardless of fO 2. Furthermore, XANES spectra from a series of silicate glasses synthesised at various oxygen fugacities demonstrate that Mn 2+ is the predominant species, and that the average Mn oxidation state does not vary over a wide range of fO 2 -T conditions

    Reduction of low- and high-grade cervical abnormalities associated with high uptake of the HPV bivalent vaccine in Scotland

    In Scotland, a national HPV immunisation programme began in 2008 for 12-13 year olds, with a catch-up campaign from 2008-2011 for those under the age of 18. To monitor the impact of HPV immunisation on cervical disease at the population level, a programme of national surveillance was established.  We analysed colposcopy data from a cohort of women born between 1988-1992 who entered the Scottish Cervical Screening Programme (SCSP) and were aged 20-21 in 2008-2012.  By linking datasets from the SCSP and colposcopy services, we observed a significant reduction in diagnoses of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 1 (CIN 1) (RR 0.71, 95% CI 0.58 to 0.87, p=0.0008), CIN 2 (RR 0.5, 95% CI 0.4, 0.63, p<0.0001) and CIN 3 (RR 0.45, 95% CI 0.35 to 0.58, p< 0.0001) for women who received 3 doses of vaccine compared with unvaccinated women.  To our knowledge, this is one of the first studies to show a reduction of low and high grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia associated with high uptake of the HPV bivalent vaccine at the population level. These data are very encouraging for countries that have achieved high HPV vaccine uptake
