Using history in the creation of organizational identity
Organizations frequently draw on history as a resource, for instance when attempting to establish or maintain identity claims. However, little has been done to review the advantages and problems of such use of history and it is not clear how using history impacts on the appreciation of history itself and, ultimately, on the insights that may be gained when engaging with the past. To begin to address these questions we distinguish two related uses of history as a resource for organizational identity: as a means of committing external audiences and, as a way of finding inward commitment. We theorize these two uses by drawing on speech act theory to develop a taxonomy of uses of history and to elaborate the opportunities and challenges that come when historical narratives are fashioned in the service of identity. We conclude with a further insight gained from speech act theory that suggests an engagement with history that requires sensitivity to prevailing conventions at the moment of these historical acts. We argue that appreciation of asynchronous historical conditions and contexts affords new insights through the difference these pose to current and instrumental concerns that otherwise guide the fashioning and interpretation of historical 'facts.
Noncommutative Lorentz Symmetry and the Origin of the Seiberg-Witten Map
We show that the noncommutative Yang-Mills field forms an irreducible
representation of the (undeformed) Lie algebra of rigid translations, rotations
and dilatations. The noncommutative Yang-Mills action is invariant under
combined conformal transformations of the Yang-Mills field and of the
noncommutativity parameter \theta. The Seiberg-Witten differential equation
results from a covariant splitting of the combined conformal transformations
and can be computed as the missing piece to complete a covariant conformal
transformation to an invariance of the action.Comment: 20 pages, LaTeX. v2: Streamlined proofs and extended discussion of

Identifying Arkansas Food Desert Blocks Suitable for a Peer-to-Peer Modeled Food Redistribution Program
Abstract
Nearly 10% of Americans reside in low-income urban food deserts which are low-income areas that lack access to affordable and nutritious foods. Food deserts in Arkansas contribute to a food insecurity rate above the national average, making it one of the most food insecure states in the country. Increased internet usage and consumer interest in sharing based companies contribute to the idea of a sharing, or peer-to-peer (P2P) style food redistribution program. The objective of this study is to identify which of the 186,211census blocks in the state of Arkansas are food deserts and best suited for and in the most need, based on an identified set of criteria, of a P2P food redistribution program. A multi-criteria decision analysis was conducted using population, internet access, vulnerable communities, and vehicle availability as criteria. Results suggest that based upon the close proximity of priority areas, transportation access, ethnic/racial diversity, and the number of possible collection locations, Pulaski County be targeted for a P2P food redistribution pilot program
Transdifferentiation of blood-derived human adult endothelial progenitor cells into functionally active cardiomyocytes
Background - Further to promoting angiogenesis, cell therapy may be an approach for cardiac regeneration. Recent studies suggest that progenitor cells can transdifferentiate into other lineages. However, the transdifferentiation potential of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) is unknown
Doubly resonant optical nanoantenna arrays for polarization resolved measurements of surface-enhanced Raman scattering
We report that rhomb-shaped metal nanoantenna arrays support multiple
plasmonic resonances, making them favorable bio-sensing substrates. Besides the
two localized plasmonic dipole modes associated with the two principle axes of
the rhombi, the sample supports an additional grating-induced surface plasmon
polariton resonance. The plasmonic properties of all modes are carefully
studied by far-field measurements together with numerical and analytical
calculations. The sample is then applied to surface-enhanced Raman scattering
measurements. It is shown to be highly efficient since two plasmonic resonances
of the structure were simultaneously tuned to coincide with the excitation and
the emission wave- length in the SERS experiment. The analysis is completed by
measuring the impact of the polarization angle on the SERS signal.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure
Fracture hospitalizations between years 2000 and 2007 in Switzerland: a trend analysis
Summary: In Switzerland, the total number and incidence of hospitalizations for major osteoporotic fractures increased between years 2000 and 2007, while hospitalizations due to hip fracture decreased. The cost impact of shorter hospital stays was offset by the increasing cost per day of hospitalization. Introduction: The aim of the study was to establish the trends and epidemiological characteristics of hospitalizations for major osteoporotic fractures (MOF) between years 2000 and 2007 in Switzerland. Methods: Sex- and age-specific trends in the number and crude and age-standardized incidences of hospitalized MOF (hip, clinical spine, distal radius, and proximal humerus) in women and men aged ≥45years were analyzed, together with the number of hospital days and cost of hospitalization, based on data from the Swiss Federal Statistical Office hospital database and population statistics. Results: Between 2000 and 2007, the absolute number of hospitalizations for MOF increased by 15.9% in women and 20.0% in men, mainly due to an increased number of non-hip fractures (+37.7% in women and +39.7% in men). Hospitalizations for hip fractures were comparatively stable (−1.8% in women and +3.3% in men). In a rapidly aging population, in which the number of individuals aged ≥45years grew by 11.1% (women) and 14.6% (men) over the study period, the crude and age-standardized incidences of hospitalizations decreased for hip fractures and increased for non-hip MOF, both in women and men. The length of hospital stay decreased for all MOF in women and men, the cost impact of which was offset by an increase in the daily costs of hospitalization. Conclusions: Between years 2000 and 2007, hospitalizations for MOF continued to increase in Switzerland, driven by an increasing number and incidence of hospitalizations for non-hip fractures, although the incidence of hip fractures has decline
