The New Zealand Jury
In New Zealand, the recent history of the jury has been one of fairly steady decline. This is particularly so of the civil jury, which has become virtually extinct with little realistic prospect of revival
Nurse Practitioners Incivility Experiences and Intent to Leave Clinical Practice
Nurse practitioner (NP) incivility is a problem for the profession of nursing and interferes with the establishment of a culture of respect and safety. Incivility affects healthy work environments, impedes patient safety and collaboration, and causes physical and psychological stressors for NPs. The purpose of this quantitative study, guided by Lazarus and Folkman’s appraisal theory, was to determine if there was a relationship between (a) frequency of incivility and a nurse practitioners’ intent to leave clinical practice, (b) the source of incivility and a nurse practitioners’ intent to leave clinical practice,(c) the frequency of incivility and NPs intent to leave clinical practice mediated by years of clinical practice, and (d) frequency of incivility and the NPs intent to leave clinical practice mediated by the effect of work-related stress. There were 158 study participants who completed the Guidroz’ Nursing Incivility Scale (NIS), Gray-Toft and Anderson’s Nursing Stress Scale, and the Turnover Intention Scale. Data were analyzed using linear regression and ANOVA, which showed that NIS was negatively associated with NPs intent to leave. There was a significant relationship between patient and family NIS and frequency of NP stress. The number of years of NP practicing was not significant. Future research should be conducted using a qualitative or mixed methods approach with a larger NP participant size to gain insight into a NPs incivility experience, sources of incivility, and years of clinical practice. Although incivility in the workplace is common, how incivility influences NP communication and work-related stress can gain insight into NPs leaving their organization which can effect positive social change
Establishing a Chronology of Late Quaternary Glacial Advances in the Cordillera de Talamanca, Costa Rica
Little research has focused on glacial events in the tropics. Providing an absolute glacial chronology in Costa Rica will build a foundation for future glacial chronologies and paleoclimate reconstructions in the highlands of Central America. Evidence of past glaciation, including moraines and glacial lakes, is preserved within formerly glaciated valleys in the Cordillera de Talamanca. Orvis and Horn (2000) constrained deglaciation ages of the most recent glacial event in the Cordillera de Talamanca based on radiocarbon dates of glacial lake sediments. Radiocarbon ages indicated complete deglaciation after 12.4 ka cal BP but before 9.7 ka cal BP (Orvis and Horn, 2000). This research aims to date the formation ages of moraines using cosmogenic 36Cl [chlorine-36] surface exposure dating. Exposure ages provide absolute age constraints on the timing of glacial events within the Cordillera de Talamanca, Costa Rica. Cosmogenic 36Cl exposure ages indicate a Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) event ~21–18 ka, which is synchronous with the global LGM. Ages also indicate periods of glacial retreat and stillstands ~18–10 ka. An elevation and age comparison suggests similar timing and extent of LGM advance between two valleys on opposite sides of the mountain range. These results improve understanding of the timing of glacial events in the tropics, which is of critical importance for reconstructing regional and global climate patterns
Introduction: Women and the silent screen
What are the gaps in current film histories? Who has been forgotten and why? How can we write histories of cinema that are more inclusive while not eliding processes of exclusion or other dynamics of power? This essay demonstrates the significance of gender in relation to early cinema
Rare Material in Academic Libraries
Purpose – This paper summarizes the importance of rare materials for academic libraries including developments since the arrival of the Internet and the effects of declining library budgets.
Design/methodology/approach – The authors reviewed the literature on the subject coupled with their experiences with collection development.
Findings – Collecting rare materials remains important for scholarly research though harder to justify during a period of budget stringency. Academic libraries should discover creative ways to discover and add rare materials to their collections. Rare materials require special expertise in their acquisition, processing, storage, and use. Digitization is making rare materials more accessible but cannot substitute for the use of the originals in all cases. Practical implications – The authors provide a summary of recent thought on the status of rare materials in academic libraries for libraries that include such collections or for those interested in increasing their holdings of rare materials.
Originality/value – The paper provides a summary of recent trends in collecting rare materials in academic libraries
‘A productive and happy collaboration’: maximising impact through project design
This case study describes a highly collaborative project created to develop an online self-assessment tool that offers students the opportunity to plan their preparedness to enter the work place named the Preparation for Placement Assessment Tool. The aim of the project was to develop an artefact that aidsall students to think about and prepare for placements, and more broadly to be work-ready. It also aims to help disabled students to identify and manage their individual needs. Working in collaboration with students is offered as an effective strategy for improving project outcomes and managing the tensions for academics of balancing research, teaching, learning and scholarly activities. This paper discusses the project background, design and delivery, which includes the engagement of a diverse mix of students, and the practice research methodologies used. Discussion focuses on the project’s impact, particularly on the students involved. Four key factors: student power, methodology, the use of funding and slow burn are identified as significant for success

Product Liability Issues in Real Estate Brokerage
The legal environment for real estate brokers is moving inexorably toward the doctrine of strict liability in a product liability context. The agency relationship model currently popular in real estate brokerage may not be able to withstand this threat. A recommendation is made that the industry move toward a market-making role which lies outside the chain of distribution of the real estate product. By moving out of the distribution channel, brokers may be able to revert to a "due care" standard performance.
