    The big-eyed frogfish Antennarius radiosus Garman, 1896 is confirmed as a valid record for the Azores. A revision of the historical records confirms three valid species of frogfishes from the Azores (A. radiosus, A. nummifer, Histrio histrio). Two species (A. senegalensis, A. pardalis or A. multiocellatus) require confirmation

    Marine Fishes of the Azores : annotated checklist and bibliography : a catalogue of the Azorean marine ichthyodiversity

    A list of the marine fishes of the Azores is presented. The list is based on a review of the literature combined with an examination of selected specimens available from collections of Azorean fishes deposited in museums, including the collection of fish at the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries of the University of the Azores (Horta). Personal information collected over several years is also incorporated. The geographic area considered is the Economic Exclusive Zone of the Azores. The list is organised in Classes, Orders and Families according to Nelson (1994). The scientific names are, for the most part, those used in Fishes of the North-eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean (FNAM) (Whitehead et al. 1989), and they are organised in alphabetical order within the families. Clofnam numbers (see Hureau & Monod 1979) are included for reference. Information is given if the species is not cited for the Azores in FNAM. Vernacular names are always both presented in Portuguese (Azorean names) and English. Synonyms, misspellings and misidentifications found in the literature in reference to the occurrence of species in the Azores are also quoted. The 460 species listed, belong to 142 families; 12 species are cited for the first time for the Azores. Details are given for 23 other species cited for the first time for the Azores in the Red Book of Portuguese Vertebrates (ICN 1993). Fifty-four ambiguous and/or exceptional occurrences are included in an appendix. A second appendix contains the remaining corrections to the checklist of fish included in ICN (1993). The paper concludes with a synthesis and an annotated indexed bibliography of the marine fishes of the Azores.     Zoantharians (Hexacorallia: Zoantharia) Associated with Cold-Water Corals in the Azores Region: New Species and Associations in the Deep Sea

    Zoantharians are a group of cnidarians that are often found in association with marine invertebrates, including corals, in shallow and deep-sea environments. However, little is known about deep-sea zoantharian taxonomy, specificity and nature of their associations with their coral hosts. In this study, analyses of molecular data (mtDNA COI, 16S, and 12S rDNA) coupled with ecological and morphological characteristics were used to examine zoantharian specimens associated with cold-water corals (CWC) at depths between 110 and 800 m from seamounts and island slopes in the Azores region. The zoantharians examined were found living in association with stylasterids, antipatharians and octocorals. From the collected specimens, four new species were identified: (1) Epizoanthus martinsae sp. n. associated with the antipatharian Leiopathes sp.; (2) Parazoanthus aliceae sp. n. associated with the stylasterid Errina dabneyi (Pourtalès, 1871); (3) Zibrowius alberti sp. n. associated with octocorals of the family Primnoidae [Paracalyptrophora josephinae (Lindström, 1877)] and the family Plexauridae (Dentomuricea aff. meteor Grasshoff, 1977); (4) Hurlizoanthus hirondelleae sp. n. associated with the primnoid octocoral Candidella imbricata (Johnson, 1862). In addition, based on newly collected material, morphological and molecular data and phylogenic reconstruction, the zoantharian Isozoanthus primnoidus Carreiro-Silva, Braga-Henriques, Sampaio, de Matos, Porteiro & Ocaña, 2011, associated with the primnoid octocoral Callogorgia verticillata (Pallas, 1766), was reclassified as Zibrowius primnoidus comb. nov. The zoantharians, Z. primnoidus comb. nov., Z. alberti sp. n., and H. hirondelleae sp. n. associated with octocorals showed evidence of a parasitic relationship, where the zoantharian progressively eliminates gorgonian tissue and uses the gorgonian axis for structure and support, and coral sclerites for protection. In contrast, the zoantharian P. aliceae sp. n. associated with the stylasterid E. dabneyi and the zoantharian E. martinsae sp. n. associated with the antipatharian Leiopathes sp., appear to use the coral host only as support with no visible damage to the host.     O território marítimo adjacente ao arquipélago dos Açores congrega uma elevada diversidade de ambientes. Por essa razão, existem hoje espectativas legítimas de que o mar possa vir a desempenhar um papel mais importante no desenvolvimento económico das populações que habitam a Região Autónoma dos Açores e, consequentemente, de Portugal. A diversidade marinha dos Açores representa, sem dúvida, um manancial de oportunidades para o desenvolvimento de novos usos do mar e, consequentemente, de novas oportunidades de negócio e de desenvolvimento socioeconómico, desde que seja garantida a sustentabilidade dos ecossistemas. Aos usos tradicionais do mar, como os casos mais óbvios da pesca ou dos transportes marítimos, somam-se outras atividades emergentes, como sejam as marítimo- turísticas, onde se destaca a observação de cetáceos e o mergulho recreativo, a biotecnologia, ou mesmo a investigação científica oceânica. De facto, as potencialidades do mar em torno do arquipélago dos Açores têm vindo a materializar-se através de novas atividades e interesses, como sejam o mergulho com tubarões azuis e rinquins (anequins), por exemplo, ou a recolha de material audiovisual, para a produção de documentários e de publicações sobre a vida marinha. Considera-se assim que o ambiente marinho dos Açores constitui um recurso estratégico, ao qual as autoridades da Região Autónoma dos Açores estão atentas, apostando na sua divulgação, gestão e conservação.     Three specimens of Grammicolepis brachiusculus were caught by the commercial bottom hand and longline fisheries off Terceira and Faial Islands, Azores Archipelago. This is the first record of the species for the region, and one of few ever caught in the NE Atlantic

