Phase diagram of CeFeAsPO obtained from electric resistivity, magnetization, and specific heat measurements
We performed a systematic study on the properties of CeFeAsPO
() by electrical resistivity, magnetization and specific heat
measurements. The c-axis lattice constant decreases significantly with
increasing P content, suggesting a remarkable chemical pressure. The Fe-3d
electrons show the enhanced metallic behavior upon P-doping and undergo a
magnetic quantum phase transition around . Meanwhile, the Ce-4f
electrons develop a ferromagnetic order near the same doping level. The
ferromagnetic order is vanishingly small around . The data suggest a
heavy-fermion-like behavior as . No superconductivity is observed
down to 2 K. Our results show the ferromagnetic ordered state as an
intermediate phase intruding between the antiferromagnetic bad metal and the
nonmagnetic heavy fermion metal and support the cerium-containing iron
pnictides as a unique layered Kondo lattice system.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, text and figures revised, references added
57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetic measurements of oxygen deficient LaFeAsO
We report on the magnetic behavior of oxygen deficient LaFeAsO1-x (x-0.10)
compound, prepared by one-step synthesis, which crystallizes in the tetragonal
(S.G. P4/nmm) structure at room temperature. Resistivity measurements show a
strong anomaly near 150 K, which is ascribed to the spin density wave (SDW)
instability. On the other hand, dc magnetization data shows paramagnetic-like
features down to 5 K, with an effective moment of 0.83 mB/Fe. 57Fe Mossbauer
studies (MS) have been performed at 95 and 200 K. The spectra at both
temperatures are composed of two sub-spectra. At 200 K the major one (88%), is
almost a singlet, and corresponds to those Fe nuclei, which have two oxygen
ions in their close vicinity. The minor one, with a large quadrupole splitting,
corresponds to Fe nuclei, which have vacancies in their immediate neighborhood.
The spectrum at 95 K, exhibits a broadened magnetic split major (84%)
sub-spectrum and a very small magnetic splitting in the minor subspectrum. The
relative intensities of the subspectra facilitate in estimating the actual
amount of oxygen vacancies in the compound to be 7.0(5)%, instead of the
nominal LaFeAsO0.90. These results, when compared with reported 57Fe MS of
non-superconducting LaFeAsO and superconducting LaFeAsO0.9F0.1, confirm that
the studied LaFeAsO0.93 is a superconductivity-magnetism crossover compound of

To What Extent Iron-Pnictide New Superconductors Have Been Clarified: A Progress Report
In this review, the authors present a summary of experimental reports on
newly discovered iron-based superconductors as they were known at the end of
2008. At the same time, this paper is intended to be useful for experimenters
to know the current status of these superconductors. The authors introduce
experimental results that reveal basic physical properties in the normal and
superconducting states. The similarities and differences between iron-pnictide

Distorted magnetic orders and electronic structures of tetragonal FeSe from first-principles
We use the state-of-the-arts density-functional-theory method to study
various magnetic orders and their effects on the electronic structures of the
FeSe. Our calculated results show that, for the spins of the single Fe layer,
the striped antiferromagnetic orders with distortion are more favorable in
total energy than the checkerboard antiferromagnetic orders with tetragonal
symmetry, which is consistent with known experimental data, and the inter-layer
magnetic interaction is very weak. We investigate the electronic structures and
magnetic property of the distorted phases. We also present our calculated spin
coupling constants and discuss the reduction of the Fe magnetic moment by
quantum many-body effects. These results are useful to understand the
structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of FeSe, and may have some
helpful implications to other FeAs-based materials
Feasibility of intensity-modulated and image-guided radiotherapy for locally advanced esophageal cancer
BACKGROUND:In this study the feasibility of intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and tomotherapy-based image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) for locally advanced esophageal cancer was assessed.METHODS:A retrospective study of ten patients with locally advanced esophageal cancer who underwent concurrent chemotherapy with IMRT (1) and IGRT (9) was conducted. The gross tumor volume was treated to a median dose of 70Gy (62.4-75Gy).RESULTS:At a median follow-up of 14months (1-39 months), three patients developed local failures, six patients developed distant metastases, and complications occurred in two patients (1 tracheoesophageal fistula, 1 esophageal stricture requiring repeated dilatations). No patients developed grade 3-4 pneumonitis or cardiac complications.CONCLUSIONS:IMRT and IGRT may be effective for the treatment of locally advanced esophageal cancer with acceptable complications.This item is part of the UA Faculty Publications collection. Partial volume correction strategies for quantitative FDG PET in oncology
Purpose: Quantitative accuracy of positron emission tomography (PET) is affected by partial volume effects resulting in increased underestimation of the standardized uptake value (SUV) with decreasing tumour volume. The purpose of the present study was to assess accuracy and precision of different partial volume correction (PVC) methods. Methods: Three methods for PVC were evaluated: (1) inclusion of the point spread function (PSF) within the reconstruction, (2) iterative deconvolution of PET images and (3) calculation of spill-in and spill-out factors based on tumour masks. Simulations were based on a mathematical phantom with tumours of different sizes and shapes. Phantom experiments were performed in 2-D mode using the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) NU2 image quality phantom containing six differently sized spheres. Clinical studies (2-D mode) included a test-retest study consisting of 10 patients with stage IIIB and IV non-small cell lung cancer and a response monitoring study consisting of 15 female breast cancer patients. In all studies tumour or sphere volumes of interest (VOI) were generated using VOI based on adaptive relative thresholds. Results: Simulations and experiments provided similar results. All methods were able to accurately recover true SUV within 10% for spheres equal to and larger than 1 ml. Incidence of cerebral metastases in patients treated with trastuzumab for metastatic breast cancer
Trastuzumab is an effective treatment for patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) that overexpresses HER-2. A high incidence of brain metastases (BM) has been noted in patients receiving trastuzumab. A retrospective chart review was conducted of 100 patients commencing trastuzumab for metastatic breast cancer from July 1999 to December 2002, at the Christie Hospital. Seven patients were excluded; five patients developed central nervous system metastases prior to starting trastuzumab, and inadequate data were available for two. Out of the remaining 93 patients, 23 (25%) have developed BM to date. In all, 46 patients have died, and of these 18 (39%) have been diagnosed with BM prior to death. Of the 23 patients developing BM, 18 (78%) were hormone receptor negative and 18 (78%) had visceral disease. Univariate analysis showed a significant association between the development of cerebral disease and both hormone receptor status and the presence of visceral disease. In conclusion, a high proportion of patients with MBC treated with trastuzumab develop symptomatic cerebral metastases. HER-2-positive breast cancer may have a predilection for the brain, or trastuzumab therapy may change the disease pattern by prolonging survival. New strategies to address this problem require investigation in this group of patients
How to evaluate the risk/benefit of trimodality therapy in locally advanced non-small-cell lung cancer
The trimodality approach represented by concurrent chemoradiotherapy followed by surgical resection is a highly effective, but potentially toxic therapy for locally advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In this review, we discuss the current status of this therapy in patients with mediastinal node-positive (N2) stage III NSCLC or superior sulcus tumor, and present an overview of the principles for optimisation of the risk/benefit. Numerous clinical questions remain, and enrolment of patients into well-designed clinical trials should be encouraged
