Reducing Polarization Mode Dispersion With Controlled Polarization Rotations
One of the fundamental limitations to high bit rate, long distance,
telecommunication in optical fibers is Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD). Here
we introduce a conceptually new method to reduce PMD in optical fibers by
carrying out controlled rotations of polarization at predetermined locations
along the fiber. The distance between these controlled polarization rotations
must be less than both the beat length and the mode coupling length of the
fiber. This method can also be combined with the method in which the fiber is
spun while it drawn. The incidence of imperfections on the efficiency of the
method is analysed.Comment: 4 page
Developmental Angiogenesis: Quail Embryonic Vasculature
We have examined the segregation and early morphogenesis of the embryonic vasculature by using a monoclonal antibody for immunofluorescence and by scanning electron microscopy. This antibody labels the presumptive endothelial eel ls (PECs) as they segregate from mesoderm. Similar embryos prepared for SEM revealed finer details of how these segregated cells interact to form the rudiments of the major blood vessels. Here we concentrate on the development of the dorsal aortae and the posterior cardinal veins. The dorsal aortae form from single PECs which segregate from the lateral mesoderm and aggregate into a loose cord ventral to the somites. These cells become more closely associated and a lumen forms. The posterior cardinal veins form from a loose plexus of cells segregated from the lateral mesoderm on its dorsal surface. These cells become intimately associated with the Wolffian ducts
Political trials and the suppression of popular radicalism in England, 1799-1820
This chapter examines the decision-making process between the Home Office and the government’s law officers in prosecuting individuals for sedition and treason in the period 1799–1820. The term state trial suggests a more centralised and government-led repression of popular radicalism than the process was in practice. Provincial reformers also faced the complex layers of their local justice system, which was more loyalist, committed to stamping out political radicalism. The trial of the “Thirty Eight” Manchester radicals in June 1812 demonstrates the mutable definitions of treason, sedition and processes of justice in the theatre of the court.Peer reviewe
Tuning the exciton g-factor in single InAs/InP quantum dots
Photoluminescence data from single, self-assembled InAs/InP quantum dots in
magnetic fields up to 7 T are presented. Exciton g-factors are obtained for
dots of varying height, corresponding to ground state emission energies ranging
from 780 meV to 1100 meV. A monotonic increase of the g-factor from -2 to +1.2
is observed as the dot height decreases. The trend is well reproduced by sp3
tight binding calculations, which show that the hole g-factor is sensitive to
confinement effects through orbital angular momentum mixing between the
light-hole and heavy-hole valence bands. We demonstrate tunability of the
exciton g-factor by manipulating the quantum dot dimensions using pyramidal InP
nanotemplates
Geometric scaling of purely-elastic flow instabilities
We present a combined experimental, numerical and theoretical investigation
of the geometric scaling of the onset of a purely-elastic flow instability in a
serpentine channel. Good qualitative agreement is obtained between experiments,
using dilute solutions of flexible polymers in microfluidic devices, and
two-dimensional numerical simulations using the UCM model. The results are
confirmed by a simple theoretical analysis, based on the dimensionless
criterion proposed by Pakdel-McKinley for onset of a purely-elastic
instability