Fish size and behaviour inside the structure and in the surrounding area are described.     In the late 19th and early 20th centuries Prince Albert I of Monaco promoted 13 cruises that sampled the Azorean waters. During those cruises a total of 2624 nominal marine species were reported in the area. This work assembles the biological data provided by these expeditions to the Azores in a geo-referenced database. Faunal lists for seven invertebrate groups (Echiura, Sipuncula, Cephalopoda, Annelida, Brachiopoda, Chaetognatha and Echinodermata) are compiled. The checklist includes 331 nominal species, of which 310 are valid names: 1 echiurid; 11 sipunculids; 32 cephalopods; 130 annelids; 4 brachiopods; 14 chaetognaths; and 118 echinoderms. Eighteen percent are synonyms, 29% of the species were allocated to a different genus, 2.8% were misspellings and corrections due to gender or concordance rules, 0.8% were specific epithets allocated to sub-specific level or vice-versa, the rest were validated directly (without any modification in their nomenclature)

    Advanced coatings play an important role in a wide range of industrial applications. These coatings are commonly used in machining tools due to their high hardness and wear resistance, but also can be applied in jewellery and decorative purposes. Deposition techniques have seen a strong evolution as result of the directly related devices, control evolution and software. Several variants have been developed around the main techniques: arc evaporation and sputtering. The coatings produced present significant differences in their characteristics, namely in terms of structure, mechanical properties and surface morphology. Depending on the substrate material and application, the deposition process needs to be properly selected, providing the particular characteristics requested.     A critical review on the numerical simulation related to Physical Vapour Deposition

    Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) is a process usually used for the production of advanced coatings regarding its application in several industrial and current products, such as optical lens, moulds and dies, decorative parts or tools. This process has several variants due to its strong evolution along the last decades. The process is commonly assisted by plasma, creating a particular low pressure and medium temperature atmosphere, which is responsible for the transition of atomic particles between the target and the parts to be coated into a vacuum reactor. Several parameters are directly affecting the deposition, namely the substrate temperature, pressure inside the reactor, assisting gases used, type of current, power supply, bias, substrate and target materials, samples holder and corresponding rotation, deposition time, among others. Many mathematical models have been developed in order to allow the generation of numerical simulation applications, trying to combine parameters and expect the corresponding results. Numerical simulation applications were created around the mathematical models previously developed, which can play an important role in the prediction of the coating properties and structure.     New occurrences of Corallium spp. (Octocorallia, Coralliidae) in the Central Northeast Atlantic

    Corallium niobe Bayer, 1964 and Corallium tricolor (Johnson, 1899) are reported as new records from the central Northeast Atlantic. C. niobe was caught in the Azores and C. tricolor on the slope of the Irving Seamount (South Azores Seamounts). The presence of Corallium johnsoni Gray, 1860 in Azorean waters is confirmed. The sub-tropical Macaronesian islands and seamounts appear to be an important hot-spot for Corallium spp. Most colonies have been collected on seamounts and island slopes around Madeira, Canaries, Azores and the Cape Verde archipelagos. In the Azores most of these corals live below the normal depth of commercial fishing operations and are unlikely to be severely impacted by this activity
