    Alloy nitrides (U,Zr), (U,Ce), and (U,Y) were prepared and exposed to vacuum at temperatures to 1700 C (1973 K) and compared with pure UN. Weight loss data and physical observations showed that the alloy samples were more stable than UN. In weight loss, (U,Zr)N was 3 times as stable as UN at 1600 C (1873 K) for 100 hr at 0.000002 torr (0.000266n/sq.m.)

    Background: IPS-1/MAVS/VISA/Cardif is an adaptor protein that plays a crucial role in the induction of interferons in response to viral infection. In the initial stage of the intracellular antiviral response two RNA helicases, retinoic acid inducible gene-I (RIG-I) and melanoma differentiation-association gene 5 (MDA5), are independently able to bind viral RNA in the cytoplasm. The 62 kDa protein IPS-1/MAVS/VISA/Cardif contains an N-terminal caspase activation and recruitment (CARD) domain that associates with the CARD regions of RIG-I and MDA5, ultimately leading to the induction of type I interferons. As a first step towards understanding the molecular basis of this important adaptor protein we have undertaken structural studies of the IPS-1 MAVS/VISA/Cardif CARD region. Results: The crystal structure of human IPS-1/MAVS/VISA/Cardif CARD has been determined to 2.1 angstrom resolution. The protein was expressed and crystallized as a maltose-binding protein (MBP) fusion protein. The MBP and IPS-1 components each form a distinct domain within the structure. IPS-1/MAVS/VISA/Cardif CARD adopts a characteristic six-helix bundle with a Greek-key topology and, in common with a number of other known CARD structures, contains two major polar surfaces on opposite sides of the molecule. One face has a surface-exposed, disordered tryptophan residue that may explain the poor solubility of untagged expression constructs. Conclusion: The IPS-1/MAVS/VISA/Cardif CARD domain adopts the classic CARD fold with an asymmetric surface charge distribution that is typical of CARD domains involved in homotypic protein-protein interactions. The location of the two polar areas on IPS-1/MAVS/VISA/Cardif CARD suggest possible types of associations that this domain makes with the two CARD domains of MDA5 or RIG-I. The N-terminal CARD domains of RIG-I and MDA5 share greatest sequence similarity with IPS-1/MAVS/VISA/Cardif CARD and this has allowed modelling of their structures.     Testing Theoretical Evolutionary Models with AB Dor C and the Initial Mass Function

    We assess the constraints on the evolutionary models of young low-mass objects that are provided by the measurements of the companion AB Dor C by Close and coworkers and by a new comparison of model-derived IMFs of star-forming regions to the well-calibrated IMF of the solar neighborhood. After performing an independent analysis of Close's imaging and spectroscopic data for AB Dor C, we find that AB Dor C is not detected at a significant level (SN 1.2) in the SDI images when one narrow-band image is subtracted from another, but that it does appear in the individual SDI frames as well as the images at JHK. Using the age of 75-150 Myr for AB Dor from Luhman, Stauffer, & Mamajek, the luminosity predicted by the models of Chabrier & Baraffe is consistent with the value that we estimate. We measure a spectral type of M6+/-1 from the K-band spectrum of AB Dor C, which is earlier than the value of M8+/-1 from Close and is consistent with the model predictions when a dwarf temperature scale is adopted. In a test of these models at much younger ages, we show that the low-mass IMFs that they produce for star-forming regions are similar to the IMF of the solar neighborhood. If the masses of the low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in these IMFs of star-forming regions were underestimated by a factor of two as suggested by Close, then the IMF characterizing the current generation of Galactic star formation would have to be radically different from the IMF of the solar neighborhood.Comment: 15 pages, accepted to the Astrophysical Journa

    Performance tests of signature extension algorithms

    Comparative tests were performed on seven signature extension algorithms to evaluate their effectiveness in correcting for changes in atmospheric haze and sun angle in a LANDSAT scene. Four of the algorithms were cluster matching, and two were maximum likelihood algorithms. The seventh algorithm determined the haze level in both training and recognition segments and used a set of tables calculated from an atmospheric model to determine the affine transformation that corrects the training signatures for changes in sun angle and haze level. Three of the algorithms were tested on a simulated data set, and all of the algorithms were tested on consecutive-day data
