    A novel porous media-based approach to outflow boundary resistances of 1D arterial blood flow models

    In this paper we introduce a novel method for prescribing terminal boundary conditions in one-dimensional arterial flow networks. This is carried out by coupling the terminal arterial vessel with a poro-elastic tube, representing the flow resistance offered by microcirculation. The performance of the proposed porous media-based model has been investigated through several different numerical examples. First, we investigate model parameters that have a profound influence on the flow and pressure distributions of the system. The simulation results have been compared against the waveforms generated by three elements (RCR) Windkessel model. The proposed model is also integrated into a realistic arterial tree, and the results obtained have been compared against experimental data at different locations of the network. The accuracy and simplicity of the proposed model demonstrates that it can be an excellent alternative for the existing models

    Determinants of myocardial energetics and efficiency in symptomatic hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

    Next to hypertrophy, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is characterized by alterations in myocardial energetics. A small number of studies have shown that myocardial external efficiency (MEE), defined by external work (EW) in relation to myocardial oxidative metabolism (MVO2), is reduced. The present study was conducted to identify determinants of MEE in patients with HCM by use of dynamic positron emission tomography (PET) and cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMR). Twenty patients with HCM (12 men, mean age: 55.2 +/- 13.9 years) and 11 healthy controls (7 men, mean age: 48.1 +/- 10 years) were studied with [C-11]acetate PET to assess MVO2. CMR was performed to determine left ventricular (LV) volumes and mass (LVM). Univariate and multivariate analyses were employed to determine independent predictors of myocardial efficiency. Between study groups, MVO2 (controls: 0.12 +/- 0.04 ml center dot min(-1)center dot g(-1), HCM: 0.13 +/- 0.05 ml center dot min(-1)center dot g(-1), p = 0.64) and EW (controls: 9,139 +/- 2,484 mmHg center dot ml, HCM: 9,368 +/- 2,907 mmHg center dot ml, p = 0.83) were comparable, whereas LVM was significantly higher (controls: 99 +/- 21 g, HCM: 200 +/- 76 g, p < 0.001) and MEE was decreased in HCM patients (controls: 35 +/- 8%, HCM: 21 +/- 10%, p < 0.001). MEE was related to stroke volume (SV), LV outflow tract gradient, NH2-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and serum free fatty acid levels (all p < 0.05). Multivariate analysis revealed that SV ( = 0.74, p < 0.001) and LVM ( = -0.43, p = 0.013) were independently related to MEE. HCM is characterized by unaltered MVO2, impaired EW generation per gram of myocardial tissue and subsequent deteriorated myocardial efficiency.     Effect of flexoelectricity and order electricity on defect cores in nematic droplets

    Macroscopic polarization, induced in a strongly deformed nematic director field, is shown to strongly affect the stability of defect structures. We present a numerical study which addresses the role of flexoelectricity and order electricity in confined nematic liquid crystals, more specifically in nematic droplets with planar and homeotropic surface anchoring. Electrostatic potential induced by flexo- and order electricity are calculated in the droplets taking into the account full anisotropy of the nematic director profile. Potentials as high as 1 V are found in 200 nm droplets with flexoelectric constant e = 40 pC m-1. Spatial profiles of contributions to the total free energy are calculated to identify flexo- and order elasticity relevant regions. For different flexoelectric coupling strengths and different anchoring strengths, changes in the core of the defects are examined. Their stability is discussed. Finally, flexo- and order electricity driven transitions between point defect, ring defect and axial structure are demonstrated in homeotropic droplets. © 2011 The Royal Society of Chemistry

    Complex field-stabilised nematic defect structures in Laguerre-Gaussian optical tweezers

    Novel optical field-stabilised defect structures are presented in nematic liquid crystals as produced by Laguerre-Gaussian optical beams. Our modelling study is based on the phenomenological free energy approach. To mimic generic experiments, Laguerre-Gaussian optical beams of various helical indices are applied to a nematic cell. The symmetry of these field-stabilised nematic structures is directly determined by the beam indices. We show that the structures can also be tuned by the beam intensity and the strength of the nematic elastic constant. Finally, local intensity-induced control of the nematic order via absorption of the beam is demonstrated as a complementary mechanism for producing and tuning the nematic field-stabilised structures. © 2012 The Royal Society of Chemistry

    Blue phases as templates for 3D colloidal photonic crystals

    We examine the possibilities to use the intrinsic 3D defect networks in blue phases I and II as arrays of trapping sites for colloidal particles. Our approach based on the phenomenological Landau-de Gennes description and topological theory has proven to be extremely useful in dealing with nematic colloids. A perturbed orientational order leads to effective anisotropic long range inter-particle coupling and consequently to numerous organizations of colloidal particles not present in simple liquids. Recent developments that led to the blue phases with extended stability range make them more attractive for use. In these phases the competition between nematic ordering and intrinsic tendency to form double twisted deformations yields complex director patterns and disclination networks. The spatially deformed order that mediates the attraction of particles to the network sets the ground for a possible self-assembling of 3D superstructures with extended stability ranges. Here we first describe the trapping mechanism on the case of a single discilination line and then use the results to demonstrate the trapping in the blue phase II. Effects of particle sizes ranging from submicron to 50 nanometers are examined. The assembling in blue phases is expected to form photonic crystals that can be easily manipulated via affecting the liquid crystal matrix and/or colloidal particles. © 2010 SPIE

    Prevalence and clinical significance of anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies in juvenile idiopathic arthritis

    BACKGROUND: Antibodies against cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) are considered to be specific for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). OBJECTIVE: To assess the clinical significance of anti-CCP in a cohort of patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). METHODS: Anti-CCP were tested by an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in serum samples from 109 patients with JIA (30 boys, 79 girls), with a mean age of 8.7 years (range 0.6-20.3) and mean disease duration of 3.6 years (range 3 months to 15.6 years). As control groups, anti-CCP were also tested in sera of 30 healthy children, 25 patients with juvenile onset systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and 50 adult patients (30 with RA, 20 with SLE). RESULTS: Positive anti-CCP values were found in sera of two patients with JIA (2%), one with polyarthritis, and one with oligoarthritis. Statistical analysis showed that anti-CCP were not associated with the presence of antinuclear antibodies, raised erythrocyte sedimentation rate, or erosions. In the control groups, none of the patients with juvenile onset SLE and only one of 20 adults with SLE were positive for anti-CCP, but 19/30 (63%) adults with RA showed anti-CCP positivity.
