Size-dependent fine-structure splitting in self-organized InAs/GaAs quantum dots
A systematic variation of the exciton fine-structure splitting with quantum
dot size in single InAs/GaAs quantum dots grown by metal-organic chemical vapor
deposition is observed. The splitting increases from -80 to as much as 520
eV with quantum dot size. A change of sign is reported for small quantum
dots. Model calculations within the framework of eight-band k.p theory and the
configuration interaction method were performed. Different sources for the
fine-structure splitting are discussed, and piezoelectricity is pinpointed as
the only effect reproducing the observed trend.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Quantum magnetism and topological ordering via enhanced Rydberg-dressing near F\"orster-resonances
We devise a cold-atom approach to realizing a broad range of bi-linear
quantum magnets. Our scheme is based on off-resonant single-photon excitation
of Rydberg -states (Rydberg-dressing), whose strong interactions are shown
to yield controllable XYZ-interactions between effective spins, represented by
different atomic ground states. The distinctive features of F\"orster-resonant
Rydberg atom interactions are exploited to enhance the effectiveness of
Rydberg-dressing and, thereby, yield large spin-interactions that greatly
exceed corresponding decoherence rates. We illustrate the concept on a spin-1
chain implemented with cold Rubidium atoms, and demonstrate that this permits
the dynamical preparation of topological magnetic phases. Generally, the
described approach provides a viable route to exploring quantum magnetism with
dynamically tuneable (an)isotropic interactions as well as variable space- and
spin-dimensions in cold-atom experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure
DNA loop statistics and torsional modulus
The modelling of DNA mechanics under external constraints is discussed. Two
analytical models are widely known, but disagree for instance on the value of
the torsional modulus. The origin of this embarassing situation is located in
the concept of writhe. This letter presents a unified model for DNA
establishing a relation between the different approaches. I show that the
writhe created by the loops of DNA is at the origin of the discrepancy. To take
this into account, I propose a new treatment of loop statistics based on
numerical simulations using the most general formula for the writhe, and on
analytic calculations with only one fit parameter. One can then compute the
value of the torsional modulus of DNA without the need of any cut-off.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure. Accepted by Europhysics Letter
Thin-disk laser pump schemes for large number of passes and moderate pump source quality
Novel thin-disk laser pump layouts are proposed yielding an increased number
of passes for a given pump module size and pump source quality. These novel
layouts result from a general scheme which bases on merging two simpler pump
optics arrangements. Some peculiar examples can be realized by adapting
standard commercially available pump optics simply by intro ducing an
additional mirror-pair. More pump passes yield better efficiency, opening the
way for usage of active materials with low absorption. In a standard multi-pass
pump design, scaling of the number of beam passes brings ab out an increase of
the overall size of the optical arrangement or an increase of the pump source
quality requirements. Such increases are minimized in our scheme, making them

Internal Friction of Amorphous Silicon in a Magnetic Field
The internal friction of e-beam amorphous silicon was measured in a magnetic
field between 0 and 6 T, from 1.5-20 K, and was found to be independent of the
field to better than 8%. It is concluded that the low energy excitations

Moths and Butterflies (Lepidoptera) of the Boreal Mixedwood Forest near Lac La Biche, Alberta, Including New Provincial Records
Lepidoptera were collected, primarily via UV light trap, for three seasons in the boreal mixedwood forest near Lac La Biche, Alberta. A total of 11,111 specimens were collected, representing 41 families and 438 species. A species list with flight times is presented. The total Lepidoptera community was estimated to be 546 ± 23.34 species. Abundance and species richness peaked in late July. Thirty-five species constitute new records for Alberta, while one species, Acanthopteroctetes bimaculata, is a new record for Canada, and the first record of the family Acanthopteroctetidae in Canada
Design guide for high pressure oxygen systems
A repository for critical and important detailed design data and information, hitherto unpublished, along with significant data on oxygen reactivity phenomena with metallic and nonmetallic materials in moderate to very high pressure environments is documented. This data and information provide a ready and easy to use reference for the guidance of designers of propulsion, power, and life support systems for use in space flight. The document is also applicable to designs for industrial and civilian uses of high pressure oxygen systems. The information presented herein are derived from data and design practices involving oxygen usage at pressures ranging from about 20 psia to 8000 psia equal with thermal conditions ranging from room temperatures up to 500 F
COMPTEL observations of the quasar PKS 0528+134 during the first 3.5 years of the CGRO mission
The COMPTEL observations of the blazar-type quasar PKS 0528+134 in the energy
range 0.75 MeV to 30 MeV carried out between April 1991 and September 1994 have
been analyzed. During the first two years PKS 0528+134 was most significantly
detected at energies above 3 MeV. During the last year there is only evidence
for the quasar at energies below 3 MeV indicating a spectral change. The
time-averaged COMPTEL energy spectrum between 0.75 MeV and 30 MeV is well
represented by a power-law shape. Spectra collected from different
observational periods reveal different power-law shapes: a hard state during
flaring observations reported by EGRET, and a soft state otherwise. The
combined simultaneous EGRET and COMPTEL spectra indicate these two spectral
states as well. During low intensisty gamma-ray phases no spectral break is
obvious from the combined COMPTEL and EGRET measurements. For the gamma-ray
flaring phases however, the combined COMPTEL and EGRET data require a spectral
bending at MeV-energies. By fitting broken power-law functions the best-fit
values for the break in photon index range between 0.6 and 1.7, and for the
break energy between ~5 MeV and ~20 MeV. Because the flux values measured by
COMPTEL below 3 MeV in both states are roughly equal, the observations would be
consistent with an additional spectral component showing up during gamma-ray
flaring phases of PKS 0528+134. Such a component could be introduced by e.g. a
high-energy electron-positron population with a low-energy cutoff in their bulk
Lorentz factor distribution. The multiwavelength spectrum of PKS 0528+134 for
gamma-ray flaring phases shows that the major energy release across the entire

Nonthermal Emission from the Arches Cluster (G0.121+0.017) and the Origin of -ray Emission from 3EG J1746-2851
High resolution VLA observations of the Arches cluster near the Galactic
center show evidence of continuum emission at 3.6, 6, 20 and 90cm. The
continuum emission at 90cm is particularly striking because thermal
sources generally become optically thick at longer wavelengths and fall off in
brightness whereas non-thermal sources increase in brightness. It is argued
that the radio emission from this unique source has compact and diffuse
components produced by thermal and nonthermal processes, respectively. Compact
sources within the cluster arise from stellar winds of mass-losing stars (Lang,
Goss & Rodriguez 2001a) whereas diffuse emission is likely to be due to
colliding wind shocks of the cluster flow generating relativistic particles due
to diffuse shock acceleration. We also discuss the possibility that
-ray emission from 3EG J1746--2851, located within 3.3 of the Arches
cluster, results from the inverse Compton scattering of the radiation field of
